Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 8th April) Leeds slap £12m asking price on Tanaka'

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 8th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds slap £12m asking price on Tanaka's services

Leeds United have reportedly slapped a £10m–£12m valuation on AO Tanaka, signalling that the Japanese international’s time at Elland Road might be nearing its end. He was an absolute pillar of the promotion-winning side last term, yet he’s found himself relegated to a bit-part role in the Premier League. While 21 appearances looks decent on paper, the reality is a mere 765 minutes of football and only seven starts, hardly the workload a player in his prime expects. With German outfits like Freiburg, Hannover 96, and Union Berlin circling, a return to the Bundesliga seems like the most logical exit strategy for a player who clearly needs a fresh start to rediscover his rhythm.

However, with Anton Stach sidelined with ankle ligament damage, the door has swung wide open for Tanaka to reclaim his spot. This period serves as a dual-purpose "shop window", either he proves to Daniel Farke that he’s indispensable for the survival scrap, or he puts on a clinic for the scouts watching from Germany to justify that £12m price tag. Beyond the tactics and the stats, losing Tanaka would be a blow to the club's culture. He’s become a cult hero not just for his play, but for being a genuine class act. His small but poignant gesture at the London Stadium, stopping to pick up a fallen flower on the memorial wreaths for Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight spoke volumes about his character. Whether he stays or goes, Leeds will be losing a player who truly understands the weight of the shirt.

Chelsea given extra 24 hours preparation for Wembley showdown with Leeds

The FA Cup semi-finals always throw a wrench into the Premier League schedule, and this year’s reshuffle for the weekend of April 25th has handed Chelsea a big advantage. Because of the cup fixtures, Leeds’ trip to the Vitality Stadium has been pushed to Wednesday, April 22nd, while Chelsea’s visit to Brighton was slotted in for the Tuesday night.

On the surface, 24 hours might not seem like a game-changer, but in the high-intensity environment of the season’s final stretch, it’s a massive analytical advantage. That extra day of recovery allows Chelsea to get an extra session of tactical preparation and, more importantly, vital physical rest for their squad. While Leeds already have a much smaller squad and have to travel further, the Blues get a little more breathing room to prepare. In a league where marginal gains often decide the result, Chelsea are definitely walking into the game with the scales tipped slightly in their favour.

Reds heading to Dublin training camp to sharpen up ahead of Leeds clash

With the 'War of the Roses' clash not kicking off (literally) until Monday evening, Manchester United are heading out on a four-day training camp near Dublin to sharpen up. Having been knocked out of the FA Cup and without European distractions, the Red Devils are using the Irish getaway to ramp up their fitness intensity and avoid any late-season sluggishness. In stark contrast, Leeds arrive with plenty of momentum but perhaps a bit more fatigue; they enjoyed a historic penalty-shootout win over West Ham last Sunday to reach their first FA Cup semi-final in 39 years.

The form guide heavily favours the red side of Manchester. United sit third in the Premier League and are currently the league's form heavyweights, bagging an impressive 23 points from their last ten outings compared to Leeds’ modest 11. While Michael Carrick's men have lost just once in their last 14 top-flight games, Leeds have proven they can be a stubborn thorn in their rival's side, as evidenced by the hard-fought 1-1 draw at Elland Road back in January.

CHELSEA players will have one more day to go clubbing
and Manure will take advantage of being in Dublin to down as much Guinness as they can manage.

It is a win win situation for us, it is much easier to play hung over teams.

I really rate Tanaka so it would be a real shame if we sold him. I hope he takes the opportunity to really shine now Stach is out but in my opinion we generally always look a better side with Tanaka in it. We are talking about an experienced international here and I just don't think we have seen his maximum worth this season but that's more on Farke than Tanaka really. A vital contribution from here on and a good w/c with Japan should rule out any talk of a transfer, especially for a silly fee like 12m.

Besides, nobody ghosts in at the back post like Tanaka. He has weapons in his armour and yes I think the badge on his shirt means more to him than some folk realise.

£10m to £12m for Tanaka. If true someone has been at the sherry! Minimum £25m if anyone is seriously interested I'd have thought

Is he for sale? Are Leeds building a squad or not? A case of wait and see I guess

Agreed. We should be squad building. I’m see no real reason to sell tanaka as he will only improve over the next couple of years.

Man U in Dublin. Build form and fitness. This sounds like a banana skin moment. Battle hardened team beat the one with weeks off.

It would be a win win for everyone if Tanaka played a stormer if Stach isn't available and proves that he has got up to speed with the Premier League and is worthy of a starting role going forward . To my mind he hasn't done that to date which was disappointing as I do rate him as a player and he does give additional scoring option from midfield . Even in the Championship there were occasions when his defensive positioning was a bit wayward and there was a weakness in the tackle which has been accentuated this season . If he gets a couple of starts and allays those concerns then I would think he should be part of the squad building process . If he doesn't seize this opportunity then the head says take your profit and use the multiplier effect to strengthen squad options.

12M? Wow, is that how little we think of him. That's less than we paid for Longstaff ffs.. What's wrong with our board etc?

12M is gong to be very cheap for someone.

This is the first season for Tanaka in the Premiership and it has been a steep learning curve. He is a reserved kind of guy and he has picked it up very well. When he has had the opportunity. His development is somewhat stunted as he really has not had a decent run of games.

Tanaka does not strike me as a player that is going to be banging on the Managers door demanding this and that and perhaps this is a trait that holds him back at times. I think he's looked good when he has been on the pitch and, considering he is learning, there have been times when he's made mistakes. It hasn't helped him much that he's being consistently played out of position.

He is a fine player and it would not be surprising to find a host of clubs interested in getting his services. Hope he is not ditched as it would be a big mistake

When you see the words That Leeds have slapped a transfer fee amount for a player, you'd expect something realistic. 12 Million is what you pay for championship players not Premier League quality. £20 Million plus is about right imo. Hope we don't sell him, we need players like Tanaka to bring a bit of quality to the midfield.

It's bad enough when the rest of the world refers to Scum as "United" and expect that we'll all know who that is.

Exactly, it really irritates me when people do that, I always correct whomever I'm talking to when the say United, Who? we are United and we're the real one I say half joking, or when they say you now who I mean, I'll reply with well no Ye/they are not even the first/oldest one and there's plenty of United's everywhere and I usually reel off a list of them, but what really annoys them is when you correct them and they do it again and again and you correct them everytime

I'm imagining that the £12m figure is something someone has picked out of the air and not a case of someone within Leeds United putting it out. Also, this figure is not something that the club can come out and confirm/deny is it? It's like that old question - have you stopped beating your wife; It's unanswerable
