Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 29th January) - Leeds Targett Newcastle ace

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 29th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Leeds Targett Newcastle ace

Leeds have made a surprise inquiry for Newcastle United's left-back, Matt Targett according to multiple newspaper sources in the last 24 hours. The 29-year-old has experienced a significant downturn in playing time at St. James' Park, largely due to persistent injuries that have hampered his progress over the past 18 months. Since making his move permanent from Aston Villa for £15 million in the summer of 2022, Targett has only managed to start 12 matches, a stark contrast to the 16 starts he enjoyed during a four-month loan spell prior to the transfer.

Now, he finds himself further down the pecking order, behind Lewis Hall, Lloyd Kelly, and Dan Burn. Consequently, Newcastle are understood to be receptive to offers for the player, with Leeds United emerging as one of the favourites for his signature. The Magpies are expecting a fee of between £11m - £15m, which sounds ludicrous given the circumstances.

Are Leeds running out of time & options

With the deadline for the January transfer window looming, pressure is mounting on Daniel Farke and the Leeds recruitment team from long suffering fans on social media to come up with the goods!

Three players hotly linked with moves to LS11 have not materialised. Emi Buendia has signed for Bayer Leverkusen, Louis Barry has gone to Hull, whilst Brighton’s Julio Enciso has penned a loan move to Ipswich Town. With a cash pot of £300m up for grabs, it's not surprising that the chasing pack have all strengthened this month,

Mixed messages from the gaffer do not help. Daniel Farke has gone from 'not being a fan of bringing in new faces in January', and 'not wanting to upset the dynamics in the dressing room' to performing a 180 degree U-turn during his recent (Burnley) pre-match press conference revealing receptiveness for a playmaker, centre-forward, and a versatile centre-back.

The blind may stumble past opportunities, but the awake, with hands tied by inertia, watch them slip away, just as easily.

That being said our promotion rivals has signed a bunch of losers, castoffs, players past their best, injured, contentious, misfits, and trouble makers and lost a lot of money doing so.

They will live to regret all the stupid signing they have made, and all the time they will waste trying to integrate deadbeats into their team. It is a horrible bad move for them, and we should be rejoicing that they are so stupid.

They have just handed promotion to us on a plate.

Rumors in some corners that there is a premier league striker coming in on loan -if it’s true I’d guess Cameron Archer

Why is it we always seemed to get linked to players who have a poor injury record. Hopefully this is just another non story.

I’d take that.

It was always the case that Buendia would only have come at the last minute if at all if there was no more attractive offer on the table and given that it would have fulfilled all the criteria it was well worth holding the option open as long as possible. We made three signings very late in the last window and of those 2 viz Tanaka and Solomon have been outstanding . Until the window closes I will await developments with interest while hoping that at some stage I will grow up and learn to treat this entire Sky Sports confected hysteria with the contempt it deserves.

Both ‘No’ for me.

I don’t like his face or his injury record.

I’m content with the squad but if it’s a loan of better quality, I’m fine with that but don’t care if we don’t.

Exactly, every player we’ve been linked with recently has a bad injury record leading to virtually no game time, I know options are limited in January but can we at least look at someone who’s fit. Maybe we should offer Bamford in a swap deal & if they say no tell them to stick it. 🤔

Good morning, EB et all,

I think that move is off Targett, the fans will be in uproar (and rightly so) if we splash a load of cash on a left back (which I don't think we need), especially one who has such a poor injury record, it's not like he's forcing his way into the Newcastle team, they seem desperate to get rid of him, we only paid £5m for Bogel so why would we spend another £15m on a LB or is he big mates with Bamford and we need someone to keep him company on the phyiso's bench.

I'm hoping we bring in a 9 and/or a 10 but I wouldn't be surprised if all we get is a statement telling us how hard they tried to get loads of players in but just couldn't get them to come!!
A bumble bee under the laws of physics shouldnt be able to fly, but it does because no one has told it that it can't

Well Ratscoot I agreed with most of what you posted but found the snide reference to Bamford and his recent fitness problems petty and unnecessary. In your mind are players culpable when they are unable to train and play the sport they love whilst accepting lucrative wages or can you acknowlege that they are indeed significantly frustrated and sometimes embarrassed by being financially fortunate but unable to pursue their career ambitions ?

With only a handful of posts to date I don’t yet know your style, I agree with what you have to say about player culpability (I find it incredulous that any professional worthy of the name would intentionally allow themselves to be injured), but I also have to sit alongside Ratscoot’s humour and pat him on the back. If we can’t laugh at a ridiculous situation then what can we do?
The one word I take with a pinch of salt in your post is ‘recent’. I presume you use that in the same context as a fictitious statement about the Ice Age being ‘not too long ago’?

There are so many on here decrying Bamford for his injury record. Can I just remind them of a certain Eddie Gray, who was injured for quite a lot of his later career with Leeds. Even Cloughy remarked that if he were a racehorse, he would have been put down by now. Eddie was looked after and encouraged by Jimmy Armfield to not give up on his career, and indeed he played (and illuminated the field) many more times for Leeds. Enough on Bamford please.

Well you made me laugh and I never advocate Schadenfreude where some enjoy Bamford's misfortune nor your oneupmanship over my use of the word recent. Do you recall the Patrick hattrick for Middlesborough against us or was that in a long ago age ?

Not a prolific goalscorer of late.

6 goals in 50 appearnces over the last two seasons, albeit playing in the PL at the time.

Previously, 18 in 40 whilst on loan periods at Preston & Middlesbro' in the championship.

Your generosity of spirit needs refreshing but if you don't like my question about the difference between a coconut and a Scotsman - the answer is you can get a drink out of a coconut take comfort in the thought some of us find it funny.

Please put this debate on hold with Orange until I pop out and buy some popcorn. I am enjoying the content immensely.

I do love some well considered badinage.

The Targett transfer rumour is an interesting one. If it has any credence, it must have been a loan enquiry….surely ?

Far more priority positions to throw what available money at.

There are gossip Links on BBC sport concerning a 19 year old RedBull winger.

And that’s where the trouble started! We should have left him where he was.

Ps I know you’re new, when you reply to a specific post press on the quotes symbol on the old post, it will come straight to the poster. I look forward to many interactions with you in the future.
Pps. I don’t think you’re the type, and you’ve given no indication, please don’t take every disagreement response personally . Most days I find an opportunity to disagree with myself
