Your post was actually very insightful and rather typical of an addict. I have been there - not on betting but other vices. Self assured articulation of why the behaviour is completely under control. Just be careful mate it is often difficult to accept when you are being consumed by a behaviour. A behaviour you constantly reassure yourself you are in complete control of.
Just a suggestion - after your next big poker gig- see if you can avoid any form of betting for the following 6 months. Despite wanting to find reasons why it isn’t convenient at that point in time ( it actually is ) just try it. It will give you some idea of your addiction.
I know a few betting addicts and some do exercise restraint - so it isn’t unusual. There are different scales to most addictions.
People who know me when i'm abroad could and do comment sometimes and consider me an alcoholic, so work this out : When i'm abroad next year i'll get pizzed on my very first night out, i will go out around 5pm and come home when bladdered, fall into bed and wake when i wake, my first drink next morning will be coffee, there will be no beer in my room, i never drink before i leave, after 1 hour i will be starving and searching for a full English wherever, i will then get pissed probably 5 nights out of 7 with 2 days resting coz i've burned the candle at both ends, this could continue for anything up to 6 months (sometimes 1 year)
On my return to England, i won't touch a drop, bar the odd occasion, funeral, special occasion etc, like now i haven't had a beer since June bar Haydock etc and that's been about 5 different occasions tops.
I promise you this, i will have an eye on my gambling - It is not an addiction, i know my limits and always watch my bankroll when pokering, i will also have flights and expenses to keep in check.
