Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 28th September) - Manchester Utd plotting £60m Phillips capture

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 28th September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Manchester Utd plotting £60m Phillips capture

The Daily Star are reporting (so it must be true) that Manchester United have lost interest in West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, in favour of England teammate Kalvin Phillips. Bringing a top drawer defensive midfielder is high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's wish list, but they believe West Ham's valuation of 90m is too high, and have turned their attention across the Pennines! They estimate a fee between 50m - 60m would be sufficient to lure the 25yo to Old Trafford.

The Yorkshire Pirlo came close to leaving Elland Road in the Summer of 2019, in favour of Aston Villa. Only a timely intervention from Victor Orta, and wise words from his late grandmother, spared Leeds heartache. Later that Summer, Phillips signed a new and improved four year contract that expires in the Summer of 2024.

Having not strengthened sufficiently in the Summer, many questions have been raised about their lack of ambition. Whilst I'm sure all Leeds fans are grateful for what Radrizzzani has done for the club, Leeds cannot expect to keep their prized assets unless they can demonstrate that they are moving forward. Survival is not enough!

Leeds need five or six players in January

Former player, now pundit Frank McAvennie believes Leeds need to invest in five or six new players in the January transfer window if they want to continue with their intense playing style. The 61yo former West Ham and Scotland hitman accepts that whilst Bielsa will not change his playing style, the squad are going to be more susceptible to injury. According to McAvennie...

Leeds play with such a high tempo. It’s so intense, if you play like that, there will be injuries. They haven’t prepared for that. “They aren’t like Manchester City, they don’t have two different starting sides. There’s nothing Bielsa can do about that. He won’t change his style for anyone. They have to go out in January and buy five or six, I’m not joking. If they want to keep playing like that, with players flying into tackles, people will get injured.

Is big Frank right? We got away with it in our first season back in the top flight, but are starting to feel it now? Are Leeds missing out on points due to not changing their tactics?

Of course Macavenie is right, what a lot of us have said all along, stubborn Bielsa.
Crying out for quality additions and got an over-rated winger, pet project.
I hope KP won't even entertain going to OT but he will seriously consider his future, that then leaves others like Rapha & Mellier doubting where our ambitions are.
It could all unravel pretty quickly if we don't start picking up points sharpish.
Not only stubborn Bielsa but, the board, what are their ambitions, yes, they are making the right noises in the way of the stadium and training grounds etc, but, what about the present, the now !!
I keep saying, you simply cannot stand still in this league, the lesser clubs are more than able to take points off the so called top 4/6 so they've a damn good chance against us.

Sticking to what I said. Any bids coming in for Philips of raphinha over 50m and radzs will have a stroke. So if not in January then both will be gone in the summer.

If KP went to them lot then you could definitely say there’s something at the ‘ole homestead.

This is just tabloid headline grabbing bullish.it in it’s laziest form. No news around so create some.

What is not bullish.it however is that we have not invested properly in the squad. Is that down to the manager? Going on recent history I’d have to say yes.

Morning EB et all

All this "news" about Kalvin is like the Fuel Shortages made up by the Press because they haven't got any real news to report, just bloody lazy journalism.

Do I think Kalvin will be at Leeds next season possibly not if the right amount of money comes in and it will have to be north of £60m, will he go to the Scum ask yourself this would you? Kalvin is born and bred in Leeds (Farnley/Wortley) most of his family still live around there, he loves the city and he loves LUFC so if he goes it will be to Citeee, Pool or the likes of PSG my monies on Citeee.

Do we need 6 new players, well we definitely need 2 - Attacking Midfielder and a back up Centre Forward

Like others have said, this could be a sort of watershed season. If we don't finish higher than last I think Bielsa may see that as a failure on his part and decide to move on. Who knows what sort of exodus that would spark. One things for sure, they're would be no shortage of admirers for Kalvin and Rapha. Hopefully wed get a fair price

Should Kalvin & Raphinha leave LUFC in the next twelve months, at least we'll be financially secure & there'll be no excuses to invest properly.

