Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 15th July) - Leeds secure statement signing in Tarik Muharemović

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 15th July, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

"Here we go!" – Leeds secure statement signing in Tarik Muharemović

The transfer window has officially reached a fever pitch at Elland Road, with renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming the news Leeds fans have been waiting for: "Here we go!" Leeds United have reached a full agreement with Sassuolo to sign highly-rated centre-back Tarik Muharemović in a package deal worth €40 million (£34.1 million). This marquee acquisition serves as a monumental statement of intent from 49ers Enterprises, signaling that the club's ambitions to move up the Premier League ladder. Muharemović arrives as a definitive upgrade at the heart of the defense, stepping in as a direct replacement for Pascal Struijk on the left side of the central pairing.

For Daniel Farke, who demands a naturally left-footed defender to maintain structural integrity during build-up play, the 23-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international is the perfect tactical fit. Standing at an imposing 6ft 4in, Muharemović brings an immediate increase in aerial dominance, physicality and controlled aggression to the Whites backline. Beyond his physical stature, his technical profile is elite; he possesses a penchant for progressive, long-range passing that will act as a launchpad for Farke’s possession-heavy system. Capable of seamlessly transitioning between a back-four and a back-three, his versatility offers Farke the tactical flexibility to adapt to any opponent. This signing is more than just about survival next season, it is a clear message to the rest of the top flight that Leeds United are building for a successful future.

Schmidt expected to complete Young Boys switch

Leeds United’s versatile defender Isaac Schmidt is nearing a permanent departure from Elland Road, with BSC Young Boys currently in pole position to secure his signature. After a competitive pursuit that saw Young Boys edge out fellow Swiss Super League side FC Basel, the two clubs are now finalizing the financial structure of a deal that is expected to facilitate a clean break for the 26-year-old. For Leeds, the move serves as an opportunity to further streamline their wage bill and move on a fringe player who has struggled under Daniel Farke’s tenure. The transition to Bern represents a vital turning point for Schmidt, who has found opportunities scarce since his £2.5 million arrival from FC St. Gallen in August 2024.

Despite a productive loan spell at SV Werder Bremen during the 2025/26 campaign, where he demonstrated his tactical flexibility across both defensive flanks, he failed to secure a permanent future in Germany. Now, Young Boys have identified Schmidt as the primary solution to their defensive requirements, particularly with the looming departure of Lewin Blum and an injury crisis currently affecting their right-back depth. By securing guaranteed first-team football in the Swiss top flight, Schmidt hopes to reignite his career and force his way back into contention for the Switzerland national team, marking a fresh start that suits both his professional ambitions and Leeds' squad-building objectives.

Final obstacle could scupper Perri move

Torino are closing in on a deal for Leeds goalkeeper Lucas Perri, offering the Brazilian a much-needed lifeline after he fell out of favor under Daniel Farke. Perri’s time at Elland Road effectively hit a wall following a disastrous 4-3 defeat at St James’ Park, where he conceded twice in stoppage time. That collapse saw him immediately demoted to cup duty, never to start a league match again. His exclusion became a quiet point of contention among the Elland Road faithful, especially as Illan Meslier kept his starting position in the Leeds side for months despite a series of high-profile blunders during their 24/25 promotion campaign. With many supporters questioning why Meslier retained the number-one spot for so long, rumours of a fractured relationship between Perri and Farke have only intensified.

Now, a move to Serie A offers Perri a chance at redemption. Armed with a dual Italian / Brazilian passport, the goalkeeper is eager to revitalise his career, but the deal currently hangs in the balance over the structure of the transfer. While Torino are pushing for a season-long loan with an option to buy, Leeds are digging their heels in, demanding an obligation to make the move permanent for a fee in the region of £10 million. As negotiations continue, both parties remain at an impasse, leaving Perri’s future in limbo as he waits to see if he can finally turn the page on his frustrating stint in Yorkshire.

I'd rather keep Schmidt than Harrison or Wober. Need to get shot of those two as well!

I don't recall anyone raving about him 64 but some, including myself, thought he did okay during his limited appearances, particularly on the left. He had one poor game at RB when he got caught out of position a couple of times.

I think that might be our record signing..34M, depending on the structure of the package

Geo was 27 plus add ons and he wasn't here long enough to trigger those, probably. Aaronson was around 27M too

He struggled defensively in the championship.

It was Farke's fault he didn't make the grade at Leeds.

I don't think there are add-ons in this deal, I'm led to believe its a straight £34m deal.

He did a fine job when asked.

Nobody raved just said he did well (same as Ramazani).

But can't criticise Farke for not using him because reasons

Same as we can't criticise the Swiss manager for not using Okafor, oh wait we can apparently

Just what Elland posted made me think there were add ons
in a package deal worth €40 million (£34.1 million)

Surely it's only a signing when it's completed and he's holding up the shirt? So far we've only agreed a fee, nothing else.

That's not what I saw when watching Schmidt live at ER.

Positionally, tactically and technically he looked not quite up to the required standard. Not an absolute disaster but just short of what was required.

My recollection is one of where Schmidt finally got onto the pitch and things not going well for him with Daniel Farke having a right old rant at him from the touch line. Rather than gee the player up it seemed to have the opposite effect and he either couldn't or wouldn't do the managers bidding. At which point his days as an option for the playing squad were terminal. Simply, it he was a punt that Leeds took at a marginal fee and the player was simply not good enough.

We both agreed on the original Schmidt thread with your assessment.

I wasn't convinced about Schmidt at all, watching him live at ER, Jammy.

Neither Firpo nor Bogle were great defensively and tbf to them they didn't have to do much of it in the Championship

From what I remember Schmidt did a decent enough Job.

No world beater but not useless either and probably deserved more game time but as we know with DF some players get unlimited chances other's get 1.

That's my reading of it, he still has to discuss terms, medical etc. We've been here before and we know sunderland are interested and that any European football is better than none. We are slightly better located

Tuchel had a go at Spence on the touchline but Spence was playing really well. Sometimes it's just the player closest irrespective of quality that draws a managers ire... and for no good reason

I remember on the only occasion I sat in the West Stand in the 90s, Wilko & his henchman Mick Hennigan having a go at Jon Newsome.

Something like...."FFS you're not George Best, get back & stick to defending"
