Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Thursday 17th September) - Goal Accreditation Panel award brace to Calvert Lewin

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Thursday 17th September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Goal Accreditation Panel award brace to Calvert-Lewin

Premier League officials have awarded Leeds United’s second goal in Monday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United to Dominic Calvert-Lewin following a club appeal on 16 September. The 34th-minute header put Leeds 2-0 up at Elland Road. It was first given to Calvert-Lewin on the night, then reassigned by the Goal Accreditation Panel to Jayden Bogle on the basis that Bogle had the last touch. Leeds appealed to the Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel, which reviewed the footage and restored the goal to the striker. Calvert-Lewin now has a brace from the match, together with his stoppage-time finish before half-time.

The assist on the 34th-minute goal has been switched to James Justin, who delivered the cross. The change takes Calvert-Lewin’s Premier League tally for the season to three. The original call had caused confusion. Calvert-Lewin said he only learned at half-time that the goal had been given to Bogle, while Bogle himself said he “didn’t know anything about it” and that his team-mate was “raging.” Replays suggested any contact from Bogle was minimal and did not clearly alter the ball’s path, which is why Leeds asked for a second review. Clubs routinely appeal close accreditation decisions because official records, personal tallies and historical stats all depend on the listed scorer.

VAR audio released after Leeds denied early penalty vs Newcastle

The Premier League have released the VAR exchange from Leeds United’s early penalty appeal against Newcastle United, after referee Michael Salisbury waved away a handball claim inside the opening minutes at Elland Road. A Leeds corner was only half-cleared. T he ball bounced up and struck the arm of Newcastle’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Salisbury played on. VAR, John Brooks, checked the incident and confirmed the on-field decision.

Leeds went on to win 4-1, but the call still drew complaints because it came so early and looked, to many in the ground, like a stone wall spot-kick. The Premier League Match Centre posted the officials’ conversation:

REF: “For me, it's bouncing, it's not intentional.”
VAR: “Confirming the on-field decision to play on, the ball just bounces up and inadvertently hits the arm of the defender.”
That is the current test being applied: if the ball rebounds onto an arm and the player is not judged to have made their body unnaturally bigger, officials will usually let play continue.

The frustration for Leeds supporters is obvious. Very few handballs in the box are a deliberate grab. If they were, the defender would often be sent off as well as conceding a penalty. Most disputed calls sit in the grey area Salisbury described, a bounce, a running arm, an accidental contact. The law is not simply “was it on purpose?” Accidental contact should still be penalised if the arm is out and makes the body a bigger barrier. In this case, both the referee and VAR decided Fernandez-Pardo’s contact was inadvertent after the ball kicked up off the turf.

Authentic kits and bigger lifestyle range on the table for Leeds fans

Adidas are considering promoting Leeds United into its “local elite” kit tier, a group that already includes Celtic, Aston Villa and Newcastle United. The interest is being linked to strong shirt sales and particularly high demand for the club’s leisure and lifestyle range. That category sits below Adidas’s global elite partners, such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich, but above the standard premium clubs. The idea first gathered pace when the official Leeds store briefly listed authentic kits as well as replicas. Those authentic shirts are usually reserved for clubs higher up Adidas’s internal pyramid. The listing later disappeared, and Leeds have so far sold replica kits for 2026-27.

For fans, the practical change would be the products on sale rather than the badge on the shirt:

  • Player-spec kits. Authentic shirts, closer to what the first team wear on matchdays, would go on general sale. These usually use lighter performance fabrics such as Climacool+ rather than the heavier replica versions most supporters currently buy.
  • More choice on match shirts. Higher-tier clubs more often get long-sleeve options, extra colourways and a clearer split between replica and authentic cuts. Leeds already offered a long-sleeve away shirt this summer; an upgrade would make that kind of option more routine.
  • A bigger lifestyle range. Local elite clubs tend to receive more Adidas Originals and off-pitch clothing: tracksuits, T-shirts, trainers and retro-inspired leisurewear. That is the area Leeds sales have been strongest in, which is part of why Adidas is reviewing the club’s place in the pyramid.
  • Easier access outside Leeds. An upgrade often comes with wider distribution through Adidas and partner retailers, so supporters abroad would be less dependent on the club shop.
  • Premium pricing. Authentic kits and expanded lifestyle lines usually cost more than standard replicas. Fans would get better product, but not cheaper product.

Let's not talk about the goal that was deflected off the heel of a Newcastle defender which would make it an own goal

I started to watch the scum v Brighton match last night but after the scum went two up after ten minutes I put the Sunderland match on. When I realised what was happening and I put the scum match back on there were only two minutes to go, but I was in time to hear them booed off at the end 🤣🤣🤣

They won’t change the points in FPL I’d reckon, still giving it to Bogle.

Think you're fine. The decision has come too late to alter scores

DCL deserved that goal just for the leap!

I'm glad Justin gets the assist too, as it was a cracking cross.

So two goals for DCL and a dominant performance - do some need to review there ratings - considering how they score.

Probably not - personally I think his contribution is under appreciated by a some on this forum.

DCL was a clear motm in my opinion but some seem to prefer others for showing a couple of nice touches here and there.

Each to their own I guess but DCL has been outstanding for us since he joined.

Only 7 clubs are currently shorter than us in the betting to finish top 4 this season.

Given our form since beating Chelsea at home last season I’d say we’re definitely in with a shout for top 5 which last season was enough to qualify for CL.

For me the question is who were the players that were better than DCL? Answers on a normal sized postcard as I think you could make a case for nearly every player to have been motm on Monday and that is praising the team rather than knocking DCL as he is certainly a contender.

Should we have an elected committee to post player rankings? I obviously wouldn't qualify but I'm happy to not post scores going forward.

We don't want to be near European football just yet. In a couple of years time, then for sure, but for now it would put too much strain on the club. We are in a good place right now, a lot of hard work has been done by the manager, the owners and not forgetting the players. We are building a good squad so lets not rush things. Lets enjoy what we have right now and look forward to getting back into Europe in the future.

It is a double edged sword - European football retains players and attracts better players. No European football runs the risk of losing players. There is a tipping point for even the most loyal players who harbour such ambition.

Agreed we don't want or need Europa League but the status and income from the Champions League is different gravy. As such if you have any sniff of it then you simply have to try your utmost to make it happen. That might mean fielding a heavily weakened team in the FA Cup to focus more on the league, or a strategic signing or two in January to boost the squad.

Also if you think about it this is the season to break the SCR rules so adding that forward, or top midfielder for £50M in January would be the best time to do it rather than waiting for the summer reset on the numbers.

I fully agree about IF we are close to a position that gets us into Europe we should go for it. It would be a mistake to NOT try, but sometimes less is more and as it stands right now, i think Europe would be a real strain, not on the club ( as i think its in the best shape its been for ages ) but a strain on the players. We need to build this squad of players up to be better than it is now, but that will improve as it has done over the last season or two, its getting better each season.
