Who gets relegated?

Post by Cjay »

Not directly related to us this, but could be next season.

Was a time all 3 promoted clubs going down after 1 season was quite rare, we are on target for the 2nd season in a row.

Currently the 3 relegation slots in the Premier League are occupied by Leicester, Southampton and Ipswich.

Southampton look gone, would take a minor miracle for them to survive at this point, 10 from safety (which could increase if Wolves win today).

Ipswich and Leicester still have hope, 2 points from Wolves who play Liverpool today.

It looks like 3 front 4.

Above Wolves West Ham are already on 27 points, Moyes seems to have saved Everton.

So looks like 3 from Leicester, Southampton, Ipswich and Wolves.

So who will go down?

But also is the gap between the Premier League and Championship getting wider? You'd have thought Ipswich and Leicester especially would have a decent chance, but no they are struggling massively.

Is it a concern for us? Would we have fared any better had we gone up instead of Southampton?

So two parts to this thread :)

The bottom 3 have played 75 matches between then so far this season with 50 collective defeats.

Next season will be very different to this one should we be promoted.

Gone for Ipswich, Leicester & Southampton but there could still be a twist in the plot yet. We would probably be in the bottom 4 as well but the club would likely have made more signings if promoted and if they were as good as Solomon, Tanaka etc we would have made a good go at staying up.
Confident we’re going up this season but I’m not daft enough to take anything for granted, this is Leeds we’re talking about.

Wolves are poor, but should have enough to pull away from the bottom three, although they have some tough upcoming fixtures & have to go to St Marys & Portman Road, plus a home match against Leicester. Those three games alone could define Wolves season.

Hopefully, our board is not daft enough to wing it. I don't think they would be, though.

Chose the same but will be interesting to see what happens in the final few matches if it's still close.

Forest & Bournemouth showing what can be achieved though with the right investment and coaching.

Forest took a chance when they got promoted, signed 22 players and another 5 on loan so broke the FFP rules getting docked 4 points. Massive gamble that could have easily backfired but it makes you think…………

It was the Forest owner who decided to invest heavily in the playing side. Non of this build slowly season on season and he was correct to do so because at the end of the day it was his money to lose if they'd gone back down anyway.

In other words no point in being a billionaire if you can't have a bit of fun with the football authorities.

If we go up I think that the board will want to stay up and build accordingly. I think they will spend.

How easy do you think that will be? Last 6 teams that went up failed to attract sufficient talent and I wonder why a good prem player/quality overseas player risks relegation with zero protection. Bit like leaving a well paid secure job for a company under threat of administration

Worth noting though that is Leicester and Southampton go down it is 2 teams that were relegated 2 seasons ago so in effect they had already proved that they weren't good enough previously. Similarly Burnley going down was a team that had gone down 2 years previously so the same scenario.

We have also seen with Luton and Ipswich that they were teams that maybe progressed too quickly having gone from league 1 to Prem very quickly and as such had a lot of league 1 players in their squad.

However looking at the prem table and it is noticeable that the teams occupying the bottom 4 places have well less than a point per game and look to be comfortably finishing on less than 40 points. When we went down we probably weren't far off having a similar record to Man U's at this point of the season.
I love leeds united, may I never admit to it. :shhh:

Indeed, the majority of the highest level footballers won't be attracted to Leeds because we are supposedly a big club.

Ipswich will keep battling and McKenna will get the most out of them. If they can get their nose ahead of Wolves, I’d give them every chance to stay up.

We have so far shown that we can attract players that were probably better than where we are as a club. Ampadu had been on loan to top flight clubs. Rodon stepped down to sin for us permanently rather than a lower level prem club. Ramazani came from La Liga. So we do have a bit of pull and the key would be to recruit the right quality wherever they come from. As shown previously we were able to attract Raphinha, we were able to attract German and Spanish internationals.

We attracted Raphinha with clauses that gave him an out. I know you hated those clauses so it's unlikely we attract that quality again...
