Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 18th September) Leeds may be forced to sell midfield dynamo in January

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 18th September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds may be forced to sell midfield dynamo in January

Leeds could face a complicated financial dilemma heading into the winter transfer window, with reports suggesting Japanese international Ao Tanaka could be sold to navigate stringent Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. Despite the club possessing ample funds, FFP constraints mean Leeds must generate capital through player sales to acquire a much-needed creative influence for Daniel Farke's squad.

Robbie Evans has already made it clear that Leeds pusged FFP to the limit this summer and would have had to make player sales if they were to bring in that difference maker. With Leeds lacking that cutting edge so far this season, a creative playmaker could still be very much top of Daniel Farke's list come January. But if Leeds are to do business when the window opens, someone will likely have to make way.

Tanaka, a pivotal 27-year-old midfielder, recently revealed his future at Elland Road was on a knife-edge over the summer, with a departure almost certain had Leeds failed to secure promotion. His impressive performances quickly established him as a key figure under Farke, alerting several clubs to his availability.

Sources close to the club confirm that Celtic maintained a strong interest, having pursued the midfielder even before his move to Leeds in 2024. Premier League outfits Bournemouth and Brentford also kept tabs on the Japanese international, ready to make a move, had the Whites not won promotion.

Now, despite his undeniable impact, Tanaka's future is once again a topic of intense speculation. A winter sale of the sought-after midfielder, while a tough decision given his on-field contributions, might be a necessary strategic move to ensure FFP compliance and facilitate the acquisition of a creative spark essential for the team's ambitions.

Will a point at Wolves be enough

As Leeds United prepare for their weekend trip to Molineux, the fixture presents a fascinating dilemma. On paper, it’s a golden opportunity. They face a disjointed Wolves side, pointless after four games and looking utterly toothless without their talismanic striker, Yorgen Strand Larssen. With Vítor Pereira's team struggling to create, managing just 11 shots on target all season, the home side appears there for the taking.

However, Leeds' own attacking frailties, which have yielded only one goal from a league-low eight shots on target, suggest a low-scoring affair is almost inevitable. The game reeks of a gritty stalemate. So, would a draw be enough? After leaving Craven Cottage empty-handed last weekend, securing a point on the road would stop the rot and reward a defence and midfield that have looked accomplished, the mauling at Arsenal aside.

Yet, failing to beat the league’s most out-of-form team would feel like a significant missed opportunity. For a club with aspirations of pushing forward, these are the fixtures that must be converted into three points. While a draw wouldn't be a disaster, it would raise questions about where exactly their points will come from this season.

This match is less about the single point and more about the statement of intent; settling for a draw against a wounded opponent is not be the sign of progress the fans will be demanding. On paper at least, Leeds won't have an easier opportunity for 3 points on the road this season.

A dynamo’s like… er, a magic box with spinning bits and wires what makes candles glow without fire, right?

Needs sticky stones what are called them there magnets and twirling bits of copper wire to make that sparky stuff.

Makes no sense to call someone a dynamo, cos it defies the laws of physics it does, right? Flesh and blood they are, not some tin suit of armour in human form what runs on sparky stuff, right?

Callin’ a footballer a “midfield dynamo” is daft as turnip soup... not scientifical innit. Should just call ‘im a “midfield turnip,” ‘cos it’s less confusin’!

Metaphorical madness, right?

In theory we could spend as much as we like in January and then balance the books after the season has finished with a fire sale before the 30th June FFP cut off point.

Or we could do like Forest did and say whoops we missed the deadline so please let us off lightly.

Yes, how can we need to sell a player due to FFP, when at the same time we were chasing Paixão and/or Muniz. A combined outlay of probably more than £80 million? Just doesn't add up...literally!

We've had some decent youngsters, but instead of sending them out to grow, we prefer to let them rot on the bench, and then have to give them away.

After one season away, Cresswell (as predicted my me) is now worth £20m.

Can anyone explain to me why Sam Chambers has not been sent out on loan?????

Leeds being Leeds would get dealt with far more seriously than Forest.

Well that and Tanaka won't bring in much. We bought him cheap and no reason to think that's increased much? 10M? maybe. That's not enough profit to help with PSR and add a playet or two

Er.... so Leeds United would have had to make squad changes if the promotion effort had failed............
Tanaka would have been put up for sale.............. Where is the story there?

The whole blinking squad would have been available - for a price as is the case always. Could have, should have, would have etc. Look at last years squad and get a pencil and then put a price on the head of each player. Ain't really going to raise much.

The saving grace, if there is one, is that this last transfer window we didn't have clubs come sniffing around our playing squad. Helped us to build on which was well needed for the Premiership.

I suppose Tanaka, Piroe, Amps and Jmes would have been near the top of the list.

Perhaps better just to point out that during any transfer window all or any of our players are available subject to an acceptable offer being received.

Just as we seen before with;

Phillips
Raphinha
Summerville
Gray
Rutter

no one is off limits.

Or if they did we rebuffed them quickly and as such rumours never started to circulate.

So you seem to have some free time on your hands so.

Perhaps a better place would be for you to start by explaining why he should go out on loan?

Also when you are at it point to one game Creswell played well for Leeds.

And while you are there, perhaps you could help us, the great uninformed, enlighten us on why you think every decision the club makes is an error?

Don't knock the turnip soup, it has been scientifically proven the eating turnip soup twice daily can stop climate change.

Ed Miliband's net zero plan is heavily based on the consumption of turnips.

Unfortunately this is a upper management problem. Players that are already identified to be sold or moved on have not been completed.
Meanwhile these players continue to draw a wages from the club adding to the burden of overall cost. A player like Tanaka imo has the necessary skill level to play a part in the Premier League for Leeds United, while others imo like Harrison, Meslier, Byram and other fringe players need to be sold to balance the books. FFP is not rocket science and the upper management are fully aware. DF is already dealing with squad problems so its not up to him to sort this out. Once again its ridiculous to read that Tanaka may be sold when there is so much dead wood around the club. Are the 49's keeping a close eye on all of this? I really hope so!!!
