Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Friday 30th January) Meltdown at Molineux as Palace walk away from Strand-Larsen deal

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Friday 30th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Meltdown at Molineux as Palace walk away from Strand-Larsen deal

After agreeing a four year (loan to buy) deal with Aston Villa for versaitile forward Evann Guessand, Crystal Palace have sensationally decided to walk away from the Jorgen Stand-Larsen deal leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers in a state of panic. Social media lit up like a Christmas tree yesterday lunchtime after Palace lost sight of their senses, entering a £50m (£45 plus add-ons) verbal bid for the Norway International, but having agreed a deal for Evann Guessand, have re-evaluated their position, deciding not to make their bid official.

We now move on to Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. Interest in the French International has cooled since the beginning of the year. Spurs, Juventus, Aston Villa and of course Nottingham Forest have all been linked to the £40m front man, with only Forest putting their money where their mouths are, having had an opening £35m bid rejected. The tricky trees will need to come up with another £5m if they are to close the deal and time is running out. It's been 72 hours since their initial bid; if they were to up their offer, wouldn't they have done it by now?

Wolves have some making up to do, if they want Leeds to complete the Strand-Larsen deal, but how will Leeds respond after being unceromoniously mistreated. If Wolves wait until the summer, the odds are, they'll be another £15m worse off, so they'll want to offload their star asset if they can. Will Wolves go cap in hand to the Elland Road board, and even if they do, will Leeds still be interested? The clock is ticking.

Harry Wilson to see his Fulham contract out

West London sources say Harry Wilson is “increasingly likely” to depart Craven Cottage when his contract expires at the end of the season. A month‑long impasse over a new deal, which the BBC reported was placed on hold last week, has turned speculation into a full‑blown deadline drama, with Leeds United, Sunderland and Everton named as the front‑runners. Wilson has already enjoyed a standout campaign for Fulham, tallying eight goals and four assists in 22 league appearances and holding a WhoScored rating of 7.04.

While Fulham’s board would undoubtedly like to retain their top‑rated winger, they have reached the dizzy heights of seventh, and have a realistic chance of European football next season. Leeds appear to be the favourites, not least because a transfer would reunite Wilson with a cohort of fellow Welsh internationals, goalkeeper Karl Darlow, defender Ethan Ampadu, midfielder Dan James and centre‑back Joe Rodon, offering both a familiararity on the pitch and a clear pathway to a revitalised, Wales‑laden squad.

Sunderland and Everton, meanwhile, are expected to pitch ambitious projects and the prospect of immediate first‑team action, meaning Wilson’s summer decision could shape the destiny of three very different clubs. As the transfer window narrows, all eyes will be on West London to see whether a last‑minute extension can be forged or whether Wilson will embark on a new chapter as a free agent.

Maybe this will become a the new transfer tactic that clubs put in high bid for a player and then pull out after finding out the price. We did it in reverse with Jack Harrison and Swansea did it to us years ago as well. Unsettles the players concerned but as football is a mercenary business anyway and in general it operates like the Wild West who cares.

Also we shouldn't be going anywhere near Strand Larson for the amounts mentioned as it's far too risky for a club with a tight budget and could set us back years if he failed to impress.

Morning EB et all,

Wolves with egg on their face, shouldn't have gone chasing those golden eagles.

I hope that Wolves come crawling back and try to get the Leeds board to buy him, I hope they tell them to do one or at least low ball them with a cheaky £25m take it or leave it offer.

Wilson is having the season of his life, but look at the previous years, he's been a squad player, mainly coming off the bench, would he improve our team, maybe, if we can get him on a free and the wages arent too ridiculous then its worth a punt but we shouldn't be spending millions on him, when we could still get Ryan Kent 😆

It seemed out of character for Palace to pay so over the odds for JSL so they probably were more interested in 'disrupting' rather than a genuine intention to complete .If the 49ers and DF think that he's worth their previous offer it seems more important to actually get it done rather than playing silly buggers for the sake of heaping more misery on Wolves. It is far too important to achieve survival this year to run the risk of finding ourselves falling just short of the necessary points tally because we didn't have a proper replacement for DCL if he should get injured.

Wolves don't really have a choice but to sell JSL. If they wait until the summer and they're relegated, his price drops dramatically.
Our position is now stronger.

That is still a huge fee for him, imo!

30 would be my limit with some appearance and goals bonuses. That would make him our most expensive player ever I think

It's my upper limit,but I agree.

Maybe 20 and throw in Joffy, Piroe, Gyabi, Schmit as hey will be useful to Wolves next term

I'm unsure if JSL is the right choice for Leeds, he would certainly add more firepower options, but I'm still a bit sceptical.

I think Joffy & Schmidt loans are tied until the end of the season.

Gyabi is no longer a Leeds player, he's on Hull's books & is currently injured atm.

A large chunk of Rutter's price was bonuses and I doubt he hit any targets while with us. It's him, Aaronson or Rodrigo but all come in under 30 for sure with the best guess being 25-27 for each of them

JSL or not. It's interesting to see how nervous we are about spending what we see as "big" money.

£30m-£40m is a lot, especially to us. Yet we regularly see that being spent on a squad player for the "top" sides. I know we have a timing thing here and maybe in 2-3 season when / if we feel more established at PL level then we will not think twice. Right now we keep saying we don't have the quality everywhere, and quality costs money unless you get some gold nuggets that nobody has found (they are rare).

JSL or not, we are going to have to get used to 30-40m transfer fees. What happens when we float 60m in a years time for someone else? Probably meltdown!

It is a risk, and one that the club are going to have to manage more and more. For what it worth, I think JSL would be a good signing...just not at 40m.

Me too, I think it’s crazy money to pay for a player who might not improve us at a moment when we have little cash to spend.

I suppose if he comes in we might concede less goals down our left flank.

I think we must only go for JSL if we can sell Piroe for 10-15m and get JSL for 35m tops.

The most important thing is that we keep our pants fully pulled up when it comes to signings viewed as risky for the price the selling club wants. Which is very much the case for JSL and what Wolves are asking.
