Leeds Utd v Sheffield Wednesday
Sunday 18th January 12:00pm | Elland Road

Leeds United will be desperate to rediscover their winning touch when Sheffield Wednesday visit Elland Road this Sunday lunchtime. After a blistering run of form prior to Christmas, consecutive league draws against Blackburn and Hull have slightly dampened the mood among the Elland Road faithful.

The Whites' comfortable lead at the top of the Championship has dwindled to a slender single point, injecting extra pressure into this Yorkshire derby. Leeds could potentially find themselves outside the automatic promotion places for the first time in over a month if Burnley beat Sunderland on Friday evening, and likewise, Sheffield United pick up maximum points against Norwich City.

The recent form guide suggests a tight contest. Over the past six games, Leeds sit just above their rivals in third, with 12 points, while the Wendies are a close fourth, trailing by a single point. However, despite similar figures, defensive frailties continue to plague Danny Röhl's side. They've conceded 40 goals so far this season, putting them among the Championship's leakiest defences.

Leeds will be boosted by the return of Ilia Gruev and Junior Firpo, both of whom are back in training and edging closer to full fitness. Their availability will provide valuable depth, especially with Pascal Struijk now sidelined. The Dutch defender has suffered a hamstring issue and will be out for at least three weeks, though Farke admitted there is a small chance the injury could be more severe if the tendon is involved, which could extend his absence to three months. The news came as an unwelcome surprise after Struijk had trained earlier in the week, only for a scan to reveal the extent of the problem. Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford remains on the treatment table with a hamstring injury and is expected to be out for another three weeks.

Farke acknowledged Struijk’s importance to the team, noting that Leeds tend to score more goals when he is on the pitch. While the January transfer window remains a difficult market to operate in, he suggested the club would remain vigilant in case they needed to react to any major injury concerns. The absence of Struijk, combined with Charlie Crew’s loan move to Doncaster and Joe Gelhardt’s temporary exit in search of regular game time, has slightly altered the squad dynamics. However, Farke remains satisfied with his current group and is pleased to have Max Wöber back in training, though his workload must be carefully managed.

Turning attention to Sheffield Wednesday, Farke praised their recent improvement, warning that they are a side playing with intensity and togetherness. He stressed that Leeds must be at their best to secure three points against a team capable of causing problems. While he refused to comment on the situation regarding Wednesday’s ownership, he confirmed ongoing discussions with Leeds’ hierarchy about transfers, emphasizing that he and the club’s decision-makers are aligned on their long-term ambitions. As the Whites continue their push for promotion, Farke made it clear that while no players have requested to leave, the club will remain alert to any opportunities that may arise before the window closes.

Farke on Piroe

It was beneifical to have a few days for it to settle down. Some progress with his rehab. He is back fully fit with no problem at all.

One bad news is Pascal Struijk a little awareness in his hamstring. He is out for three weeks. There is a small chance the tenden on the msucle is invovled.

Right now we assess it. If th tendon is invovled.... it could be three months. For the upcoming games he won't be available.

He was able to train on Wednesday. We sent for a scan and it was anegative surprise for all of us. Definitely out for the next three weeks.

Plans for replacement

He is out vice captain and rock. We always score more goals when he is on the pitch. He is a very important payer for us. A bit of a concern for myself.

We will stay awake until the end of the window. If there is a big injury to one of our key players, we may be forced to react. We need to asses Pascal's injury. If it's just three weeks then we might not need to.

(React ffs all this react crap, be proactive for a change)

Transfer plans

With Charlie Crew it makes sense for him to go out on loan [to Doncaster], to find his rhythm.

For Joffy, he is struggling for game time for months. His behaviour was always professional. It valuable for us for him to have game time.

He find to find a soltution to find more game time. Because his behaviour was always professional, we allowed him to go out on loan. Overall, I'm very happy with my squad.

January is always more complicated than the summer. We have to stay away. I'm happy Max Wober is back but we have to manage his load. He is training more regularly.

We will not fall asleep if there is a solution.

Other clubs activity

That is for other clubs. To improve the best team in the league is always more difficult but I will never rule out business for us. If a player can imrpove the squad then why not. And to be affordable (only top because of Blunts points deduction Daniel not on pitch performance)

Sheff Wed

They have improved. They have a chance to push for the top six, a team that always plays with intensity. They have a good togetherness.

They are a good group and we are aware they are a threat. We have to be at our best again.

On Sheff Wed owner

I won;t comment on that situation.

We have daily conversations [ with owners about transfers]. Angus too.

Our conversations are on a top level. We are on the same page and the same direction. We know whre we want to be ana achieve in the end.

We are pretty tight together and on a good path and want to be successful. I can't have any complaints.

No. 10 position

we have a few options there. Piroe can play there. We will stay awake to [transfer opprtunities].

I wouldn't over intreprate his [Solomon's] role against Harrogate. It was good to see him there, Willy Gnonto was also there a couple of times.

Transfer approaches

No-one was in my office apart from Joffy when he mentioned he wants a move. Nobody has asked my to leave.

We haven't had to reject any offer. No-one wants to lave, we don;t even have to speak about it as it's a waste of time. I don't have that feeling at all.

Struijk gets negative scans but is still out 3 weeks?

Keeping him fit for a sale?

Plus Wednesday have lost Shea Charles who was called back to Southampton from his loan spell. He was playing really well for them lately, so thats another change they have to deal with.

Amazing how often Farke mentioned "SLEEP" in his interview, and being awake to possibilities.

If anybody uses a word too often in a interview my newspeak antenna is alerted... and I get the impression that in this case he is caught in the throes of somnambulism.

And if anybody gets cited for professionalism, it means they are up for the chop... just like Joffy.
