Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 20th November) Spurs may use Rodon as bargaining chip for unlikely candidate

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 20th November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Spurs may use Rodon as bargaining chip for unlikely candidate

Tottenham Hotspur may use Joe Rodon as a bargaining chip, in their pursuit of an unlikely Leeds Utd candidate.

A recent series of injuries for the North London outfit has made Ange Postecoglou reevaluate his squad, and has now fixed his sights on wantaway winger Wilfred Gnonto, in what has been suggested as a straight swap deal. The talented 20yo has endured a fractious relationship with Leeds Manager Daniel Farke since taking the reigns early June. Gnonto had set his sights on a move to Everton, and went on strike to try and force the transfer.

In the end, Gnonto came to his senses, and normal service was resumed, but not before getting on the wrong side of the Elland Road faithful. Unfortunately, his performances have been found lacking this season, and after breaking his ankle in early September (at Hull), has been unable to force his way back into the starting line-up.

Now, a fresh hamstring injury, picked up whilst on International duty with the Italian U21 squad threatens to hamper any plans he had to work his way back into the first team line-up. Leeds have a good working relationship with Tottenham Hotspur; not only this season, which has seen Joe Rodon and Djed Spence arrive on season long loans.

The Elland Road pitch actually came from Spurs! Back in 2021, Leeds shelled out £300,000 for grass from their North London dealer. Days later, Leeds performed a well needed pitch transplant, which is still in place today!

Is Rodon worth £20m

Whilst news of a swap deal involving Joe Rodon and Wilfred Gnonto makes sense, many have doubts whether the Welsh International is worth £20m.

Rodon, 26, joined Spurs from Swansea in 2020 for £11m, and has made just fifteen appearances for them. After failing to impress, he joined French outfit Rennes on a season long loan during their 22/23 campaign with an option to buy. He only made a total of 15 appearances, before losing his slot to an 18yo Academy player.

Whilst his transformation under Farke has been recognised by Spurs, he is still one of the first players they would like like to see out of the door, but believe they can double their money, even though he only has 18months left on his contract!

Similarly, why aren't Leeds talking about doubling their money on the likes of Wober, Roca and Harrison who continue to impress for their loan clubs! Whilst Harrison may have cost only £11m, Leeds shelled out £9m in loan fees over three seasons. Unfortunately, Leeds failed to persuade Everton to pay a loan fee for the Birthday boy, when he joined in August.

Everton set to appeal 10 point deduction

Everton are set to appeal their ten point deduction for their blatant disregard to financial fair play rules.

The Premier League took action against the Toffee's last month during a five day hearing after the Merseyside club posted losses of over £272m over a three year period. Whilst fans of other clubs are astonished at the leniency of the punishment, Everton believe the punishment is harsh, and intend to appeal the sanction.

The Club has already communicated its intention to appeal the decision to the Premier League. The appeal process will now commence and the Club’s case will be heard by an Appeal Board appointed pursuant to the Premier League’s rules in due course.

Everton maintains that it has been open and transparent in the information it has provided to the Premier League and that it has always respected the integrity of the process. The Club does not recognise the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith and it does not understand this to have been an allegation made by the Premier League during the course of proceedings.

Both the harshness and severity of the sanction imposed by the Commission are neither a fair nor a reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted. The Club will also monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. "Everton cannot comment on this matter any further until the appeal process has concluded.

Morning all.
Rodon and spence plus 10 million and get rid of that trouble causing little s**t for good.
No point going over the other loan deal again,we won't achieve anything now.

I've no doubt we tried to negotiate loan fees where possible, but would only convince the stupid that didn't know how desperate we were to offload them to pay anything in relation to a 'fee'

I do want Rodon to come here, but i've no idea of his true worth whilst playing in the Championship, a player of similar ilk shouldn't be too hard to find for a good scout.
DF is the one who's working with him and should know himself how much he wants him and how much to pay.

I'd try and keep Willy under wraps now even if fit, and still only use him if and when absolutely necessary, preferably from the bench, where he can try his little heart out to get into the shop window.

Throw in Spence, and there's some bargaining to be done for DF, bargaining and deals where you can find out what your manager's made of, also find out what his relationship is like with our owners, and what our money situation is like going forward, along with their plans.

Rodon is essentially worth what we are willing to pay.

Levy always plays hard ball in the transfer market. Would a straight swap of Gnonto for Rodon represent value for money - that is down to DF. The problem we would have is the value attached to that deal is key. We would in principle have to pay Gnonto’s former club a percentage ( which is believed to be anywhere in the 40% - 60% range )

We need to get the best deal on Gnonto - therefore whatever the vagaries I believe this suggested swap deal does not represent the best financial outcome for us.
In principle a lower value on both players would in principle reduce our liability to his former club, but such a deal would be heavily scrutinised by UEFA.

My view is to wait until the summer, and reassess the market and valuations.

Personally my view is that Gnonto is a far more valuable player asset to us than Rodon is to Spurs.

For a player most forumites deem not good enough for the Championship there aren't half some quality teams "apparently" looking to get him.

Agreed, with bells on. And to be honest don't think there is an issue between the club and Gnonto, I'm not sure there are any players in the championship that would oust James or Summerville out of our starting 11 atm. Gnonto not being able to "force his way back in the starting 11" is a good thing for Leeds and really not his issue or problem.

Sometimes people go out of their way to find faults that aren't actually there. Maybe this Gnonto talk about him being upset again and wanting away again is just that.

But Rodon and Spence would be more use to us as starters than Gnonto on the bench, no?

I deem him good enough, although he isn’t a starter yet, it’s his attitude that gets my goat.

We have Rodon and Spence ...We have them to seasons end. What if we lose Cry to injury? What if James, always a streaky player, loses form?

Also E&B's initial post makes no reference to getting both Rodon and Spence for Gnonto

I saw a player dancing on the pitch with team mates not long ago. I don't think there is an attitude problem. He wouldn't get near the first team squad if there were. Farke wouldn't allow it. Let alone get game time off the bench

I know as a teen I made bad decisions all the time and tbh the early season stuff seems to have been agent led... He was also very happy in Switzerland...

Fans have read way too much into that and don't seem to be very forgiving.

I think Gnonto has just reminded us that his potential (and potential worth) is huge. The most striking moment in the 7-0 win was him forcing the ball over the line for one of his two goals. That was the passion, energy, and determination that we saw last season.

So the big question is - Where has that gone? If his head has been turned, then he will have to leave. The two Spurs players + some cash sounds about right.

If there is a more hopeful possible scenario then I think it would be this: He has been carrying niggling injuries for months now , and he has just, finally shrugged them off. If that is the case, please can we now see the electrifying Gnonto (off the bench), and then see where we are in January.

It’s all very well dancing wh n we score, he was the one wanting away, he was the one that went on strike, age has nothing to do with that, it’s an attitude issue, I still think he wants away, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t his agent his father as well !
Offering him to Everton is another bad decision imho, he’s better than them, I only want players at Leeds who want to be here, I don’t see that in gnonto, time will tell.
No one is bigger than the club, no one, if he stays and knuckles down I’ll be the first to praise him like I do James.

No you don't dance if we score like that if you're malcontent, Farke doesn't play him as a sub if he's a bad tempered trouble maker and he has played well as sub... No clue if his father is his agent but the father is as likely to offer bad advice as any agent. That makes no difference other than he probably has more sway..

Maybe Farke is just keeping him in the shop window !
I still think he’s trouble, if it all turns out swell, I’ll be the first to heap praise on him.

Do you think that's Farke's way? I don't to be honest.... I hope not, it's no way to run a football club.
