When did Leeds last have a great goalkeeper?

Post by WhiteRose »

Watched some great goalkeeping this weekend Henderson yesterday and pope and Raya have already made some great saves in today’s game.

Got me thinking who would you say was the last great goalkeeper Leeds had?

For me no one comes close to Nigel Martyn 23 years after he left. It’s sobering looking season by season who we have had since - schmeichel was good and I wouldn’t be cruel enough to Mes by pretending he hasn’t had his moments but its crucial we get it right this summer.

Easy question easy answer. You answered it.

I suppose Robbo was pretty good too. He did have 41 England caps and a long premier league career

Ha ha I did think that as I posted it the rest hardly put up much of a fight - maybe the worst would be a better question - though maybe Casilla is hard to beat on that one too.

I'd argue Rob Green or Kasper Schmeichel

Nigel Martyn arguably the best keeper we have ever had

But he did get a cap from the crowd to keep the sun out of his eyes... so somebody must have loved him, or perhaps it was pity.

Robbo may have been a good goalkeeper but when it comes to negative punditry about Leeds he is a close second to him who shall not be named.

Nigel Martyn is our best ever keeper.
Kasper Schmeichel, Paul Robinson and John Lukic were also decent.

Cap or blindfold, he was better with the blindfold

David Harvey was who I picked to be when in goals as a kid. Won an FA Cup medal, Championship medal & voted keeper of the tournament in the 1974 World Cup Finals.

Not for Leeds though, unfortunately.
We let him go to Brum for a small fee, iirc.

Paul Robinson was a good keeper but clever rather than great.
By clever I mean he assessed a situation and usually didn’t put himself in a position to be at fault, making him seem better than he was.

I had a season ticket at the time, directly in line with the Kop six yard box and it used to infuriate me the times he should have gone for a cross but didn’t or pulled out of a situation where other goalkeepers wouldn’t.

Can't count Seaman. He never played.

Always bothered me when the kop would give him stick as an opposing keeper (as they did every keeper). Bit unfair on him as he was a Leeds fan, his boyhood club, and was sent packing because we couldn't afford a youth team.
