Leeds need a great summer 2026 with outgoings and incoming players

Re: January transfers and squad discussion
You want to play our best player out of position and spend money on another to replace him..
Gotcha.

Re: January transfers and squad discussion
I think the squad is too big and we have players like Meslier, Byram, Bournaw, Gruev and Piroe who have hardly played all season.
Most other premier league clubs largely fill their bench with young players and give them some experience.
I'd prefer we developed this aspect of the squad rather than loaning all the young players out as soon as possible.
Why do we not have any good young players pushing for first team involvement?

Its a fair question, I think currently the club is averse to the risk.marie67 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 2:03 pm I think the squad is too big and we have players like Meslier, Byram, Bournaw, Gruev and Piroe who have hardly played all season.

Promotion then survival have meant the squad is filled more with experience.
Hopefully in a couple of seasons if we are established we can think more towards player development.

Stop bringing up the truth Squirrelthe squirrel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 06, 2026 6:54 pm We conceded 8 in the last 7 games, if you consider we've played Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool twice, that isn't that bad. Its only one more than Arsenal in their last 7 games.

Tend to agree, this season wasn’t the time to experiment.
Imperative we stay up, particularly with the ground improvements on the horizon.

It is not just that, besides Gray, I am not sure there are many players coming through from the 18’s or 21’s that would add to the bench. Most clubs add youth due to injuries.Barlow Boy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 3:31 pm Tend to agree, this season wasn’t the time to experiment.

Arsenal had a lot of youth players on the bench earlier in the season, amongst which were coveted talent. Simply because of injuries. Has anyone seen that kid who came on against us since, or Nwaneri. Since they got 1st team players from injury their bench has rarely seen a youngster.
The best games to blood youth are cup and European games against minnows initially to see how they cope, rather than throwing them into high pressure league games.

Re: January transfers and squad discussion
Yes thats true. We have to be risk averse right now because we are still paying for massive losses from the 23/24 season (61million), meaning we have limited ability to buy in-form players from the 3 or 4 big leagues. We were a Championship team paying PL wages.
The squad has theefore being a bit unbalanced and we are still digging out of that hole.
The teams that have youth on their bench have had stability to grow those players over a number of seasons, while at the same time being able to spend on a few key players in key positions - like Brighton buying Rutter.
With benefit of hindsight, our recruitment pre- season actually wasnt so bad. All those brought in have delivered (Perri still a question mark maybe
We can only focus on loan players in this window - unless we sell as well.
On the flip side of the coin, Arsenal's bench in their game against Liverpool had price tags totalling 263million pounds

Interesting that Josh Sargeant made himself unavailable for Norwich’s FA tie. It suggest he wants out and potentially has something in the fire. I wonder given his history with DF …….??

Saw that earlier and did wonder if he would be linked with us. Do think he could ptentially be a good foil to play off DCL with his pace but not for that sort of fee. Not surprised it is an MLS side willing to pay that much as he would be a marquee signing with him being a yankee (albeit strange that it is a Canadian team rather than an American).

Re: January transfers and squad discussion
After the Derby game we saw a glimpse of what is available to us if our main starting eleven pick up injuries or suspensions. Some starters were included but its absolutely frightening that Harrison is our back up for Gudmunsson. Top of the list backup purchase imo,
Okafor is not showing the levels needed for the Premier League, not yet anyway....How important the January window is for Leeds, we can't take a step back and do nothing. Talk of Largie maybe coming back but is he good enough?

You need to put back ups into context. Unless we have a significant injury crisis, the squad players filling in will not be surrounded with other back ups who haven’t played many mins.Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 1:53 am After the Derby game we saw a glimpse of what is available to us if our main starting eleven pick up injuries or suspensions. The Derby game is not an outlier for how back players will necessarily perform if they need to play on a regular basis. We have decent depth in the squad and they are all experienced players.

Callum Wilson would be a better shout than Sargeant IMOweasel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 06, 2026 3:55 pm Seems madness to me that West Ham are seemingly pushing him out (supposedly negotiating a deal with him to end his contract early). For me he'd be starting for them, if fit, and is proven at this level whereas the 2 new signings may do brilliantly but equally may flop. Callum WIlson has always looked a decent striker, not top class but certainly decent enough at this level. Like you I would be tempted to see if we could get him as could see him playing off DCL.

Hoping we get a couple of good players in January, then assuming we stay up we do need to have a very big clear out in the summer.Musicman1965 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 1:53 am After the Derby game we saw a glimpse of what is available to us if our main starting eleven pick up injuries or suspensions. Not sure why we would want to sign a player who was released by a team below us ?Tom the Cat wrote: ↑Mon Jan 12, 2026 12:39 pm Callum Wilson would be a better shout than Sargeant IMO
Especially as they have seen him in training etc over the last few months and have all the data.
Regarding Sargent then yes I'd take him but only at a knock down price and that won't happen.
