Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 3rd November) - South Coast Embarrassment for Leeds

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 3rd November, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

South Coast Embarrassment for Leeds

Leeds United’s trip to the south coast ended in embarrassment as Brighton & Hove Albion, despite a mounting injury list, produced a dominant display to sweep aside a disjointed and lifeless Leeds outfit. The Whites’ dismal record at the Amex extends back to 2009, and on the evidence of this performance, that barren run looks set to continue for some time. Brighton entered the contest on the back of two consecutive defeats and with little recovery time after their midweek exertions, yet they showed far greater energy, precision, and purpose throughout. Leeds, by contrast, looked bereft of ideas and confidence, with their decision-making and defensive organisation again under scrutiny.

The tone was set early when Danny Welbeck, continuing a rich vein of form, opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The veteran striker finished off a slick move involving Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer, volleying home from close range for his sixth goal of the season and fourth in three league outings. It was a goal built on tempo and understanding, qualities Leeds never came close to matching. A rare moment of opportunity for the visitors arrived just before half-time when Sean Longstaff’s shot was blocked inside the box by Jan Paul van Hecke, but that fleeting threat summed up their insipid attacking efforts. Even their approach to set pieces baffled commentators and fans alike, as a first-half free kick in a dangerous area was inexplicably played backwards rather than swung into the box.

Any hopes of a Leeds recovery after the interval were swiftly extinguished by a quickfire double from Diego Gómez. Making his return to the starting lineup, the Paraguayan midfielder tapped home on 64 minutes after excellent wing play from Minteh, then drove in his second six minutes later from a Georginio Rutter cutback. Those strikes sealed Brighton’s fourth win in ten games and their first clean sheet of the campaign. In the pouring rain, Fabian Hürzeler’s side looked sharp and confident, while Leeds looked disinterested for much of the game.

Farke Out of His Depth

Saturday’s dismal showing against Brighton exposed, once again, that Daniel Farke is completely out of his depth in the Premier League. Leeds United looked tactically lost, uninspired, and devoid of any coherent plan. The only thing keeping Farke in his job appears to be the hollow comfort of a recent victory over an abysmal West Ham side; a result that now looks more like a lucky break than a sign of progress.

Farke’s failures are piling up. The summer transfer window was admittedly restricted by limited backing from the 49ers, but even within those constraints, the manager has done little to prove his worth. His poor decision-making, baffling substitutions, and stubborn refusal to adapt his tactics have all cost Leeds valuable points. The absence of a set-piece coach, in particular, is inexcusable. Week after week, Leeds squander opportunities from dead-ball situations and concede soft goals due to a lack of organisation, yet Farke persists with the same ineffective approach.

Leeds United cannot afford to drift aimlessly under a manager who lacks the ability to get the most of his players. They look demoralised and confused, playing without purpose or confidence. That responsibility lies with the man in charge. Sentimentality or patience cannot disguise the truth; Daniel Farke has failed to lift this team from mediocrity and his football philosophy is not suited to the demands of the Premier League.

Leeds need a head coach who can galvanise the squad, instill belief, and shape a system that plays to the team’s strengths. Daniel Farke is not that man. Every additional week under his leadership drags the club closer to disaster. How much longer can Leeds afford to sink before admitting Farke is out of his depth?

I was a supported of Farke and thought that after achieving promotion he should be given a chance in the Premier League. After watching the abysmal display at Brighton and how he surrendered second half possession to a poor West Hams side I feel that he should be replaced - the problem being that who is out there looking for a job who would be an improvement ?

Poor or lacking confidence?
They just walloped Newcastle.
Turning point of the game was the marginal offside goal. If its on we were definitely in the s**t.
I wouldn’t trust us to get a mid season managerial appointment right so hopefully it isn’t necessary however you can see it happening after the next 4 or 5 games.

Didn't see the match on Saturday so can't really comment other than it was an entirely predictable outcome and therefore not the sort of game to be judging the future of our club on.