Problem is, would we remain in the Premier League without our two main stars?

Come the end of this season I would think we need four positions to replenish. If we lost Phillips & Raphinha that figure would rise to six.

Kalvin will end up at Citeh or Liverpool if we have zero chance of offering KP European football.

A couple of months ago Phillips agent said he's happy at Leeds.

Now obviously fans can and have turned on the manager in the space of a few weeks praise for his loyalty has now become criticism for his stubbornness, but doubt Kalvin is that fickle.

Couldn't see us surviving without them. Almost never win a game without Kalvin and the difference in our performance Saturday was chalk and cheese when Raphinha was subbed

We've spent what £160m since promotion? Yet we have no midfield and are still relying on the same players from 5/6 years ago. Yet Orta shows pashun and cries, so his job is never under threat.

Cooper, Dallas, KP, Ayling, nearly half the first 11 were here before Orta as you say.

Klich was actually a target before Orta arrived hence why Monk went for him at Boro so cant even givehim credit for that.

He has had success with Raph, Mes, Bamford and Harrison i suppose but with what Harrison has cost us in fees and wages he wont be the bargain people think.

Apart from that? Is that all the true successes he has had in his years here? Ali of course

I think Orta gets a very easy ride given even now people question the strength of our squad and give Bielsa so much credit for performing miracles (this isnt only our fans its the media and opposition fans)

Then you have Rodrigo who seemingly cant find any form or aside from the odd game flatters to deceive and clearly isnt a natural in the system.

Koch who is never fit.

Llorente who is really good but is as injury prone as his reputation suggested.

Early days for Firpo and James so won'tbe to harsh on them however alarm bells are ringing already. James came with a reputation for being a hard working but limited speed merchant, very 1 dimensional, he hasnt shown anything so far to disprove that

Firpo came with a great athlete but very poor defender reputation, same as James very little to disprove that so far.

We got promoted so something must be right but individually for the money spent pur DOF gets a very easy ride imo.

For all our fans who go on about how consolidation is the aim etc etc 17th place is all we need.

In the summer when KP, Raph and Mes leave because they are disappointed at the club going backwards will you feel the same?

Its all very well saying we will aim for Europe in 3, 4 years but those players wont wait.

Players expect year on year progress, the second that stops with their new found fame and famous mates at other clubs higher up the pecking order then heads get turned and KP is no different.

But then good luck to them. Because saying Leeds should be mixing it with the top 4 or 5 is completely unrealistic and imposing a requirement that I don't think any club could meet. At the moment clubs like Arsenal, Spurs and Everton with far bigger budgets can't do it.

We saw a miracle. The problem is now fans demand a miracle or more.

I mean because Villa are s**t without Grealish so losing Phillips would mean league 2 football inside 5 years

Well said Cjay, can't disagree with any of that. There is no doubt we over performed last year and due to shilly shallying in the transfer window look like we are going to stagnate this year. Obviously early days yet and hope we are wrong but, as you say, I can see us losing those 3 players at the end of the season (if not before) unless the team can quickly improve their performances and results.

If we lose them and get a lot of money in return then some clever work in the transfer window will be needed. Not sure how that would go.

Villa clung on to 17th place, didnt lose their players and are now a very solid premiership unit.

Doing Ok without Grealish too methinks

I just can’t see us bringing in any kind of volume to the first team squad whilst Bielsa is here, he likes to improve players and believes in the squad he has so it needs to be a special type of player to get his attention.

We haven’t been shy with investment but it’s just not been targeted enough at the right areas instead buying multiple players for central defence and wingers. In two transfer windows We went for centre midfielders, so it’s acknowledged we need one yet missed cuicance ( probably for the best) and Conor Gallagher and for some reason didn’t bother with anyone else and signed a winger instead in both cases - had we got Gallagher I am confident we would defo have 3 even 6 more points on the board - Orta needs to be working with Bielsa now to find someone for January, we have a PL Loan spot available usually some decent fringe players available in jan from the top teams.
