Good Morning. It's Friday 16th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...
Nmecha contract talks stall over game time
Leeds United are yet to reach agreement with striker Lukas Nmecha over a new contract, with talks stalled by the player’s demand for greater assurances on regular first-team involvement. The 27-year-old Germany international is free to leave for nothing next summer, leaving the club facing the prospect of losing him without a fee unless progress is made soon. Nmecha joined as a free agent two years ago, becoming Leeds’ first signing after their return to the Premier League. His goals last season were an important factor in the side’s survival, yet his role has diminished significantly this term.He has managed only 75 league minutes in the top flight, all as a substitute, and remains well down the pecking order behind the consistent Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That lack of game time is understood to be the main barrier to an extension. While Daniel Farke continues to value Nmecha’s work rate and impact from the bench, the club has so far been unable to provide the playing-time guarantees his representatives are seeking. Sources close to the situation suggest Leeds still hope to retain him as a useful squad option, but they are conscious that replacing a striker of his profile would require substantial investment.
In 37 appearances for the Whites he has scored seven goals. Although his overall contribution has been solid, elements of his hold-up play and distribution have drawn scrutiny. With opportunities limited, it is little surprise that alternative options are being explored. Interest has already emerged from clubs in the higher reaches of the Championship, where a more prominent role would be available, as well as from sides in the Bundesliga. Leeds remain reluctant to allow Nmecha to depart without compensation and would prefer to secure a new deal that protects his value. However, with negotiations yet to advance and the player’s camp exploring other destinations, the likelihood of an amicable separation next summer is growing.

Liverpool Join Race for Muharemovic as European Interest Intensifies
Liverpool have become the latest heavyweight club to keep close tabs on Leeds United central defender Tarik Muharemovic. The 23-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international, signed from Sassuolo for £34.1 million in the summer, has made an immediate impact in the Premier League and is now firmly on the radar of several of Europe’s elite sides. He arrived at Elland Road as a direct replacement for Pascal Struijk and has settled quickly under Daniel Farke. The left-footed centre-back has featured regularly, showing the physicality, composure on the ball, and defensive reliability that first attracted attention during his time in Serie A.His strong start has not gone unnoticed. Inter Milan remain attentive after missing out on him last summer, when they reportedly agreed personal terms before the deal collapsed. Barcelona have continued to monitor his progress after tracking him previously, while Bayern Munich have identified him as a leading target for 2027 amid their own long-term defensive planning. Liverpool’s interest adds further weight to the growing list of admirers. For Leeds, the situation presents a familiar dilemma. The club have been praised for unearthing a high-potential defender at a relatively early stage, and with Muharemovic under contract until 2031, they hold a strong negotiating position.
Sources close to the club indicate they have no intention of selling in the near term, including the January window. Leeds are unlikely to consider any offers unless they represent a substantial profit. Doubling the original outlay would still leave them short of a replacement of comparable quality and age, so any departure would almost certainly require a fee well in excess of £100 million. Whether Liverpool or any other suitor can test that resolve remains to be seen. For now, Muharemovic continues to establish himself as one of the more promising centre-backs in the Premier League, with his performances only increasing the scrutiny from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Everton Should Never Have Let Calvert-Lewin Go – Even at £200k pw
Duncan Ferguson has told Everton they should never have allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to leave, even if it meant paying him £200,000 a week. The former Everton striker and coach made the comments on Overlap Daily, arguing that the club made a clear mistake in letting the forward depart when his contract expired last year. Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 and spent the majority of his career at Goodison Park before leaving as a free agent. Injuries heavily disrupted his final seasons, with the striker missing 529 days through various problems from the start of the 2021/22 campaign. After his exit he was linked with Fiorentina and Sunderland before joining Leeds United, where he has since rediscovered his form. The England international scored 15 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions last season and has added four more in eight games this term. Ferguson, who worked with Calvert-Lewin during his early days at the club, believes Everton were wrong to let him go. “You should never have let Dominic go,” Ferguson said. “I coached him as a young man and put him in my team. He scored his first two goals in the same game, the one I managed against Chelsea. He’s a great player. You should never, ever have let him go.
I don’t know what’s happened behind the scenes, but if he wanted £200,000 a week, give him £200,000 a week. If he wanted £100,000 a week, give him it.” Ferguson also believes Calvert-Lewin deserves a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad. “I don’t see why not. Harry Kane’s there, but Dominic should be in there. He’s 6ft 3in, he’s quick, he’s got a lovely finish, and he gets in the six-yard box. He’s got a tremendous leap. I don’t see many other centre-forwards like him.” The 29-year-old’s performances at Leeds have only strengthened the view that Everton allowed a valuable asset to leave for nothing.
