MOT forum best centre back pairing

Post by Cjay »

Bit different this one, as it's a 2 player position just going to have a massive poll with everyone involved and the top 2 will be the winners.

2 votes per person.

Fabio Cannavaro
One of only 3 defenders ever to win the Ballon d'Or

Franz Beckenbauer
The first defender ever to win the Ballon d'Or

Bobby Moore
World Cup winning England Captain

Daniel Passarella
Double World Cup winner and Captain in one of those.

Franco Baresi
Captain of the Legendary 3 time European Cup winning Milan side

Sergio Ramos
Won absolutely everything over 20 years with Real Madrid and Spain

Gaetano Scirea
The man who kept the Legendary Baresi out of the Italy side for 4 years whilst winning it all with Juventus.

Alan Hansen
Stalwart of the great Liverpool side, won everything at club level and a double Hall of Fame member.

Gérard Pique
Barcelona icon, one of the greatest Spanish defenders ever who won everything for club and country.

Alessandro Nesta
The complete defender and air to the crown of Maldini and Baresi.

Giorgio Chiellini
The best defender of the Italian modern era who was still winning trophies in his late 30s.

Virgil van Dijk
Influential Dutch Liverpool Captain whose been leading Liverpool to all the trophies for years.

John Terry
A warrior of a man, greatest England cb of the last 40 years atleast.

Mattias Sammer
The air to Beckenbauer, silky German efficiency and a Ballon d'Or winner.

Beckenbauer and Baresi, that wasn't easy, could have had any from 6 in there with Franz

Cannavaro and Baresi. Neither blessed with great pace, but both read the game so well they didn't need it.

This needs a bump again now.

Bobby Moore has overtaken Cannavaro and caught up Baresi.

Bit surprised

Any more votes

Also don't forget the other polls all still active

Different era’s = different skill sets. Modern day footballers are predominantly more technical and better athlete’s. So for me Ramos and VVD.

He was a great, superb technician, great ball player. Calm and cultured. Generation gap thing here, modern footballers are faster an fitter but class is class whatever the era. There hasn't been a CB as good playing for England since imo. Saw him a couple of times late in career at Craven Cottage playing for Fulham and once in the late sixties for West Ham..

Worlds #1 defender 64-70

I can understand that.

I'm sure he was a fine player.

His 2 nearest challengers were far more decorated individuals and successful at club level and international.

Baresi was part of one of the greatest club sides ever, a multiple European Cup winner and not only won a World Cup but nearly won 2 others.

Cannavaro is a World Cup winner as well and the only defender ever recognised by FIFA as the best player in the world and one of only 3 defenders ever to win the Ballon d'Or.

Maybe it's 1966 nostalgia? Maybe it's true.

I don't know just unexpected for me, didn't expect Bobby Moore so high

Not the first either it's quite fun tbf

Part of the different era thing inbvolves great players sticking with lesser clubs... Moore would have played for a top european club winning multiple trophies if he were contemporary. West hame were never going to play for major honours. He did win a WC and could have won a second for me had Banks not been (food) poisoned for the QF v Germany. That 70 England team maybe the greatest in our history. No Euros back then so you got one chance every four years. We didn't qualify 5/5 teams for the CL back then either

I'm plreasently surprised he's doing so well but I didn't vote for him

Good point about the different era thing and players sticking about.

Plenty of great players rave about Bobby so I'm sure he deserves his place if he gets it.

So far before my time my knowledge is limited to the basics.

May have to read a bit more.
