Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 4th February) - Leeds United have made their bed...

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 4th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

They've made their bed...

The window of opportunity for Daniel Farke to strengthen his squad has passed, and fans are not happy! Thousands took to social media last night to voice their concern and anger at the clubs shortsightedness not to bring in reinforcements ahead of a gruelling season finale.

Let's not pretend Farke doesn't have a talented squad. He does. Arguably the strongest in the Championship. But talent alone doesn't guarantee promotion. It doesn't shield players from the inevitable wear and tear of a 46-game season. What happens when injuries bite? What happens when fatigue sets in?

Are we seriously expecting this squad to flawlessly navigate cup runs, International Breaks, and the ever-present threat of suspension? How on earth have we not learnt from our mistakes of last season? Two bad results could see the Whites drop to fourth, and there are still 48 points to play for!

It's arrogant, short-sighted and a slap in the face to the fans who deserve better than this. We'll have to see if the gamble pays off, but right now, all I hear is the deafening noise of a massive missed opportunity.

Leeds turn down Joseph bid

Leeds reportedly turned down a bid exceeding £10 million for striker Mateo Joseph over the weekend, according to Beren Cross of The Athletic. It's understood that Real Betis made the enquiry regarding the Spanish Under-21 international. However, Leeds quickly rebuffed their approach, signaling their intent to retain the young forward.

He recently ended a three-and-a-half-month goal drought, finding the net in Leeds' dominant 7-0 victory over Cardiff City, marking his third of the season, adding to his three assists across 1151 minutes of game time. Despite starting the campaign as Farke's preferred choice, Joseph has since seen his playing time diminish, with Joel Piroe emerging as Leeds' primary attacking threat.

Given Patrick Bamford's recurring injury concerns, allowing Joseph to leave the club, especially with a promotion push on the line, would have been madness. In truth, sending Joseph out on loan wouldn't have been the worst idea, but not without a stronger option arriving.

The club is taking a huge gamble that everyone will stay fit, look how our performances dropped off a cliff towards the run in last season, very risky!

I personally think the drop off in performances at the end of last season was due to us playing catch up from the start of the season and having to approach every game as a must win, full on, minimal rotation etc. It was a pretty herculean effort to catch and then overtake Leicester; easy to say in hindsight, but that was always going to catch up with us. This season, we have been there or thereabouts all season, so I don't fear the same burnout. Noticeably, Farke is using his bench better, and we have better options coming off it. Of course, we can't legislate for injuries, and that is a concern, we'll need a little bit of luck there.

I'd still have liked to have seen us get a 10, something I think we are crying out for in games where teams come to park the bus, but it didn't happen so it's as you were. I think we'll be fine, but ask me again in May! ;-)

I've read some ridiculous statements recently but this takes the biscuit. Any fans who believe this could probably use a good slap in the face.
You could put our entire bench from Saturday into our starting eleven and we'd still have the best team in the league. The only possible position that we needed to cover was the 10, but if we couldn't find a suitable player there's no point signing some donkey for the sake of it.

This basically sums up my feelings.
We had such a strong squad on Saturday. Schmidt didn't even make the bench so getting more players in would have had other (unhappy) players not getting a shirt.
We've got what we've got, let's see how we do.

We don't need everyone to stay fit. Our starting midfield pair have been njured most of the season. Struyjk has been injured and we have kept 3 clean sheets. Bamford has been injured all season. Solomon and Ramizani have both been out for a while with injuries. Firpo and Wober have both been out for a while. We did good business in the summer to put us in a stronger position with depth.

Not concerned in the slightest that we did not add to the squad. It would have been nice to get another 10 in, but it is what it is.

What we have right now is a strong balanced squad, very good depth, not struggling to score and defensively solid, give or take the odd mishap / calamity.

Elland Rd is a fortress and we will in all likelihood amass between 50-60 points from our home games alone.

We are not going to win every game from now until the end of the season, so any result - in isolation - that does not give us three points is not going to generate any concern from my perspective.

I have no doubt the club tried to get players in whom they wanted, but if said player is not available or unwilling to come our hands are tied.

Despite all the fans who took to social media I suspect there are just as many fans who share my perspective.

Well said. If we'd had injuries then there is more reason to bring in players but as it is our injury list has been receding throughout January. If Struyjk had have needed surgery then I suspect we'd have brought someone in. Same if anyone else got injured.

They have made their bed... and it's a right can of worms... a malaphor.

Speaking the truth, how novel in this day and age, when there are spin doctors to feed you all kinds of bullshit. Farke said there would not be any activity in the transfer window, and do we respect him for telling the truth, do we hell no.

The manager said no new players were joining the team, but secretly most people were hoping he was telling a little white lie, and we had irons in the fire. I guess we figured there was always a chance of a surprise.

But now that the transfer window's closed, and no one new is on the team, it's like... deflating? Maybe we should've just trusted what he said in the first place... and we would not have gotten ourselves lathered up into a froth.

A glance at the fixtures shows 10-12 games for which we will be favourites, so even if we drop points against better sides we should still have enough to get us over the 90 point mark.

This is no doubt the board’s assessment too, but fails to factor in away form, injuries, tail-offs in performance or the dreaded International Break.

Yes we have the best squad in the league, but we need consistency for the next few months.

Strap in.

I actually find it funny that some fans get into a real hump because we didnt sign anyone. Its as if they know better than anyone at the club, and the club should just pander to these type of fans who want it all their own way, all the time. And if they dont get what they want, they scream and shout, and probably sit at home in a huff.

It is illogical to be top of the league when we have had so many injuries. There must be something wrong here... could there be a correlation between making late and wrong substitutions as the reason for our success?

Yes!!! that must be the logical explanation!!!

So basically we have the best squad, our bench is better than most starting 11s.

No excuse for Farke to not get top and by a good distance then, 10+ points.

Over to you Mr Farke.

So we have the best squad in the league by a country mile but still play away games like a bottom 3 side, let the players play with the freedom we showed on Saturday and stop the soul destroying negative football playing for a point & hoping for 3. Play for 3 points and if we get 1 or lose move on and win the next.
The opposition know how we’re going to play away before a ball is kicked and set their stall out accordingly, let the players loose and build up a decent lead at the top and then any end of season slump is moot.
Leicester built up a massive lead last season and when they fell off the cliff they had enough in the bank to see them through. Faint heart never missed the boat ( in reply to Sean Nile’s thread ) 😁

Now don't forget children keen eyes on Sunderland, Burnley, and Sheffield united. Sharp eyes on all all the players they brought in during the January transfer window. Report on their every success. Mention how astute their mangers were, and how the received financial backing, and at the same time emphisize every little fault we make, you know, injuries, sick notes, misses chances, bad corners, stupid substitutions.

That will be your homework until the end of the season. Now off you go... toodle-loo my little pretty ones.

I agree with most things mentioned here but there are still 4 teams in the mix and a slight drop in form and we're in play off positions
