It all get's lumped into that Brit Pop Manchester sound for me .. Step On is one of my most hated songs of all time and for some reason I find them really depressing.. I don't dance ..I didn't get that family gene for some reasonSaraM wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 8:52 am Absolutely agree re Elvis and Contino, except that I never find myself wanting to hear anything by Elvis.
Want to stick up for Pills n Thrills though; the comparison to Oasis is really unkind. Probably comes down to whether you can stick Shaun Ryder or not, but the music itself is great; danceable, summery, funky, textured, with some lovely understated guitar work. Nothing like Oasis's lumpen dirge imo.

I sometimes find myself needing to listen to I just Can't Help Believing, no idea why, it's comfortably his best but I don't think that's it. My aunt was an Elvis superfan, the only music in the house was Elvis, posters, plates, an Elvis teddy bear. Something must have stuck in the psyche

Not a fan of 'Madchester' in general, but there is some good music on that Mondays album. I can understand why you might find Ryder's schtick off putting though. It's crudely cynical and hedonistic lyrically, but I do find some of it laughably funny, in a Bon Scott kind of way.
I'm not a fan of 'dance' either, in the sense of the monotonous, electronically generated beats thing that somehow passes for music, but I do like dancing. It's not a skill, it's just a physical way of responding to music with rhythm.

Always found that weird. You get it with Cliff Richard too, with ladies of a certain generation.faaip wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 9:20 am I sometimes find myself needing to listen to I just Can't Help Believing, no idea why, it's comfortably his best but I don't think that's it. ‘Safe As Milk’ - hadn’t ever listened to before and after a couple of listens and 1/2 (can’t really get on with the Captn’s vocals at all)Muppet the Cat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 5:12 pm 81 Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - Safe As Milk
362 Penguin Cafe Orchestra- Music From The Penguin Cafe
752 Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
Ummmmm
‘Music From The Penguin Cafe’ - now I do own ‘Preludes, Airs and Yodels’ (largely bought on the back of liking Perpetuum Mobile), but rarely play these days. Didn’t rate MFTPC as much
‘Doggystyle’ - a pile of so a big fat
Those three didn’t exactly trouble the scorer

Safe As Milk is probably Beefheart's most accessible album so you personally can forget the rest of his catalogue.
