Manager and awards chat

Post by Cjay »

*Diclaimer- It is a joke, a bit of cheeky banter, please read the op before lynching me*

Good, now I've grabbed your attention :)

A discussion with Leon and him telling me to make a thread about the subject has encouraged this.

And I find him scary.

Not really sure how to word this. . . . .

For the Manager of the Season awards does it need a manager winning something for it to be deserved?

For example if last season had ended slightly differently in the Championship.

Hypothetically us and Ipswich swapped places, or Ipswich and Southampton and Ipswich had failed to go up and finished 3rd or 4th and lost in the playoffs.

Would that have made Kieran Mckenna an unworthy winner of the Manager of the Season award? Despite the fact he got a newly promoted team into the playoffs in his first season.

So Enzl Maresca as the league winner who had one of the biggest budgets and was expected to get promoted would have been the worthy winner? In that scenario

Or if Marti Cifuentes gets QPR into the playoffs this season, if they lost would he still not be a worthy winner of the award over someone like Parker or Wilder or Farke if they get promoted?

Or if in the Premier League Man City recover and win it this season does Pep deserve the award over someone like Nuno getting Nottingham Forest top 4 or Iraola getting Bournemouth top 6 and a Cup Final for example?

Things tend to be won by the richest clubs with the biggest budgets in every league.

So obviously some managers have a massive advantage over others in the same league.

Is a manager doing much better than they should with what they have enough to deserve a Manager of the Season award? Or do they actually need something to show for it? A trophy of some sort?

Re: Bielsa, Farke, just a bit useless?

This will cause trouble 🤣
It is an interesting subject in fairness. I would say in their respective divisions Farke & Pep have earnt the right to have the “better” squads. I mean from the previous success in their careers. They didn’t just land in a job with no prior success, after-all thats why we employed Farke.
But ultimately winning is everything so no I dont give a toss if someone does something above what can be reasonably expected but still fails. And it’s arguable that with the added pressure Farke is under getting us promoted is worthy of an accolade.
But Bielsa is different league. That much is certain.

It will grab attention

And I want answers.

I think it's actually a pretty decent subject to discuss.

Doesn't have to be Farke he just fits the scenarios , I'd genuinely like it to just be an honest footie chat :)

So you think it does? You think the trophy winner deserves the award?

Be that Parker and Wilder this season for example over someone like Danny Rohl getting Wendies into the playoffs and losing?

You grabbed mine. Bielsa & useless in the same sentence 🤣 you’ll get lynched.
Winning is everything in sport especially football. The plucky loser. Nah. Not for me. Also the expectancy on Rohl is completely different to managing a relatively expensive squad at Leeds Utd.
I agree its an interesting subject. But it will obviously cause a few disagreements 🤣
As I say winning and /or promotion is god. If Farke achieves it then in the Dog household he will get my award thats for sure.
Of course it will be a huge failure if we dont go up. Last year was freaky and it boiled down to Farke and his nemesis at Southampton. This year even a blind man can see we are levels above the others. But that just adds pressure doesn’t it.

Before I tackle the thread question, I have to ask a question.

You find Leon scary?, you couldn’t meet a nicer man 😁😁😁

Le Bris has done an excellent job, however he could only be considered manager of the season if he gets Sunderland promoted.

I'm nervous about putting Bielsa in it .

I wasn't initially going to but thought Bielsa being in it would grab more attention.

I don't want the thread posted on twitter, I really mean that Adam if you are reading

Alright take Farke out of it at all.

Focus on the Premier League scenario? Would Pep deserve it for winning the title again over Nuno if Forest finished 3rd or someone like Iraola?

If Forest finish in the top four, Nuno would have achieved something ---- a Champions League place!

We've played the best football this season, scored many wonderful goals.

Fans think we are boring, Burnley are much worse.

The Blunts remind me of a typical Championship side.

The young lads at Sunderland have played some lovely stuff, but they in still learning & as a consequence are inconsistent, as proven when they played us at their place. The Mackems have dropped lots of points late in their games as Ian posted up on another thread earlier.

Should Leeds win the title, Farke is undoubtably the manager of the year, imo!.

Let’s say McKenna got Ipswich 8th, that for me is a bigger achievement than Slot winning the Premier League.

I don't think everybody would agree with you on that point, but thank you all the same, Kev.

Almost grabbed the keys to my nuclear bunker when I read that headline, good discussion point though. I don’t even know which side of the fence my b***s are swinging though, on one hand I applaud the manager who gets his underdogs to defy all odds and over-perform on limited resources but to manage a top team to a title year after year with the pressure involved is to be praised as well.
Winning is everything though and in 5, 10, 20 years no one is going to remember who finished 4th or who managed them.

Maybe BB but I’d still give the Manager of the Season to Slot.

So, would a horse who finishes eighth in the Epsom Derby be awarded racehorse of the year above the winner that has romped the prestigious race?

The only time Liverpool won the PL in the last 35 years was in 2019. So it would be a massive personal achievement for Slot himself, especially as Klopp failed to come close since and with basically the same squad of players.

Slot steps in to Klopps shoes and wins the title.
If he does its an incredible achievement.
