Interesting how people are crediting our relentless pressure for wearing Sunderland down, making it possible for us to dominate the second half and ultimately win the game, yet rate Aaronson and Gruev - two of the players most responsible for that pressure - so low. Both have had more complete games for us in the past, but both were instrumental last night.

Solomon, Firpo, Bogle, Piroe and Tanaka, were probably most responsible for that for me. Solomon in particular.

Piroe's performance last night seems to gave split opinions with score ranging from a low of 6 to high of 8. Personally I scored him low but he did improve after Joseph came on to lead the line.

I think for the majority of the game Piroe was tidy.

It wasn't spectacular but what he did was done well, he held the ball up, laid it off, some nice touches.

When you think of how good Sunderland are on the break that was very important.

And when he dropped into the 10 he was creative (most chances created on the pitch).

Other players like James seemed more involved but it was largely ineffective, shots off target, dribbles into blind alleys.

I think what Piroe did may have been largely unspectacular but it was done well.

Even his shooting he only had two but 1 of them was basically the best shot we had before the goal.

I think he was very good at making sure we kept the ball (I imagine his passing accuracy will have been higher than everyone bar the defence).

So that was why I felt he deserved a high score because I think he did his job effectively even if much of it was on the face of it a minor thing.

Even won a few headers which isn't his biggest strength.

I think he occupied the Sunderland defence very effectively

A few of players weren't at their best last night and I thought Piroe was just about in that category as well. In fact if Aaronson hadn't been having one of his poorer games it's likely Piroe would have felt the hook instead but as it turned out by him dropping into the no'10 role it helped us link the player a little better.

Of course if Piroe had scored the winner we'd have all given him a 9 :)

I thought our central midfielders were very average last night, interestingly enough Farke made his first changes in the centre of the park.

On the ball, Piroe was very good, showed some neat footwork.

Much more involved in games of late, 20 very good pieces of play from Joel last night.

I agree with your outlook on the game. Everyone plays their part, and it is the sum of all the parts that share the outcome. Certain players’ get the plaudits as is inevitably the case. It was a great Team performance with a great outcome.

Haven’t viewed other ratings yet, but here’s my take:

Meslier - 8 (immense, no win without his early saves)
Bogle - 7.5
Firpo - 7
Ampadu - 6 (not his best day…soundly beaten on Sunderland’s goal)
Rodon - 7.5
Tanaka - 6.5
Gruev - 5.5 (not his best day at the office)
James - 7 (picked up the pace late, but was pretty poor early on)
Aaronson - 5.5 (not a good day at the office for him)
Solomon - 7.5 (was our MOTM for the first half, but wore down as the game ensued)
Piroe - 7 (tale of two halves)

Joseph - 7 (nice hustle and pressure from him)
Struijk - 9 (MOTM)
Rothwell - 8.5 (immense effort to drive us forward and place two beauties in the box for Struijk to finish)
Ramazani - 6.5
Byram - n/a
