Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (22nd September) - Leeds Lead Cost Per Point Table, Vindicating Recruitment Revolution

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 22nd September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Vindicatation for Underwood & Evans' Recruitment Revolution

Leeds United’s recruitment reboot is delivering the best bang for the buck in the Premier League. Two summers after Angus Kinnear and Nick Hammond departed for Everton, the internal promotions of Adam Underwood and Robbie Evans have produced a squad that sits top of Transfermarkt’s cost-per-point table, nine points at €11.1 million each. Kinnear left as CEO after overseeing two promotions. Hammond, the experienced transfer consultant who had worked closely with the football operation, followed him to Merseyside. Evans, who arrived from the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 as chief strategy officer and already oversaw recruitment and analytics, became managing director. Underwood, academy manager since 2014 and head of football operations from 2023, was made sporting director with full oversight of player trading.

Underwood’s decade at Thorp Arch gave him deep institutional knowledge. Evans brought the data discipline and long-term planning the ownership group wanted. Head of recruitment Alex Davies completed the trio. The message from chairman Paraag Marathe was explicit: these were leaders who already represented the club. The 2025 summer after promotion was about raising the floor. Leeds spent around £100 million on physical, experienced players who could survive the Premier League: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (free), James Justin, Anton Stach, Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol and others. Critics wanted more attacking flair on deadline day. The result was 14th place and an FA Cup semi-final. Survival first; the signings did their jobs!

With the foundation in place, Underwood, Evans and Davies targeted upgrades rather than volume. Harry Wilson arrived on a free from Fulham after his best season. Tarik Muharemović (£34 million from Sassuolo) and Nico Elvedi added defensive quality. James Trafford, the England international, became the most expensive British goalkeeper in history at an initial £40 million from Manchester City. Net spend stayed controlled. The squad looks younger in key positions and better equipped for a longer stay in the top flight. Early results match the plan; five games, nine points, fifth in the table.

Trafford has settled immediately. Muharemović has started every league minute. Wilson has added quality on the right. The cost-per-point ranking is the public proof that the money has been spent more efficiently than almost anyone else. Leeds no longer rely on one senior deal-maker. Underwood handles the majority of agent and club negotiations. Evans and the analytics team set the non-negotiable profiles. Davies and the scouts refine the shortlists. Daniel Farke signs off every significant target. The club talks about projected exit values and avoiding falling in love with a single name. That discipline showed when they pivoted quickly from Rodrigo Muniz to Calvert-Lewin last year and when they landed their top targets early this summer rather than scrambling on deadline day.

Underwood’s academy background still matters. The same department that produced Archie Gray and others now feeds into first-team recruitment . The long-term aim, as Underwood has said publicly, is an established Premier League club that can push toward the top half rather than yo-yo. The graphic will change as the season progresses. Nine points from five games is a small sample. Yet the underlying picture is already clear: after losing two experienced executives to a rival, Leeds promoted people who knew the club and the ownership’s methods. They spent significant money in both windows without losing financial control. They have an international goalkeeper who looks the part, a defence that can compete, and a points-per-pound ratio that currently leads the league.

Is this the end of the road for Dan James?

Leeds fans were jubilant when, in July 2025, Dan James put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at Elland Road. Fourteen months on, he is not the same player. The deal was meant to lock in a winger who had been central to Farke’s best sides: pace, pressing, work-rate. Last season, the drop-off began. Injuries ate months of the campaign; he made 19 league appearances, started only a handful, scored none, and finished the year on the edge of a team that had already changed shape.

That shape is now settled. Farke’s back three, in place since the Manchester City game late November 2025, made Leeds harder to play through. It also squeezed out the traditional winger. The wide jobs belong to wing-backs who can defend first: Jayden Bogle, James Justin, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Melvin Bard. The attacking jobs belong to strikers and No.10s who can receive between the lines: Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor, Harry Wilson, Brenden Aaronson, Jean-Matteo Bahoya.

The minutes this season are thin. Three Premier League substitute appearances. No league start. Roughly 50 minutes across Brentford, Newcastle and Crystal Palace, the last of those a 67th-minute swap for Bogle. The Carabao Cup was the only place he started: a goal in the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, then 65 minutes at Chelsea, where he gave away the penalty that began a 6-3 defeat and Leeds’ exit. Wilfried Gnonto hit the same wall and left on loan.

James is still here because of a contract that is only 14 months old, not because the system has a role for him. At 28, the burst that used to define him is no longer an argument for selection, neither is his effort! He simply does not fit. January is the first real chance to move him. Keep him and Leeds carry a senior winger in a side that does not use wingers. Sell him and they cut a popular professional three years early. Waiting until next summer only makes it harder. Fans were right to cheer that signature last July; the football since then has been a different story.

Hopefully the 4 international games coming up will give Dan James enough minutes to get some rhythm back into his game and then we see better from him going forward.

Your argument seems to be that in the premiership the trend is towards despencing with wingers, and therefore Leeds should follow suit.

But contrary to your statement the elite clubs invest in wingers.

