Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 16th April) - Leeds set to bring in record revenues

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 16th April, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Future looks bright for the Whites

Finance expert Stefan Borson is predicting a massive future for the Whites, with revenues expected to smash club records and soar past the £200 million mark. Most of that cash, about £75 million to £85 million, is coming straight from those juicy Premier League broadcast rights, paired with some seriously sharpened commercial moves. It sounds like they’re swimming in it, but here's the catch: the club is also walking a bit of a financial tightrope.

Because Leeds spent two of the last three seasons in the Championship, they’re facing a much tighter leash on spending than the established "big boys." While most clubs get a £105 million loss ceiling under the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Leeds is capped at just £61 million. To make things trickier, they just shelled out around £20 million in promotion bonuses from last season. Borson calls this an "internal penalty" because, while it’s great for the players' pockets, it directly eats into the club’s wiggle room to sign new talent.

Borson’s big takeaway? Leeds needs to resist the urge to "gamble" it all on a massive wage bill right away. The real secret to success is just staying relevant, sticking in the Premier League for a few consecutive seasons to slowly build up their spending power. The cool thing is that even if the worst happens and they get relegated, they’re actually in a better spot than teams like West Ham. Their contracts are built with "relegation resilience," meaning wages drop automatically if they go down, protecting the club from a total financial meltdown.

Looking at the big picture, the 49ers Enterprises aren’t just trying to survive; they’re playing the long game. According to leaked documents, they’re eyeing a massive £1 billion valuation by 2030. With plans for stadium expansion and a projected £300 million investment in players over the next three years, it’s clear Leeds is trying to build a powerhouse. It’s a delicate balance of ambition and caution, but if they can navigate the PSR hurdles, the future at Elland Road is looking incredibly bright.

Must keep Okafor fit

After Noah Okafor’s stunning double secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on April 13th, the buzz around Leeds United was all about one man. Speaking after the game, James Justin didn't hold back, calling Okafor "electric" and insisting that keeping the forward fit is the "biggest thing" for the club’s survival hopes. Since returning from a hamstring injury just three weeks ago, Okafor has been a man on a mission, bagging three goal contributions in the same number of games, including that vital assist that helped sink West Ham in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The victory at Old Trafford, put a much-needed six-point cushion between themselves and Spurs, but Justin knows the job isn't finished yet. He described Okafor as the team's "X-Factor," noting that whether he’s starting or coming off the bench, his presence alone changes the game. With only six matches left on the calendar, the message from the dressing room is loud and clear: if they can keep Okafor on the pitch, they’ve got exactly what they need to get over the line and stay in the top flight.

Listen 'ere, right? Since that Todd Boehly and them Clearlake lot took over Chelsea, they've proper gone mental, ain't they? Over a billion quid splashed on new players since 2022, and somehow they're still wrigglin' through them Premier League PSR rules what only let you lose 105 million over three years.

But they ain't just spunkin' cash like normal clubs, oh no...These saucy bastards are proper cookin' the books, mate! First off, they're dishin' out these ridiculous long contracts, seven, eight, even ten-year deals to the likes of Mudryk, Caicedo and that lot.

Instead of amortisin' the transfer fee over five years like a normal club, they spread it out thin as bleedin' stork margarine. A hundred million player on an eight-year deal? Only costs 'em twelve-and-a-half million a year on the books. Genius, innit? Makes the annual loss look smaller so they can keep buyin' like there's no tomorrow.

Then there's the proper dodgy bit nsellin' stuff to themselves! They flogged a couple of hotels and a car park to one of their own sister companies, pulled in tens of millions in "profit". But the big one? They sold the women's team to another part of the same ownership group for up to two hundred million quid! Turned a ninety million loss into a hundred-and-twenty-eight million profit overnight.

Magic, ain't it? All on paper, of course. UEFA took one look and told 'em to do one, said it weren't proper arm's-length, not the proper cut of the cloth, but the Premier League let it slide... for now.

On top of that, they're stackin' up young lads with resale value, keepin' the book values low thanks to them long deals, then floggin' 'em on for pure profit when the time's right.

Homegrown ones especially, zero book value, full fee goes straight in the profit column. They're shiftin' payments, timin' sales, writin' off the flops... the whole bleedin' works.

Fair play, it's clever. Some reckon it's financial genius. Me? I call it classic creative accounting, but I wouldn't call it legal... until the rules get tightened up and it all comes crashin' down.

