Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Monday 21st September) Stalemate as Eagles hold Leeds to goalless draw

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Monday 21st September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Stalemate as Eagles hold Leeds to goalless draw

Leeds stretched their unbeaten Premier League start to five games but were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Crystal Palace in a tense, often attritional contest at Elland Road on Sunday lunchtime. Daniel Farke’s side sit fifth heading into the international break, while Pierre Sage’s visitors claimed a first clean sheet of the season and a valuable point after a difficult opening month. A first half of limited quality and few clear chances gave way to a livelier second period in which Palace created slightly the better opportunities. Yéremy Pino’s free-kick was pushed away by James Trafford shortly after the restart, Daichi Kamada fired narrowly wide, and Tyrick Mitchell thought he had given the Eagles the lead only for VAR to rule Anan Khalaili offside in the build-up.

Leeds’ best moment arrived when Dominic Calvert-Lewin met James Justin’s cross from close range, only for Walter Benítez to produce an excellent save. Ethan Ampadu’s long throws caused Palace problems throughout, but the visitors’ defence, previously leaky, stood firm. Kamada’s late header drifted just wide as both sides settled for a point. Farke described mixed emotions afterwards, noting that not every game produces “champagne football.” Leeds have conceded just three goals in five matches and remain solid defensively, even if they looked blunt in attack compared with their midweek 4-1 win over Newcastle. Palace, who had shipped 11 goals in their first four league games, will take greater satisfaction from the organisation and threat they showed after a midweek European fixture.

The result keeps Leeds unbeaten (two wins, three draws) for the first time at this stage of a Premier League season since 2001-02. Palace climb to 15th. Farke now has three weeks to refine his side before they travel to the Emirates on 10 October, traditionally not a happy hunting ground for the Whites. The last time Leeds took three points against Arsenal, Arsène Wenger was in charge and they were playing at Highbury. Mark Viduka’s hat-trick that day played a major part in securing top-flight survival in 2002-03.

“Not every Sunday can be champagne football” after Leeds held by Palace

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke admitted his side had to “dig in” after a scruffy 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Elland Road left them unbeaten but frustrated after five Premier League games. The result kept Leeds fifth with nine points (two wins, three draws) heading into the international break. It followed last Monday’s 4-1 demolition of Newcastle and ended a run of more expansive performances. Palace, who had conceded 11 goals in their first four league matches, produced a much tighter display and created several late chances. Farke was clear it was not the night supporters had hoped for after the midweek fireworks.“You can’t expect to have 38 games of magical nights under the lights when you always overrun your opponents,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“We faced a difficult Crystal Palace side and it was not our best game and a bit scruffy at the end.“ But the team had to fight and dig in and it was defensively excellent so I’m happy with that.” Dominic Calvert-Lewin had Leeds’ clearest opening in the second half but was denied by Walter Benítez. Farke said he would have taken “a dirty one-nil” but was satisfied with another clean sheet.“In the last 30 minutes it was a bit of a basketball game and I’m happy with how we handled their counter attacks. A clean sheet, a draw, so we have to accept it.”He added: “We have heart, spirit and tactically we can adapt. We have strong unity in the dressing room. After an intense opening [to the season] it’s important we have a bit of time to recover.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Farke said Leeds had been “a bit too loose with the ball” and in the final third. He praised the first hour of defending but acknowledged Palace could have nicked it late on. “You’re always just 100 per cent happy once you win the game, and of course we wanted after our nearly perfect start to win this home game. Football-wise it was not our best performance, but we also played against a well-structured side.“It was one of those days when you don’t have your best performance-wise, but then you have to dig in and fight. It was also important to keep the clean sheet and extend the unbeaten run, and for that we take this point.”

In his press conference he struck a similar note of realism. “It’s not 38 game days of magic nights under the floodlights, champagne football, where you overrun the opponent and you score goals for fun. Sometimes it’s also a scruffy Sunday afternoon when you have to dig in.” He described mixed emotions: the players were disappointed they had not gone third, but the manager pointed to nine points from five matches as a solid foundation before a demanding run of fixtures after the break, including a trip to the Emirates before the Manchester Utd game on the 18th October

That was an awful lacklustre display against a side that should have been lambs to the slaughter - play like that against Arsenal next match and a repeat of last seasons 5-0 (or worse) will be on the cards.

