Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 14th October) Kouyate - medical passed and training with Leeds

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 14th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Kouyate - medical passed and training with Leeds

Cheikhou Kouyate has been spotted around Thorp Arch for the last several day, amidst rumour that the soon to be 35yo has passed his Leeds medical! Kouyate has been without a club since being released by Nottingham Forest during the Summer, and has spent the last few days trying to prove his fitness. His age may be a concern, but with it, comes a wealth of experience stretching back seventeen years, and almost five hundred appearances.

Former Leeds and England midfielder Carlton Palmer has edged on the side of caution, insisting Daniel Farke should wait until January to add to his squad, but with long term injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilea Gruev, does the gaffer have much choice? It has also been suggested that Leeds are considering recalling Darko Gyabi from his loan spell with Plymouth Argyle. The 20yo has made eight league starts from the Pilgrims this season, and has a healthy 6.54 'whoscored' rating, ranking him ninth in Wayne Rooney's squad. According to Palmer:-

He [Kouyate] is still without a club, and it worries me when a player has been released from a football club in the summer and has not been picked up, it is a problem,” “It might work out in a limited period, but Daniel Farke and I both have the same feelings about this, and he expressed his reservations about Leeds signing free agents at this stage of the season.

I think what Leeds have got to go is trying to get through this present moment, hopefully, get one or two players back or get to the January transfer window and move to bring some quality players in. I don’t think Kouyate is going to come in at 34 years old and make a big impression at Leeds…

What are the chances of seeing Klopp passing on advice to Farke up at Thorp Arch anytime soon

Former Leeds and England striker Robbie Fowler has created quite a stir on social media with a piece he wrote in the Sunday Mirror yesterday! The former Liverpool, Leeds and England star lit up twitter after inferring that he wouldn't be surprised to see Jurgen Klopp rock up at Thorp Arch, as part of his new role as Head of Global Football with Red Bull.

Although the Austrian energy drink company only hold a minority stake in Leeds Utd (suggested to be in the region of 10%), it is believed that they could play a massive role moving forward, including revamping their training facilities at Thorp Arch and improve their scouting system. Although Jurgen Klopp and Daniel Farke's paths have rarely crossed, the former Liverpool Manager once named Farke as the person he would like to be stuck on a desert island with, describing him as a 'good guy'.

Didn't think players were recallable if they were getting game time...

We do need a DMF/CB hybrid, beggars can't be choosers so hopefully this can work out with Kouyate

I think they're talking about January for the Gyabi recall. Terms vary. It depends what was written in the contract. It could be written that he can't be recalled until the end of the window or that he can be recalled in the next transfer window.

A short term emergency signing. It seems ideal for the position we're in. Reports this week have been that Gruev probably won't play again this season.

Goalkeeper

1 - Ilan Meslier - 2026
2 - Karl Darlow - 2026

Right Wing Back

3 - Jaden Bogle - 2028
4 - Sam Byram - 2025

Left Wing Back

5 - Junior Firpo - 2025
6 - Isaac Schmidt

Centre Back

6 - Pascal Struijk - 2027 -
7 - Joe Rodon - 2028
8 - Max Wober - 2028

Defensive Midfield

9 - Ethan Ampadu - 2027
10 - Ilia Gruev - 2027

Centre Midfield

11 - Ao Tanaka - 2028
12 - Joe Rothwell - 2025

Attacking mid

14 - Brendon Aaronson - 2026
15 - Joe Gelhardt - 2027

Central Forwards

16 - Mateo Joseph Fernandez - 2025
17 - Joel Piroe - 2027
18 - Patrick Bamford - 2026

Wing

13 -Manor Solomon - 2025
19 - Largie Ramazani - 2027?
20 - Dan James - 2026
21 - Willy Gnonto - 2027

17 fit plyers in the first team squad, James and Solomon hopefully back for SU which will give us options off the bench. Bamford is an injury waiting to happen though so basically half a player

Zero cover at CB til the new year (likely imo) is very worrying. One assumes Byram or Schmidt would slot in there should the unthinkable happen. And we used to complain when Ayling played CB, at least he could

Yes but it wasn't his west position.

Our bench options are a GK, 2 wing backs, 2 forwards and whatever Gelhardt is ... tbh I'm not sure, AMF, forward, winger?

I think what I heard was from the Bulgarian manager. He may have said 5 months. But the assumption was that he probably wouldn't reach match fitness before the end of the season.

Bad miniscus injuries are nasty, American Footballer does that game one then he's done for the season hoping he can get back for game one the following season. Think JJ McCarthy did his in preseason and will now be hoping to be fit for training camps in April/May I guess. Around 8 months

BTW, nasty double broken leg for Detroit's Aiden Hutchinson at the weekend .. he'll be missed

Also we don't know about Ampedu yet as the decision was taken to try rest and rehab which was the route taken by Struijk last season who eventually had to have surgery. Hopefully it works out better for Ethan but it's by no means certain he'll play again this season.

Time to give Charlie Crew a serious go?

Farke is by no means an idiot so will have a plan.
