We'll have a lot clearer picture by the end of October, Preston has: Leicester, Ipswich, Millwall, Southampton, and Hull in Oct while Ipswich has it a bit easier with just Hull and Preston as difficult tilts. I expect Leicester to be around the top all season, but their only loss so far was to the Hull team we just took a point off of with 10 men. There is plenty of time for us to claw our way up there.
Another way of looking at our position at this early stage is to look at how many points you need in this league to get promoted. If you look back over the past 5 or so seasons, 89 or 90 points will get you automatic promotion. (93 plus and you're likely to win it)
117 points on the table right now - so if we get 2/3 of the points available to us for the rest of the season, we are likely to go up. :duno:

We have to play Sun, Wed, Sat whereas Hull play Fri, Wed, Sun.

Ayling should have been rested tonight as even some of the youngsters looked leggy.

Anyway a point put us two points off the play-off places already. That is amazing after the pre-season we had.

Yes, I agree with that. Cresswell for Ayling today and Struik captain for the day. Assuming he felt Byrum had to be rested after his injury - hence being on the bench - probably wouldn't have played him if 2nd half had played out better for us. But anyway - a good point.

Bit worried about over-playing Ampadu and Gray. Shouldn't we be having Kamara and Gruev get their feet under them? I know Farke doesn't like too much rotation, but I'd hate to see our 2 main midfielders injured due to over- use - they're our foundation at present. Again, though, if we'd taken some our chances in the first half, maybe his plan was to bring on those two for the final 20 or so?

malcolmw wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 9:25 pm Yes but look at the bigger picture.
At the start of the season we needed to stop letting goals in and build some resilience in defense. Then we needed to start finding players who could score some.

We've done both those things and this pattern will lead to winning more games. Its like playing in a world cup - it's no use starting on fire and then losing momentum at the end. 39 games to play and 117 pints up for grabs.
This team is going to start scoring more goals, and as long as we remain resilient in defense - like the last 2 games - we will win the games we need to.
I hope so.

I'm not on the 1 season to rebuild and happy to go for it next season bus, this is the season, it has to be.

Just feels to me that teams that go up win today, they beat teams as poor as Sheffield Wednesday and WBA at home, they find a way.

We were comfortably the better side until the sending off (and that 1st yellow was soft).

We have only lost 1 game.

A clean sheet today despite having 10 men for a 3rd of the game and a 3rd in a row which is particularly important given Farke has a reputation for not being a great coach defensively.

It was a good point today in isolation but it is another waste and we have had 2 or 3 of those already.

Need to find some consistency in attack, Piroe and Rutter go from brilliant to wasteful on a game by game basis.

Dan James is Dan James.

Summerville should be first name on the teamsheet.

And I'm getting worried about Farke overplaying Gray and Ampadu.

Haven't they played basically every game now including cups :duno:

It's not over of course and you are right about points to play for.

We need to get upto that 2 points per game mark soon though.

We aren't close atm and Leicester, Preston and Ipswich are setting an unusually high points total at this stage.

I think that's the key. The last match was a fantastic showing, and probably raised all of our expectations, but the team is still coming together after what might arguable have been the worst preseason in the team's history in terms of obstacles to overcome.

No point looking at the table for a while. Fairly meaningless. Hull were in the top 6 and they were s**t at home this evening

Perhaps he's still just lacking a little confidence .That lay-off to Somerville was top draw, that would have been a great goal had it been scored.

We could and should have been 2 up at half time and with eleven men for the full game I think we may have nicked it....but with probably only one automatic promotion place available (I think Leicester will walk this league) it will probably be via the play offs if at all.

Undeniably, but playing 9 you have to do better if put through in acres of space. But that touch to Summerville is pretty much all he did this evening. He wasn’t the only one, some very inconsistent displays by most. James was especially poor. Ayling wasted a lot of opportunities to pick a decent pass in promising positions. Shacks offered very little offensively on his side and played a lot of loose passes.

Offensively, with the exception of Summerville we were distinctly average.

But as the saying goes if you can’t win do not lose. Defensively we are looking pretty solid and not getting punished when we do make a mistake at the back, which seemed quite the opposite last season. But quality players tend to punish mistakes.

Seems like his confidence didn't quite have anything in the bank (or at least not very much) after last season. He's a kid and clearly talented, but I'm sure the stench of last season is still there making it easier for his confidence to wane more quickly than it should. This seemed like it may have happened today.

You can only throw away so many and the top 2 this season so far are doing better than normal.

Sheffield United had 14 this time last season Preston have 19
And Burnley who ran away with the league last season only had 12 points after 7 games, long long way to go. But yes of course we need to keep wining games.

Consistency is the key to it, but that`s easier said than done. We are going to have good and bad days, hopefully the good outweigh the bad.

That puts it into perspective too, Green. I'm sure we're all suffering from more than a little shell-shock after the last two seasons and don't want to see those at the top create too much distance between us and them. Besides the practical aspects of the automatic promotion spots, keeping those guys within arm's reach also helps to keep the players at ease and focused more on the the matches than the table. I'm sure DF is all over this last point and keeping their heads on straight.

Agree on Summerville!

On points. The math is incredibly easy. You must average 2 points per game to have a shot at Winning the league or earning automatic promotion.
