Former England cricketer, Graham Thorpe, dies aged 55.
Really sad news. Followed him since his England A days and he went on to be a world class player. Probably our only world class player through the mid to late 90s.
I read his autobiography. He had a lot of troubles. Alcoholism and divorce. That was around 2006/7. I'm sure he had more. He could have played more tests and had an even better record.
Instantly brought back memories of David Bairstow. RIP Graham Thorpe. You left us with many great memories. Not just the runs but the style in which you played.
I remember Talksport used to have a great song that they created and aired on a regular basis when he was England manager. Takes me back I remember it like yesterday as it was always on when I was driving to and from work down Shooters Hill.

Presumably your career as highwayman didn’t go to plan
I was at Plumstead nick back then. Abbeywood is now a rather sought after location following the building of the Elizabeth Line. It was a-bit of a hole back then.

What did you do?
I never had you down as a criminal.
I declare my love for Saint Daniel and I can shoehorn him in to any conversation.
I think most people really warmed to Sven and wanted him to do well at the England helm. He always came across as a really nice, calm kind of chap, albeit there must have been a steely determination there to get to where he got to in the world of football management...........and a bit of a dark horse by all accounts, Ulrika in her prime !!
This is why it doesn’t take a massive leap of imagination to believe the story in Dietmar Hamann’s book, ‘The Didi Man’, about what Sven said to him while on a post-season tour to Thailand with Manchester City in 2008.
“One morning I was on a sun lounger by the pool when I saw Sven walking towards me carrying a silver tray with a bottle of champagne and two glasses on it,” Hamman wrote.
“It was still only ten o’clock in the morning…Sven came over and put the champagne on the table next to me, then placed one glass in front of me and the other by his lounger.
“I looked up and said, ‘Boss, what are we celebrating?’… He turned to me and smiled that gentle smile of his and took on the air of a Buddhist philosopher as he said, ‘Life, Kaiser.’ Then after pausing for dramatic effect, ‘We are celebrating…life.’”