Let's see what we get from the next 2 games.

I think it'll happen before then unless things improve the next couple of games.

I agree with Tom the Cat. I was very supportive. Now having doubts as there didn't seem to be any element of trying to win that game. I know people don't want to hark back to Marcelo days - BUT, he never set up a team to not try and win. He changed things when they needed changing, he was always trying to win. Never just contain and hope.

November is the time for change (as it was when we were debating Marsh who was only saved for 3 months by a fluky Liverpool win).
We win at Forest - is everything ok?
We lose at Forest - does that start the scramble?

I think any decision needs to be based on broader trends...and for that we are seeing a trend emerge. We don't look like scoring even if we played for hours. Stats like possession are useless if we can't score (burnley beat us with 35% possession).

Either way - decisive action is required. If we don't see a change in trend in November then we need to change. The next two matches are the bell weather for me - both have the potential for getting points.

Then Man City - let's give it a go and get them fighting. Even if we lose, it's the style of loss that is important.

Gareth Southgate? Or is that more Farke style (too cautious) - he lives locally.

Wider question...what would a new manager change? We are not laden with creative attacking 1st team players - which is a squad issue.
Farke won't seem to trust the youngsters, but would a new manager do that?

I'm not Farke's biggest fan, (hate his in game management and, usually, team selection,) but I think he's the best shot at staying up then if that fails then getting us back up again. At which point you say thanks but we'll get another manager.

Unless there's a Frank/Iraola type out there who'd want to come... That's probably Knutsen atm or if we're looking for a FA then maybe Motta the ex Juve manager or Terzic, ex Dortmund

Xavi is also available but I doubt he'd look in our direction

Sack Farke? Are you crazy?

We're going to need him to get out of the Championship next year.

Terzic's Dortmund side was very young, he'd likely bring through youngsters.. A new manager might change attitude, I think Farke's football tries to be pragmatic, dour and safe. He prefers a journeyman to an exciting talent.

but yes, one feels the damage was done in the summer. A summer poll here thought we could stay up but needed a very good window. We didn't get it.

Out of his depth..

That old trope is back in fashion this week.

Personally I think a lot of the online Leeds community are out of their depth in the Premier League, having no real sense of how it works or how hard it is to survive in it.
Lose a match and its burn everything.

I recall Leeds at Brighton under his management and we were even worse than Saturday.

Disappointing that so many of our fan base it seems want Farke out because unless the 49ers have a huge name to come in I'm interested to know who on earth could do a better job with some of our players. The reality is we only have 3 or 4 PL quality players, lower PL quality players at that. It was always going to be a struggle to finish 17th and nothing has or will change that in the near future. Why the mass panic when we put in a s**t show against Brighton and Arsenal away? There will be a good half-dozen plus more of those types of performances this season regardless of who the manager is. We are a little fish in a big pond.

I'd say there are at 15 teams in this league who are MUCH better than us and we will be the underdogs in every game against them, home or away and that is a result of us starting the season with a lack of quality and a somewhat poor transfer window in the summer with only GG, Okafor and Stach looking like good bits of business when the reality is every signing needed to be on the money from the get go and it wasn't the case.

When we got relegated a few years ago I remember thinking how I couldn't care less if I ever saw the likes of Aaronson, James and Harrison in a Leeds shirt ever again yet here they are in the team on a regular basis a couple of years on doing exactly the same as they did for us the first time. Nothing. Do we ever learn?

No way is this all on Farke but he will be the fall guy, no doubt about it. We had literally a dozen or so of those pastings under Bielsa in the end and until we get to that stage again I'd be prepared to stick rather than twist for the foreseeable future because I just can't see anything changing with the players we have right now. I'm still very much in the "careful what you wish for" mindset.

I didn't know that. Southgate is actually equident (my word of the day) between TA, and ER (around 40 mins)
