Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 23rd March) Leeds and Brentford cancel each other out in goalless draw

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 23rd March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds and Brentford cancel each other out in goalless draw

Leeds United nudged themselves four points clear of the Premier League’s drop zone after a drab 0‑0 draw with Brentford at Elland Road. Both teams spent the 90 minutes cancelling each other out, with the forwards on either end looking completely ineffective against well‑organised defences. The only genuine chances came from distance, Lukas Nmecha’s curling effort from outside the box forced Caoimhin Kelleher into a comfortable save, while after the break Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka tried their luck from similar ranges only to be denied again by the Brentford shot-stopper.

Brentford entered the match with a chance to climb to within a point of the top‑five, especially after Chelsea and Liverpool stumbled earlier on Saturday. Instead, they were forced to settle for a point that lifted them back up to seventh, while Leeds remain 15th. The Bees’ talisman, Igor Thiago, who is chasing his 20th league goal, was largely silenced by a disciplined Leeds back line and could do little more than blast a few shots wide.

The most frantic spell came in stoppage time when Leeds piled on a series of corners, desperate for a breakthrough that never materialised. In spite of winning possession seven times in the final third, their second‑best tally of the season, the Whites failed to produce a clear‑cut chance. Dominic Calvert‑Lewin, freshly recalled to the England squad, was virtually anonymous; he never received any kind of service to showcase his quality, though the same could be said about Thiago.

Not out of the Woods yet

Leeds have now gone six top flight games games without a win, a drought that stretches back to 6th February where a rampant Whites side demolished Nottingham Forest 3-1. It isn’t for lack of effort. Leeds have hounded and pressed, but created very little -that missing “spark” in the final third is becoming a glaring problem. The Whites now find themselves 19th in the form guide (over six games) with four points; only Spurs have a worse record.

In a league where the bottom six are separated by only a handful of points, Leeds will need to start finding the back of the net sooner rather than later, if they are to finish outside of the bottom three. They have not scored in four games (since Stach's wonderous free-kick), and have yet to play four of the five teams below them in the table (Burnley, Spurs, Wolves and West Ham). They must also navigate away trips to Old Trafford and the Vitality Stadium as well as a home tie against bogie side Brighton.

Two Brentford players left bloodied after assault

Two Brentford first‑team players found themselves bloodied on a Richmond street in the early hours of Sunday, after rushing to aid a man who appeared to be the victim of a racially motivated assault. The episode unfolded at around 02:00 hrs on Queen’s Road, Richmond, just as the squad were returning from their 0‑0 draw with Leeds. While neither player required medical treatment and were described as “completely healthy", eyewitnesses reported fresh cuts and bruises on their faces, a stark reminder that even well‑trained athletes are not immune to street‑level violence.

Metropolitan Police confirmed they attended the scene, engaged with the alleged victim and opened an investigation; no arrests have been made yet. The incident comes as Brentford sit seventh in the Premier League, two points shy of Chelsea and level with Everton, keeping European qualification within reach. With the international break looming, the club’s travel arrangements from Elland Road were left to the players themselves, underscoring how quickly a routine post‑match routine can turn into an unexpected act of civilian bravery.

Bijol a colossus at the back, didn't give Thiago a sniff.

Far too many players not involved enough in the game & the error count was a tad high.

Didn't have much control of midfield, he can't play DCL, Nmecha and Aaronson as a front three again. We needed another man in midfield or width with players who have the ability to get the ball into the box.

Agree the front three was more or less non-existent until Tanaka & James gave us the extra man in midfield & the width.

DCL & Nmecha were starved of service in the first-half, it wasn't great, but we did look like the only team who wanted to win the game after we made the subs.

Defensively, we were excellent.

Very true. We worked extremely hard to win the ball in midfield, only to give it straight away

Nmecha just doesn't get involved enough to warrant his place in the starting line up, despite his goals

It’s pretty clear for opposition managers that if you want a point or maybe to sneak a win from ER you just need to match our formation. It crowds us out, hopelessly outnumbered any where in the final third - when central defenders get forward it helps but perhaps rightly Farke was too worried about counter attacks to commit them forward.

Nmecha I’m afraid is just not very good with the ball, he’s fine when gifted chances but in general play he is ineffective , if Farke can commit another body upfront then perhaps he needs to try Gnonto there.

Vital point gained on Saturday which will keep us out of the relegation zone regardless of what happens at Old Trafford and after which our fixtures are more favourable for the remaining 6 games.

Like the week before against Crystal Palace these hard fought draws are what will keep us up.

By whose metric do we measure how we are achieving our goals. If we take Daniel Farke"s aim of getting one point per game, then we are on track, and have not deviated from it.

The form stats can pi$$off.

The money men will judge DF at the end of the season, survival or relegation simple as that. A little bit early in our current battle to stay in the Premier League to worry about attractive football me thinks.

Okafor and Nmecha have very dodgy first touches a lot of the time, I think the latter basically does his best work in the box and hasn't really formed a partnership with DCL... I don't like that pairing much..

The ultimate goal and the one given to Farke by the board is premier league survival. Farke has set himself the 38 point target believing it will be enough. At this point I’m not sure the board will agree with him but at the same time the current position will be in line with their expectations for the season so far.

I thought that our defence was good limiting Brentford to a few half chances but we have little or no "zip" in attack. I cannot see why DF plays Okafor rather than Gnonto who can beat a man and delivers good crosses. I was watching the match on TV when Mrs TtheC came into the room (she is not a football fan) - she watched the match for about five minutes before saying "why do we keep kicking the ball to their players" !!!

Stuck out wide though, and with Brendy giving the ball away in midfield constantly very little to link the defence with attack.

I thought Brenden had one of his worst games this season, went down too easily & the ref was having none of it.

Aaronson needs a rest, very ineffective last few games. Key in our good run but maybe burned out and targetted now as a weak link

Bar Darlow, Struijk, Bijol & Rodon, everyone has been ineffective one way or another these last few games.

This 3 week break from the PL is ludicrous at this point in the season if you ask me. Sure it will work better for some clubs than others but what the hell, and no game to watch at Easter if your team is out the cup. Should have this sodding break in February when no-one wants to go out in the cold anyway.

System failure... and I'd add stach who's been sublime. Darlow has been sound but not really had anything to do thanks to our back 6 plus Ampadu and Gruev recently.

We're good up to Stach, after that we look weak with Okafor, DCL, Aaronson, Nmecha rotating in and out of our "forward" line
