Match Thread Leeds Utd 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday - Post Match Thread

Post by Ellandback1 »

Saturday 2nd September 3:00pm | Elland Road

Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping for a reversal in fortunes when they visit Elland Road at the weekend for a 'no holds barred Yorkshire Derby'. Xisco Muñoz's arrival at Hillsborough 58 days ago has done little to stop the rot. They have lost eight of their last nine matches, and has told his players 'they can't afford to relax for one moment' and must give '200%' if they are to get anything out of the game.

Joel Piroe, Illan Meslier and Joe Rodon are also named in Daniel Farke's line-up after being rested midweek (Piroe was cup-tied). Djed Spence was an option to replace Luke Ayling at right back after joining the Whites on a season long loan from Spurs but will start on the bench. Ian Poveda has recovered from his knock and makes the bench. Daniel Farke will be without Columbian winger Luís Sinisterra who departed to Bournemouth in controversial circumstances on deadline day.

Sam Byram should be fit after the international break, the versatile defender limped off during the opening half of Leeds emphatic 4-3 victory at Portman Road. Leo Hjelde and Jamie Shackleton standby, with Shackleton getting the call. Sam Greenwood has joined Middlesbrough on a season long loan but Darko Gyabi remains at the club despite late interest. Daniel James (groin) will again miss out whilst Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo and Liam Cooper remain long term casualties. Mateo Joseph has recovered from an ankle injury to make the bench. Mallik Wilks misses the trip back to his boyhood club through injury.

The last time the two clubs played, was during Leeds 2019/20 Championship title winning campaign, with Bielsa's babes only winning one out of a possible six points. Throughout their history, Leeds edge victories over their South Yorkshire foes 23 wins v 22.

Maybe I'm well behind in the news department, but why has Shacks got question marks over his future at Leeds, especially after how he has played recently ???????

I like Shackleton, but if the players who should come in, do come in, he'll be redundant!!

I'm not sure redundant is accurate. Maybe not a regular starter for sure, but certainly a valuable squad member.

Agree, Shacks has knuckled down after his loan spells, works very hard hence why DF picks him, hasn't threatened to down tools and can lake in a variety of positions.
Worth keeping for me, maybe not as good as Dallas at this stage, but is our go to utility player.

We don’t know what Dallas will return after such a long lay off. It will take him quite a while to get match sharp.

Oh 100% agree pal, if Dallas comes back 90% of the player he was it'll be a bonus.

He's not redundant. On the contrary, he's a great squad player - vital for any manager to have a few of those.
He'll come to life under DF- already has.

A long forgotten interview given by Jamie Shackleton and what it was like to be compared to the utility player Stuart Dallas.

Interviewer: Well, Jamie Shackleton, can you tell us about playing for Leeds United

Jamie Shackleton: (In a thick Yorkshire accent) Ah, Leeds United, tha' wants to know 'bout playin' for Leeds, does tha? Well, let me tell thee, it were no walk in t'park, I'll tell thee that much.

Interviewer: Aye, go on.

Jamie Shackleton: Back in't day, we didn't 'ave all them fancy training facilities, we trained in't mud, we did. An' our footballs, they were like rocks, not like them fancy Adidas ones nowadays... wot don't gives you concussion like the balls did in the old days, hard they were.

Interviewer: Rocks, you say?

Jamie Shackleton: Aye, and we had to run uphill both ways to get to the stadium, even when we were playin' at 'ome. And our fans, they were proper passionate, they'd throw Yorkshire puddin's at us if we didn't score.

Interviewer: Yorkshire puddin's?

Jamie Shackleton: Aye, Yorkshire puddin's, and if we got a yellow card, we 'ad to eat a whole jar of mushy peas as punishment! and sing Marching on Together for hours on end till our throats were red raw... tell that to them kids nowadays and they wouldn't believe thee. 'ard we had it.

Interviewer: Blimey, that sounds tough!

Jamie Shackleton: Tough? You 'aven't 'eard the half of it! We 'ad to wear flat caps durin' matches, and if we lost, we 'ad to jump off Leeds bridge and swim in the river Aire for hours in end... made men outta boys ah tell thee.

Interviewer: That's quite the challenge!

Jamie Shackleton: Aye, but it made us strong, and we were proud to play for Leeds. It were a different era, it were. Considered oursells Real Madrid of the Yorkshires Dales.

Interviewer: And what about training Jamie?

Jamie Shackleton: Sheep!!! chasing sheep around Thorpe Arch, developed stamina and footwork, and for speed and a bit of pace... chasing chickens... Stuart being Irish was the best chicken chaser on the team ah tell thee. Tell these younguns that chasing chickens, was part of the Jesse Marsch training regime, and they will tell thee that they could well believe thee.

Will be interesting to see who starts at RB. Not sure how he can leave Ayling out at the moment. Don’t get me wrong if he decides to put Spence in good luck to the lad. I just think Ayling is still a focal point of the team.

Whoever plays support the team, SW is never a formality, they are always up for this fixture.

So the game is likely to be closer than most predict.

Ah, the first of this season’s Yorkshire derbies. Despite the fact that SW are propping up the table, it’ll be another hard fought affair, as derbies usually are. Hopefully, we will have the edge, add 3pts to our tally and carry on climbing the table.

Come on Leeds!