I've seen worse matches and I've seen better. Felt Palace were a slight improvement on the games we played against them last year and thought they defended well yesterday, as did we on the whole. Muharemovic outstanding once again and another man of the match performance. Pretty happy with Elvedi so far even if it is coming at the expense of one of my favourite players in Bijol. Strand-Larsen didn't really get a sniff and I'm happy we didn't fork out £50m on him as he's no upgrade on DCL anyway.

I'd settled for a point the moment James and Aaronson came on and would much rather had seen Bahoya and Longstaff instead but anyway, 5 unbeaten is a great start to the season and I'm looking forward to the next few games, not fearful of them.

Got lucky, defence apart from Muha looked all at sea at times. We're missing Rodon and Bijol, I counted at least 4 last ditch goal saving tackles and one top class save from Trafford. DCL with our only real chance. 3-1 Palace would not have been a surprise

Hopefully Elvedi out and Bijol back in for Arsenal but apart from that the squad doesn't look deep enough to offer other starting options. Starting 11 is set in stone at the moment for me.

We'll be much better v Arsenal

Morning all.
Was a very good point all in all, as I said pre game, I'd take a scruffy 1-0 dodgy goal, palace were the better side for most of the game DCL ought to have scored that, too many he hits straight at the keeper but he's the only out and out CF we have, James and Aaronson show the board exactly where we are squad wise, we are very very limited, and to put those 2 on to try rescue the game speaks volumes.
Their number 23 ran the show and was excellent all game, only wish we had a player like that.
Overall I'm very pleased with 5th and a decent start to the season, the break could come at the right time for once, lets hope DF and the backroom team get some hard training together with the players cause we will certainly need to be on the ball straight after the break.
I was right in front of the slap Tarik got, maybe not intentional but didn't deserve the pasting he got from motd pundit taking a cheap dig, especially when you have players diving and cheating every game, TM dosen't go down for no reason.

Too often, Palace strikers seemed to be goalside/inside shoulder of our defenders.

I thought Elvedi did an excellent job of handing the starting shirt back to Bijol. He gave me the shivers every time he touched the ball.

Yeah if you get fingers in the eye etc it doesn't really matter how big you are.

Don't understand why we start a 10M player for one we paid 16M for... especially when the 16M one is the best we have in that position. Yes Bijol is a one trick pony but he does it so well. Elvedi looks a poor man's Bijol or a slow Rodon. I don't think, atm, he's better than Bornauw

With a limited sample size I tend to agree.

Power to improve for sure, but he looks slow and clumsy in defence. One of the reasons Palace had so many gilt edged opportunities and why we needs a record number of last ditch rescues. Most days they don't come off

It happens we didn't play well but didn't lose, no team in this league are "lambs to the slaughter" , we could play our best game against arsenal and still get battered, think people have got a bit giddy we weren't going to stay 3rd forever

This was the same team 6 days earlier thrashed Newcastle but against CP we looked so weak, passing was very very poor. We just did not produce enough chances in front of goal. We could be sitting 3rd in the league.
Leeds need a great summer 2026 with outgoings and incoming players

It was the same team, same starting XI. THat's footy though, everything can click, or go for you, one match and then not the next game. Isn't a lack of trying etc just happens. If Farke had have changed the side (from that which beat Newcastle) and we'd produced that performance he'd have gotten pelters.

Champions don't usually win leagues by being brilliant every week. Usually several average performances but usually their keeper performs well and their striker is clinical. We hopefully now have a keeper that keeps us in games, gives us that chance to nick a win (like against Forest) so that we get wins or draws instead of draws and defeats.

Elvedi is a defender for a team who rarely defends.

Ball playing stuff.

Bijol is a defender for teams who will defend more often than not (or atleast fairly often).

We aren't good enough to control games at the top level most of the time.

Bijol should be starting every week imo

He's definitely not in Pascals class

Did you see we signed Roman Egan-Riley from Burnley this week, he was highly rated at one point so there's a player there

Leeds are playing tonight, should have been on LUTV but they seem to have forgotten it's on. Appareently on sky sports plus

Away to Barnsley Men (not U21) in the EFL cup... currently winning 4-0, hat trick for Callum Mills, Egan Riley started and Ditmir Hodja made his debut on 76 minutes

2-4 now, two goals in 5 minutes for Barnsley. Wonder if taking off Egan Riley precipitated that
