Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 8th November) Joffy eyes loan move

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 8th November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Joffy eyes loan move

Joe Gelhardt is keen to leave Elland Road on loan in January, with West Brom already leading the race for his temporary signature. Joffy 22 has fallen way down the pecking order over the past couple of seasons after a promising start to his Elland Road career. Lack of game time has severely hampered his progress, and now finds himself fourth choice behind Piroe, Joseph and Bamford.

The amount of talent that slips the net is shameful. We're not expecting every fledgling talent to become an Archie Gray, but at-least give them that opportunity; if not at Elland Road, then elsewhere, on loan.

He had somewhat of a successful spell with Sunderland towards the second half of their 22/23 campaign, even though he got asked to play out of position after an injury to Ross Stewart. Despite a lengthy injury list, the likes of Joffy, Debayo and Crew are rotting on the bench, with a rare cameo appearance here and there, as apposed to playing every week in the lower leagues.

Guilavogui pulled out all the stops to win a new contract

Whilst the majority of footballers spent a relaxing Summer living it up in exclusive sun drenched resorts, Leeds new boy Joshua Guilavogui was enrolling on a rigorous training and fitness program in Dubai, hoping his hard work and dedication would be enough to win him a new footballing contract.

The versatile 34yo won over the trust and confidence of Daniel Farke and coaches during a week long trial last month, after long term injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev left the Whites midfield short of numbers. He has already gained more league minutes than Joffy, Crew and Schmidt. According to renowned elite training and fitness coach Nicolas St Maurice...

They all have different starting points. Josuha, when he started working with us, he had been working in the gym and doing running by himself. But he’d done less time on the pitch because, by yourself, it’s more complicated. Depending on what they need and the stage they are at with their fitness, some guys will come to us and go out on the pitch three or four times a week. Some will do less but more in the gym if they are coming back from injury and they might do treatment with our guys, too. The pitch sessions are becoming more popular because it’s more fun to train with other players.

It’s more competitive and better for everybody. We keep the groups small in general, between four and six players. On this occasion, we had all first-division players looking for new teams working together, all from different countries. It’s more fun for them to work together and because of the friendly competition, when they’re doing sprints or drills, they push a bit harder each time. When they’re doing the aerobic and cardio work, they get better results.”

He is a serious professional player. He was already at a good fitness level. He’s tall, when you look at his body type — similar to when I worked with Antonio Rudiger at Real Madrid — when you look at them, you don’t know how strong they actually are. But when they’re pushing people around and moving weights in the gym, you realise how strong they are.

I was surprised, we do sprints at the start of each workout to get everything fired up and he was winning the races. He was against seven other top players including some who are in season and playing games who were training with us during the international break and Josuha was beating them. I was impressed that he was right up there after a few months just training by himself.

The cost of ball retention

Unsurprisingly ball retention rates pretty highly on the demands Leeds gaffer Daniel Farke puts on puts on his players, but at what cost? I'm sure we'd all agree that punting the ball 50 yards up the pitch is not the way to go, but surely, neither is continual sideways or back passing. Millwall showcased what a long hopeful ball from the half-line semi circle can do - it may be ugly, but it's effective.

Even as the minutes ticked down on Wednesday evening, Leeds refused to deviate from plan A! Why is this? It's not as if Leeds are deadly at ball retention in the final third. In-fact, Leeds have been dispossessed 157 times this season so far in the final third, more than any other Championship side (though its fair to say that it doesn't take into account the unprecedented amount of times they have attacked in this area).

This prompts the question, why don't Leeds have a plan B, and more importantly, can they win promotion without it?

The problem with Joffy was that sadly there were too many Joffies over that time frame.

Us stepping up to the PL was probably not good timing for him and then when Bielsa left Marsch wasnt teaching him anything good and finally that whole generation youngsters were ignored by following managers.

Even his loan to Sunderland was badly timed when he was then expected to play as a 9...

If I recall we were in the exacts same spot as this in 2019 and the screams were for bloody plan B

Our best hope is that they follow the example of the GREAT ONE and do plan A better.

