Once again its ridiculous to read that Tanaka may be sold when there is so much dead wood around the club. Are the 49's keeping a close eye on all of this? I really hope so!!!

You do realise that Byram was out of contract during the summer and we gave him a new contract. As a squad we need fringe players and Byram was a relatively cheap option to give us back-up for both full back positions. He is also a quality player who's only problem is that he cann't be relied upon to play 2 or 3 games in a shirt period due to his injury issues. As back-up though he is a great player to have as he is relatively cheap, pretty decent ability wise and isn't likely to throw the toys out of the pram even if he doesn't make a single appearance.Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 1:15 pm Unfortunately this is a upper management problem. Yes I realise but I don't agree with you on this occasion because a player that is at best average is not a premier league player. The new extension to his contract is absurd imo while we struggle to get players in the door that can compete at a higher level. Byram maybe a lower drain on resources but he has a terrible injury record and therefore not really someone that should be a part of the first team imo.weasel wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 3:06 pm You do realise that Byram was out of contract during the summer and we gave him a new contract. The Debate is about selling players to meet FFP and tough choices need to be made.

Thats why we upper management to do this for us and get the revenue in to invest in new players.andrewjohnsmith wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 2:44 pm It's easier to get deals and money for good players than it is for dead wood
As its dead wood we are talking about maybe a fire sale would be appropriate

Byram is proven at Prem level with West Ham and Norwich and but for injuries I think he would have played for England at right back. Although we may disagree on his ability the alternative is what? The only scenario I could see apart from re-signing Byram would be to pay money to have a player to be likely 3rd choice full back. That then means less to spend elsewhere. He was available whenever he was needed last season.Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 3:40 pm Yes I realise but I don't agree with you on this occasion because a player that is at best average is not a premier league player. I can only presume there was little interest in Harrison and Aaronsen. With Harrison a club could have come in to buy him over the last 2 years but nobody did. Am guessing there wasn't a queue forming or if they were then they were likely offering less than it would cost us to buy a replacement. Aaronsen likely any bids we got would have been lower than his FPP value which then, because of how retarded the FPP rules are, means we would have less to spend despite receiving a transfer fee.
Ideally yes we'd have sold those 2 for decent money, and Meslier too, and had more funds to spend.

its NOT the 49's it is down to our chairman who does not really know/understand the english football market and spends half his time in Scotland. We also have a new MD who by reading his comments since he got the job is out of his depth. And fancy promoting junior people in our recruitment department to be the head, the chairman has made a number of clearly incorrect decisionsMusicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 1:15 pm Unfortunately this is a upper management problem. Having players like Byram is a Godsend to any squad. Multi positional.Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 3:40 pm Yes I realise but I don't agree with you on this occasion because a player that is at best average is not a premier league player. Happy to fill in when needed, low wages, played 36 games last time and we won't have to give him a big payoff when he is done.
Home grown too.
So selling / ending his contract for PSR reasons makes no sense.

Look around the big clubs are run by Arabs and Cowboys now, they understand business, some are doing pretty well despite their lack of supposed understanding of the game.
A bit like the oversee PL managers...... All sorts on that list.

Byram as England first choice right back, not even at his peak without injuries would he be anywhere near good enough. Anyway we will have to agree to disagree on this one. Lets hope we can unload a few players to bring some money in, for the sake of your toys staying in your pram, Byram can stay..weasel wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 4:04 pm Byram is proven at Prem level with West Ham and Norwich and but for injuries I think he would have played for England at right back. Byram in his first season was unbelievable, I remember watching him at ER have Bale in his back pocket - when Bale was unbelievably good. The injuries blighted him, probably a knock on effect of Warnock overplaying him as a youngster. Without those injuries I have zero doubt he would have gone on to play for England. Yes he never got back to those levels as the injuries took their toll but without those.....Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 6:56 pm Byram as England first choice right back, not even at his peak without injuries would he be anywhere near good enough. So instead of Byram as back up behind James Justin you'd have done what - A) Got a better player for free, B) Spent money on a better player to be back up behind Justin or C) risked us just having Justin as the back up?Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 6:59 pm Yes I agree with most of what you say but the bottom line, He is just not good enough for the Premier League imo.

So we go back to my original point, players need to sold in order to progress and stay in the league. Yes I would have got a quality RB in the door, not a utility player or someone to fill in a decent signing that has the necessary quality. You can't get by in the Premier League with bit players. Good example of quality RB that went out on loan to Rangers Max Aarons... No contest between to the two.

I think you'd agree players don't get better with age, unfortunate that Sam had a injury hit seasons at the most important stage of his
career. As for England, I think he was called up for the under 21 once and withdrew....injuried...

Well they got us up, seem to have a multi faceted strategy and are a hell of a lot connected than we are.
But it's easy not backing the management because we can always remind ourselves how right we were if it goes bad.
I often wonder where supporting a club begins and ends. Is it just the time on the pitch or greater?
