Gabriel Gudmundsson- Welcome
Reports we are close to signing versatile Lille player and Swedish international Gabriel Gudmundsson.
He made his debut as a teenager in Sweden and has already made over 300 appearances.
He has played multiple roles including left wing, left midfield, centre midfield and centre back.
He has spent the last few seasons as a squad player playing mainly left back or left wing back for Lille in France.
He is a physical player known for his aerial abilities and body on the line approach.
And also an attacking instinct and ability to progress the ball.
Downside is he is prone to being caught out of position and rarely scores or creates goals himself.
He is also a bit of an unknown as he is mainly a backup player at Lille with only roughly 55-60 league matches worth of minutes.
But he is experienced and versatile and reasonably well thought of hence why he was used more in Europe for Lille than domestic.

Anyone else prefer to hear the words brilliant, goal scorer, creative, genius, world class, magical, unplayable rather than versatile, physical, experienced, multiple roles, squad player when describing our potential signings ??????
Football is 90% mental, the other half is physical.
Re: Gabriel Gudmundsson- Deal close
Can I just say I haven't been unfair

That is what he is, he's only started about 80 games in 4 seasons.
If you want to think of it positively he's a Dallas type player.

Flying to Leeds tomorrow morning.
Re: Gabriel Gudmundsson- Deal close
Not having a pop at your analysis but if he’s anything near Stuarty I’d have him in a heartbeat. Could do with a couple of statement signings to settle the nerves though.

He will be when he puts on the white shirt of Leeds.
That red shirt is hindering his career.

We are building a team from the back, although we still have the goon between the sticks, lurking!!!

The thing is we can't have the marquee type signings without making signings like this. His versatility means we don't have to pad the squad out with excess players 3 deep in every position. As such it means we don't have to buy 2 or 3 players at £5m to £10m each. Instead we buy one and the rest of the money can be put into the pot towards getting the 1 or 2 marquee signings.

Who would we consider Victor Orta's most multi facetted signing (if he ever made one) because they can be invaluable to a manager.
Alioski and Firpo are the first that spring to mind even though they weren't supposed to be, but just went where they wanted.

I agree. A player's "value" is different for every team's situation and strategy.weasel wrote: ↑Sat Jul 05, 2025 9:44 pm The thing is we can't have the marquee type signings without making signings like this. Buy a number of top league experienced players at strongly negotiated prices, then splurge on positions of greatest need.
For me, that's a striker. I'd have no problem us paying 50 big ones or more from our budget for a proven goal scorer at top level.
Right now spend big on a 9.
Bring in a big and experienced goalkeeper, a box-to-box midfielder, a left back (fellow who subject of this thread is just fine), and a winger to replace Solomon (please, please not Weah - he is nowhere near PL quality).

Yeah similar. The big money on a 9/10 type player. Keeper upgrade is a must but hopefully we don't need to splash out a fortune. Someone steady is better than some highly rated prospect that is learning on the job. I'm hoping for Nick Pope. If Gudmundsson is the starting left back then that seems fine and if we start the season with our 4 wingers being 2 from James, Gnonto, Ramizani and Harrison then that is fine. Don't forget Harrison scored 21 goals and got 16 assists in his 3 premier league seasons with us and was rarely injured - so whilst he could be frustrating he can also win us games.malcolmw wrote: ↑Sun Jul 06, 2025 1:17 am I agree. International with Champions League experience and in his prime. We paid half that for a bit part Centre Half with 1 yr left.