Cos while the books look rosy, the actual cash is still flyin' out the door like there's no tomorrow. If them players don't perform or the values drop, they're gonna be in right stook, the tea leaves that they are.

Proper load of old pony if you ask me, but that's modern Chelsea for ya, spend like a drunken sailor, but cook the numbers like a master chef. Cheeky bastards!

Just had a look on the "re-sale" website and you can get Chelski tickets for £150 but cheapest in Leeds end is £500! Maybe we could infiltrate the Chelski end? :duno:

Morning EB et all,

The Owners and background staff should be congratulated on bringing us back from the brink but at the same time getting us into and potentially surviving in the Prem, just hope they dont get too excited and start doing a Chelsea as the Prem wont be as kind to us as them.

Okafor and AO could just be the end of season bonus ee need to help push us across that line.

What are the odds you could stay in your seat ( when we score our 3rd ) ?

The owners took a risk by not splurging in January which seems to have paid off and will look even better when we confirm our place in the Prem for next season and leave us even stronger in the summer.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who feared the worst after losing Stach, James & Rodon for the Scum game but then we turn around and embarrass the stih out of them in their own backyard, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the rest of the season if Okafor, Tanaka, Gnonto etc can step up and take their chances.

Okafor is very important but it shouldn't be underestimated the significance of Gudmundsson on enabling him to make the impact that he did .It was clear against Man.U. that they had huge difficulty in coping with that combination and the Bogle/Aaronson duo on the other side and when that was working at it's best we created numerous opportunities . There has been plenty of negativity about Okafor all season but he's clearly a big game player so I would love to see him doing his stuff at Wembley .

Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died in a car crash aged just 48. It’s being reported that he drove through a level crossing with the barriers down and a train hit his car. Police now investigating. What a tragedy. RIP Alex.

The sad reality is that while Leeds United are expecting RECORD turnover somewhere in the neighborhood of £200 million, the top clubs in this division are raking in £550 million to £750 million in annual turnover. So being able to really compete in this division is going to be a process. The stadium upgrades are a key component to driving up revenue. With more private suites, advertising revenue, and 15,000 more seats to sell, I would expect a complete revamping of the pricing structure. I think the stadium could add another £100 million or more to Leeds turnover. Which would be a VERY large number!

With success comes at a price. The machine will start slow but will gain momentum over the seasons to bring Leeds into a different league of profit and loss. Hopefully it will remain affordable for fans young and old to carry on the love and heartbreak of Leeds United Football Club.

While I feel extremely sad for the loss of life for a professional footballer that has retired and left probably a wife and maybe children behind. I can only think why on earth would anyone try and cross and train crossing with the barriers down? Are they in such a hurry to risk their life for what? to gain about 10 minutes if they had waited for it to be safe. I mean the report can not be right! No one does this because they know how dangerous it is!!!

I would hope that with the expansion it allows for more corproate seats, supposedly brings in the big money, but without taking seats away from the 'proper' fans. The stadium expansion is definitely a huge part of the plans as I imagine would be raising the profile of the club around the world - likely a huge part of the attraction to buy Leeds was that we already have a global following and whilst it may have dwindled in recent years it is still likely that we have more fans in places like Sweden, Australia etc than the Brightons, Bournemouths etc. Get a successful product on the pitch and the pockets of fans around the world can really start to increase. It is like we have the infrastructure globally already in place.

The number of Scandinavian fans we meet on a match day is astounding considering they have the same issue with late announcements of fixture changes, travel and hotel costs etc that we have.

CAUTION: Tottenhams most recent registered turnover is £565m. Turnover therefore does not guarantee success.
It isn’t the size of the club that matters, it’s the size of the heart. Leeds already have heart, the important thing is that we keep it.

All this talk of more money coming in and stadium expansion is great, but it all depends on whether or not we stay up this season. We need to grow the club but can only do that by staying in the Premiership. Going up and down every season wont do that.
I will pay more attention to this sort of story if we do stay up, then we can start to dream a little bit more as we take the next step. Assuming we do stay up and the expansion does start to take shape its nailed on ticket prices will rise. Its going to mean a lot of fans will be unable to make a trip to a game. Unfortunate for those fans, but there will still be lots of others ready to jump in and buy the tickets. The make up of the Leeds support may well change, newer, younger fans with more money but the heart will still be there and i belive more importantly the stadium stays were it is and keeps that special atmosphere, which is a hugh plus.

Well, it's not. But you could say the same for the entire Daniel Levy era....

Leeds United, thankfully, don't have a Daniel Levy problem! 8-)