Arsenal: Bukayo Saka (RW), Gabriel Martinelli (LW), Noni Madueke (RW), Christos Tzolis (LW)

Manchester City: Jérémy Doku (LW/RW), Antoine Semenyo (LW/RW), Iliman Ndiaye (LW/RW), Allan (RW), Phil Foden (RW/LW)

Liverpool: Bradley Barcola (LW), Cody Gakpo (LW), Federico Chiesa (RW/LW), Víctor Muñoz (RW)

Chelsea: Pedro Neto (RW/LW), Estêvão (RW),

Manchester United: Bryan Mbeumo (RW), Amad Diallo (RW), Marcus Rashford (LW)

Unless of course Daniel Farke the genius that he is, is attempting to evolve football to a new level bereft of wingers.

Just proves what cheapskates we are, paying so little for each point.

I wasn't cheering Dan James signature last July because we became a PL club once again. Had we not been promoted I would have been happy for Dan to sign on for another 2 years. He'll never be a proven consistent PL player. At 28, his ship has sailed in that regard. Just having speed alone was never going to be enough to succeed at this level and sadly that's all he appears to have. The wayward crosses and shots and a constant inability to get his head up at the right moment make the world of difference at this level and I hope we can release him as soon as possible. People say he is just a squad player now and that's fine. But you want squad players to occasionally produce off the bench but I think even that is beyond him now.

Dan is entitled to see out his contract at the end of the day which will not be of benefit to Leeds. Two major blunders in handing out contract extensions in the last 14 months imo and giving James a 4 year extension to 2029 was one of them.

I've seen two data sites produce these stats over the last two days. One site said we had the best points per pounds and another said it was Hull.

Stats are very basic... they're about as pertinant as the assist stat.

Well said that man, stats are pretty pointless for us mere fans, the only stat I'm ever interested in is the goal stat, and one where LU are the main beneficiary .
Assists are fantasy and exactly where they belong.

How many points to stay up this season ?

Super computer in the Daily Mail is predicting Spurs will finish 18th and go down with 43 points on GD.

Oh and Fulham to finish 19th on 40 points with Coventry 20th on 39 points.

Can't see whoever finishes bottom 3 getting that many points to be honest but I could see 43 points being needed to stay up.

West Ham got 39 last season courtesy of three points from us when we were on the beach!

Our only priority should be getting to 44 points and staying up. That's why the point gained on Sunday was so important as we kept our early season momentum going.

We can't be counting any chickens yet and perhaps should be a bit more humble about those hard earn't draws which last season were ultimately so vital.

I'm going to be very disappointed if we only get 44 points. Especially as I keep reading we got a hell of a lot stronger in the window...

And me too!

I predicted 45 last season, we bettered it by 2 achieving 47 points.

7 to 10 must be within our grasps with a squad we've upgraded.

Spending £75m on Trafford & Muharemovic was surely a statement in itself.

Super computer is currently predicting 51points.

I'd take that now in a heartbeat :)

We did get stronger, but a lot of teams got stronger. You have to constantly improve in the EPL just to keep up.

It's funny that the article lauds our transfer performance under the new guys. When the old guys Kinnear and Hammond are just a whisker behind us in the statistical table cited. Virtually the same performance. You can tell another International break has arrived just by reading the Breakfast Debate. :roflmao:

I don't like this constant knocking of Dan James (and Brendan Aaranson). DJ has always been cinconsistent, he was for us in the championship but over full seasons he more than contributed. He could just as easily not score in 20 matches in the prem then score 3 in 4 games as a sub.

His pace may not be quite what it was but I reckon he is still pretty darn fast, he has shown it on occasions this season. The fact we don't play with wingers is no reason to ditch him. Having him is a great option if plan A isn't working and we need to switch to having a pacey winger mid game. Or even just to give Bogle a rest by bringing DJ on as an ultra attcking wingback.

Looking at the minutes he has played he has one goal in approximately 200 minutes, certainly far from disaster, and that goal was against premier league opposition. So it is hardly like he has been dreadful. Yes he has missed some chances but every player does that and we have to accept that he will miss the target. Maybe Bahoya will be an upgrade, though from the youtube stuff and his stats it would appear he is in the same mould - pace to burn but little end product.

Aaronsen too will have his moments. Yes he has been fairly poor this season but again that is what we can see from BA and then maybe he will have some games where his end product is great. He certainly played his part last season.

So yes in time sure we should be looking to upgrade, but in reality if we keep progressing then in time most players will be replaced. But certainly for now they are a valuable part of our squad, they will have their part to pay, and us not having to spend on their replacement meant we didn't have to stretch our funds thinly and as such we could buy quality rather than quantity.

We have to keep this in perspective as it has been pointed out before, the only reason we survived last season was because most of the teams playing in the league were weaker😃🤭😄

And it is a paradox that from that table the teams down the bottom of the table are spending the most money and those near the top are spending the least.

If we want to really succeed given that logic, we need to spend nothing in the January transfer window.
