Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 12th November) - The jury is still out on Solomon

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 12th November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

The jury is still out on Solomon

It's early days, but things aren't quite worked out the way they were planned for Spurs loanee Manor Solomon. The 25 year old joined the Whites several days before the end of the Summer transfer window, agreeing to pay his £60,000 per week wages, and a one off transfer fee of £1m. Bringing him to Elland Road was always going to be a gamble. He spent much of last season on the side-lines with a serious knee injury, only managing 280 minutes of game time.

After lagging behind in pre-season it was decided to send the Israeli International out on loan. Having just missed out on Rak-Sakyi, and time running out, former Technical Director Gretar Steinsson was keen not to miss out on another top target, and secured the deal. 383 minutes of game time later, the jury's still out. He showed enough during his debut against Hull that when on song he's a game changer, but a nagging injury, and perhaps lack of first team football have hampered his progress this season.

YEP reporter Graham Smyth believes Solomon has the quality to be a game changer, but it's not quite happening for him yet...

The frustration is so evident in his body language at times. It just isn't happening at present. He's trying too hard or he's trying things that don't quite fit with what his team-mates are doing. He has the quality to be a difference maker at this level but it's not evident right now.

Recruitment reshuffle at ER

Alex Davies has been promoted to Head of Recruitment at Elland Road following the departure of Jordan Miles after just nine months and overseeing one transfer window. Miles only joined the Whites from Aberdeen in February, having held similar roles with West Ham and Ipswich, after a successful Internship with Derby County back in 2010. His departure follows that of Technical Director Gretar Steinsson, who has taken up a new role with the 49ers, not related to the club.

Davies has been part of the Leeds Utd set up since 2011, starting as a Performance Analyst before being promoted to head up the analysis department. Under Victor Orta, he was moved into scouting/recruitment and was appointed Head of Recruitment Operations in February this year, working closely with Miles.

Influential consultant Adam Underwood continues as Head of Football Operations and Hannah Cox as Head of Football Administration. For a club the size of Leeds Utd, their recruitment hasn't been great. Perhaps minority partner Red Bull, known to have one of the best scouting networks in Europe are to be involved behind the scenes at Elland Road, but in what capacity?

Morning all.
I would agree about soloman, needs to step it up a bit, has the skill set, just not enough thought in the process.

If RB do actually have "one of the best scouting networks in Europe" they need to step up as well and qiuckly, getting promotion with this squad is one thing, trying in vain to stay up is another all together, speculate to accumulate says I.

"Folks, let me tell you, we’re going to make scouting great again—better than ever before. Leeds United, believe me, they’re an amazing team, huge potential, just like America. We want to find the very best players, the Tom Bradys, the superstars of England, to bring them to Leeds. You gotta be out there, you gotta look for the big guys, fast guys, good christian guys, guys who can throw the ball like nobody’s business.

This isn’t just football, this is our football! And I’m talking touchdowns, big plays, big wins, no more draws, none of that soft stuff... bone crunching tackles... well make it like 15 men in the octagon, mixed martial arts meets football... gonna be a winner, believe me, OK?

We’re talking about going out there and scoring for Leeds United. Because winning, folks, winning is what we do. Just like in 2016 and now 2034, nobody thought it was possible, but we pulled it off—total victory. And we’re going to do it again here.

Now, I’m not saying it’s going to be easy. Scouting is hard work, you gotta get out on the field, see who’s running up the court, see who’s kicking those field goals, the whole nine yards. I know you all know what to look for because America has the best scouts in the world. And I’m bringing that winning mentality to Leeds.

We’re gonna find the absolute best, believe me, the future quarterbacks for Leeds United. And when we bring them to the pitch, the pitch, that’s what they call it over there, not many people know that... it’s going to be huge. We’re gonna shock the world. Leeds is going to be number one, folks... and they’re going to love us for it."

I would dispute the glib, facile comment in relation to recruitment . Ampadu, Rodon , Bogle , Gruev , Ramazani, Tanaka, Piroe and Rothwell are all good players for the job in hand and more than half of them are outstanding and probably capable of doing a job in the Premiership . If the criticism is that there are other players who you would wish to have been brought in then that would have to be assessed on the basis of the constraints under which the recruitment team are working . As for the constant campaign around Solomon I for one have no doubt that if he gets the minutes on the pitch he will prove to be an outstanding signing and will be instrumental in pushing this squad up the gears .

The quoted players are good (on their day).

It's not like we're doing a Leicester, even though the standard this season is so much poorer than last!

Agree with Rutter

Solomon will get there. He hasn’t played for a year before coming to us. He will get there probably when we need the push most (jan to March). Then we will be clambering to sign him and spurs have us over a barrel.

Emerging Question…why didn’t we get £1m loan fee for Harrison. That’s really poor negotiation.

Not sure about Solomon, I'd assume Ramazani comes in when fit which would push Solomon to a few minutes off the bench. We're really missing Ramazani. Solomon could also easily get injured again

Harrison had a Loan Clause in his contract triggered by relegation . No scope to negotiate a loan fee . Leicester had been the best part of a decade in the Premiership and had won a couple of trophies and played pretty regularly in Europe which gave them a much more solid base to their squad and to their entire club set up . Compared to Southampton and Leeds they were very much not in the relegation contenders basket that season and it was a bit of an aberration ( partly due to the World Cup interruption ) that they went down so they were always best placed to bounce back . People tend to forget that for the weeks around relegation / takeover completion there was a real sense of panic and a feel of the post Ridsdale implosion at Leeds . It was the combination of the 49ers ,DF and the recruitment team that steadied the ship and once the early season blip was over the quality of the squad came through . The difference this season will be that when the really good run comes ( as it will ) we're in a position to pull clear of the rest rather than burning up that fuel trying to catch the front two.

Careful there you almost said something positive about team.

We can't be having that can we? :flog: :flog:

The question should be 'why did we fork out £9m on loans fee's for Harrison over three seasons, yet did not receive a loan fee for Harrison(2 seasons now) (and most of the rest of the deserters) including Wober and Arronson).

Simply put, it wasn't in their contracts, set out by Radrizzani, Orta and the 49ers....

Everything is relative, and given the money spent, talent on view, and depth of Championship talent - we should be doing a lot better, and putting on a better show for the fans.

Ell, I think of you as the MOT equivalent of Wikipedia - covering the same ground as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but just a little bit naughty. :)

If you want that outcome go play football manager.

Here on earth things happen a bit differently.

If the voice of reason includes continual dissing of the team you claim to support I wonder what your motives really are.

Happy with Solomon so far. Any time we have 3 of our 4 wingers fit, I'll be happy

Happy with the recruitment team. Steinsson moved to the 49ers so there's no doubt he will still be involved with Leeds. I don't think he's going there to advise them on American football or equity funds.
