Both Gracia and now Big Sam have said we have a small squad . . . . . . .
Not really agenda driven when the people paid to assess it say it

Big Sam called it right.
One of the major reasons why we are fighting relegation, two seasons on the bounce.

Re: Big Sam pre Saudi United
You need to have the sense to realise why Bert wanted to work with a small squad at the stage Leeds United were at in his journey to take us back up there with the big guns.
Rocket science it ain't.
The term 'you don't run before you can walk' might help you along, and can be applied to ALL aspects of his work for us.
And i don't doubt for one second that even Bert would've learned a lot from his first ever Prem experience.
And before anyone contemplates something like ' Berts players couldn't even run coz his training regime meant they couldn't even walk' ....dream on.
Bert would've realised how near fatal he came to relegation when ALL the bad stars aligned to fck his key players up, and i'm sure he wouldn't allow that to happen again, he just didn't want that fcking mophead wasting more money we didn't have, or eventually wouldn't have had.

Yes of course, I forgot you're in better a position to know than Sam. I am sure he's on the phone to Tyler Roberts based on your recommendation.

I love Sam's honesty, he doesn't pull any punches & says it as it is.
We can only hope he gets us out of this horrible mess!

Re: Big Sam pre Saudi United
With the complete set of mish mash players we have we could not be in better hands with anyone in the world than Sam.
I just don't think even he can pull it off, he needs more jam than Hartleys, he needs luck around us in spades, we need points i can hardly see coming from anywhere, i've no idea what he's learnt about the shower of shite in training but God speed ffs.
If you manage this Sam i'll be forever in your debt, i'm already a big fan of the no nonsense man, but fck me we need the great escape tune bellowing out at every game, and if he does it with Firpo playing i'll eat as many hats as you want.
Best of British big man.

I'd like to see Bert get a hold of a few of em though, as long as they are man enough to knuckle down to his regime.White Riot wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 6:44 am You could be looking for a while Kenny, we don't do quality![]()

Re: Big Sam pre Saudi United
We've never had the deep squad or even the strong 18 that I would imagine Bielsa wanted.
I know people knock the small squad but if you had 18 players that were all premier league quality then I don't think it is too much of a problem. You'd have a few players in there that are versatile and then you're fairly much okay. You then want your youngsters to be knocking on the first team door.
Man City is the classic case. They have a fairly small squad but it is just all about quality. In it there are a few players who can play in different positions, take Cancelo who could play right back, right wing, left back, left wing and central midfield, he was their equivalent of Stuart Dallas. So they don't have 22 first team players but with having the flexibility they can keep everyone happy. That is the difference. We had a starting XI that probably wasn't premiership quality in every position. We then had a bench of players that some were mid table championship level.
Man City if they were to get an kinjury crisis would then also be able to fall back on their youth. They have youth players that would walk into our first team, not probably but actually would. We have youth players that we have sent out to the championship and lower and haven't even been regular starters.
Bielsa's small squad works but only if the first team squad is strong enough quality wise rather than quantity and then you have the back up of youth players that aren't way below the standard. That was our failing. We got youth players in that were nowehere near the level needed to be first team players - or if they were when we got them we did nothing to improve them because our coaching was non-existent.

Big Sam post Newcastle
Allardyce's here - Fair scoreline?
A fair scoreline would have been a victory for us. Spirit we showed and commitment, at 2-0 we would have gone on. Silly penalties.
Stayed in the game, very good. Shot ourselves n the foot quite often, but showed enough to say if we cut out those mistakes we can get three points. Playing third in the league and should have won it. Our fault we did not win bu missing a penalty and giving two away.
Bamford penalty?
Left it how it was. Hadn't seen any of them taking penalties. I would have thought Rodrigo would have snatched it away if really wanted it. That puts you under even more pressure to score. It can happen to anybody. Happened to us at the worst possible time.
Koch in midfield?
My job to do that. People playing in that position have the ability that Robin has and also the defensive nous means he can make the play happen and stop the opposition with his experience. Terrific asset in that role today. Better when Adam came in alongside him. Young Sam, did the best he could, butgot more possession when Adam came in and pushed Weston forward.
To the wire?
Wanted that. We have t keep our fingers crossed today and tomorrow on the others. We are near that position of let's hope other slip up. Not in our hands, in theirs.
Your mind during those penalties at either end?
First pen disappointing becaue all week it's stay on your feet in the final third, especially in the ox. Happened last week with Pascal and he got a bollocking at the end for diving in. Giving goals away. Cannot afford that because we are not prolific at the other end. Players under pressure lost it at that moment. 'He believed he could win the ball.
Second I am into sure about. Gone either way. Push or not? Tug? Not been given and nothing I can do.
My emotions?
Needed two valium when I came off. Nervous before the game. What the lads gave for me and the staff and the fans, gave us hope going forward. Tried their very best today

WTF? So basically Bamford just decided he would take the pen unless someone bullied him?

Re: Big Sam post Newcastle
He is the designated penalty taker.
Before Rod arrived Bamford and Klich would take them, with rights to the next one taken up when the other missed his.
If Bamford and Rod were using the same system then it was Bamfords turn as Rod missed the last one we had at Cardiff

I can accept someone not scoring, but not taking such a diabolical bad pen as Bamford did. Why not just smash it if you feel nervous.Irish Ian wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 2:16 pm He is the designated penalty taker.