The way Man City play is like a sculptor chipping away at a chunk of marble, and that is who Leeds try to emulate. Grealish and Gnonto out on the wing continually making backpasses... it is a real snooze fest... chip chip chipping away.

As the Boss said 97 channels and nothing on... more like 197 passes and nothing on.
Our team is trying their utmost to bore the other team to death, and when rigor Mortis sets in, they might have an opportunity to score a goal.

Bielsa said that football should be entertainment, something to get the fans excited, but instead it's tippy tappy around a 10 man low block, and to imagine fans pay good money to watch this. They might as well be watching Bobby Fisher spend 90 minutes thinking about his next chess move.

Give me a game of basketball football any day... some blood guts and thunder... some excitement to wake me up from sleep inducing anti-football. A Pablo rampage.

Dispossessed 157 times in the final third - you can imagine the lengths the team went through in each build up!!!!!

Such a promising player that has lost his way, you don't become a bad player overnight and Joffy needs a new club that can give him that boost to tap into his true potential. I don't think W.B.A is the answer but as long as Joffy gets his chance in his favoured position. Good luck to the guy, hope he does well

I feel the same. I really want to see Joffy succeed.

There was excitement when we first signed him. And it was the time of Covid when all the youth games were televised on YouTube. Joffy, Greenwood, Drameh, Cresswell all looked really good (Summerville came through a bit later). Then he graduated and started making positive impacts to games late on - one of the key figures in avoiding relegation. When Bamford was injured the next season, it was time for Joffy to make his mark, but he never established himself. I think the loan to Sunderland went OK. Not great, but OK. And I really was expecting this to be his level last season when we got relegated. Really, it should have been.

But gathering cobwebs on the bench and not even being released to play for the 21's has not helped him at all. I keep hoping there's a future player in there and even if it's not at Leeds, I wish him well.

As far as possession football goes, we're the best team in the league with the best players. We're better than everyone else and that should be the best approach for us. It doesn't make sense to be hoofing long balls then gambling on winning it back further down the field. The latter approach is actually to our disadvantage as lesser teams will beat us at it - the make up for lack of talent with physicality. To be successful we have to trust playing proper football. It's what makes us better than the rest.

But I do understand the need for surprise. We saw it a lot more when AMpadu was in midfield. He could pick a long pass out of nothing. We have other players capable of doing that - Strujik especially. But they don't seem to have the bravery and gut instinct to do it like Ampadu did.

The approach play is fine, it's the finishing and set pieces that continually let us down.
You'd think, well I would anyway, that the manager and backroom staff would think a little more as to why it keeps on happening, they get paid to sort it out.

I think the key difference is a long pass and a long hoof.

We obviously aren't a team able to do the hoof.

But our hesitation to switch the play when the opportunity arises is baffling to me (as is our reluctance to cross the ball).

Can only assume Farke doesn't like the risk because its happened in both of his seasons so can't be a coincidence.

Last season we were last for switches of play and 18th for crosses into the box, this season its last for switches and 13th for crosses.

It's lower when you consider how much of the ball we have we must have the lowest cross to possession ratio in the league.

I think which I've said before that elements of this style make it harder for our players not easier.

And the complete reluctance to use switches if play is one, we move the ball so slowly that by the time it gets from one side to the other the winger is marked.

It's strange that we have had wingers like Summerville, like James, like Gnonto who would love nothing more than a quick switch occasionally to get 1v1 with a full back but we almost never do it.

It's a weapon that seems so obvious when you consider our strength has always been our wingers but one the manager clearly doesn't want to use.

I don't think any of us expect DF to start playing Dyche Ball but a distinction between a long pass and hoof Is key and the long pass option (be it over the top or switches) is one he should have made far more use of imo.

I have plenty of sympathy for Joffy. Showed so much potential and his work rate is fantastic. His lack of fruition has partly been down to circumstance and managers not giving him a chance or prolonged run (as he should have got under Jesse Marsch).

But so many times when he might be useful to us, he's injured. He's missed the bench the last 3 games - 2 of those Sam Chambers mad so he would have got his chance
