Would be nice to have a long term plan, I think if the fans could see there was one they would be a bit more patient.

Problem has been there hasn't been one.

Promotion then scrape survival.

No investment in the infrastructure, no investment behind the scenes (been made clear we are run like a lower league club).

Fans just want to see a plan and progress, when we don't they get frustrated.

The short term goals you mention are reflected in our manager list.

The fans and the club may be as bad as each other?

Fans want to see progress but fairly quickly.

But the club plan for the short term with little thought to after.

If we could see a long term plan then I think the fans would ease the pressure and that may help us progress

But it's clear from the managerial list the plan is short term with Top league failures all in contention so in 18 months if we have been promoted there is still a good chance we will be in a similar situation to 6 months ago and frustration grows and the cycle starts again

That's why imo it was vital we got the best man we could, someone fans can get behind.

If Andoni Iraola came in for example the fans would like that and probably even accept a Bielsa like 1st season where maybe we don't quite make it.

But if its Farke or the like and they don't make it frustration grows and pressure grows because everyone knows they were appointed with only the short term in mind.

The club and the fans can help each other but one only happens if the other does the right things

Wilko gets a lot of credit for that. He built the youth system that O'Leary benefitted from later.

I think O'Leary reaped the rewards of Wilkos work at opening the Academy and new training ground at Thorp Arch.

That’s just too sensible Ian!

You’re absolutely right, of course, and realistically there is no reason that our expectations should be any greater than say Leicester’s or Southampton’s, except that our decade of being the very best of the best all those years ago has left a legacy of expectation in us older folk. Our “unrealistic” expectation is based not in logic but in emotion.

The only constant is the supporters.

Therefore by the process of elimination we are the problem.
Perhaps of more of us stopped heaping the unbearable pressure on the club we might actually get somewhere?
I do think the fans are a large part of the problem, we're very quick to turn and once turned it's too hard to change the groupthink

We'll never be the Don's Leeds again so no point comparing todays club with that of the early seventies

Indeed. Many hounded Grayson out despite him gerring us promoted and being close to getting us into the play-offs. His best players leaving, Beckford, Schmeichel, key players being out injured, Kisnorbo and Naylor, and he was still expected to get us promoted despite hardly any investment in players. The fans made the atmoshpere at ER toxic towards the end of his reign. Whilst he may not have been the best manager in the world a little bit spent on players and he might just have got us promoted again. Another manager that was derided for not being able to set us up to defend despite us having a measly defence in the league 1 season up until after the Man U win, coiniceded with a key injury to Kisnorbo, signed for free, and injury to Naylor, our first choice keeper, Higgs, being injured, our left back injured forcing Hughes, a midfielder, to play there etc.

It really amazes me how some fans blame the manager without understanding that if you aven have just 1 or 2 key players out then the whole team can be seriously weakened.

Viera would be an interesting choice. The startling decline at Palace is a worry, but it did coincide with a run of particularly tough fixtures. You'd imagine he has learnt from that experience, but I do also think he'd be a project appointment and it doesn't look like we're going down that route. It's all or nothing on getting straight back up, which itself is every bit as risky as appointing someone deemed a failure at their previous club. I wouldn't be averse to him; whilst it isn't the be all and end all, his name and standing (not unlike Gerard) might encourage players to come here.

Hasn't really done anything, people point to his 1 season at Palace but he has a worse win percentage than Hodgson (both spells).

Pardew
Allardyce
Pulis
Holloway

He ended with 1 win in 12 and 3 games with 0 shots on target.

Then you look at the players Palace have and how much Hodgson improved them it's really poor.

For me he's overhyped because of who he is.

His Premier league win percentage is 26%

Jesse Marsch's was 25%.

He should really be seen in the same way we see Jesse Marsch.

But he is Patrick Vieira, playing legend so it gets glossed over

If he wasn't the player he was he'd get far more scrutiny

Seems to be they're finding it difficult to attract any fcker, unless......they're taking a sensible approach for once and doing some homework, time not being of the essence of course.
