And religion

I could ask the same question, the thing is the Irish were not governed by oppressive leaders

Anyway lets not go down that road

If you look at the history of England and Ireland then you will see that Ireland was treated with utter contempt by its English overlords. Look it up I'm prety sure you'd be shocked by the historical violence shown to Ireland!

surely oppression is in the eye of the beholder - one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter  btw I am orish too and lived through the Troubles, best to leave the blame game to others, personally I embrace the new political dispension even if it has meant hoods (both green and orange) in goverment! Its not about us anymore its about our kids and grandkids.

This idea of a proto-democracy originating under the Summerians while constantly cited has invoked little serious discussion and less outright acceptance. The criticism focuses on the use of the word "democracy", since the same evidence also can be interpreted convincingly to demonstrate a power struggle between primitive monarchs and the nobility, a struggle in which the common people act more as pawns than the sovereign authority :)

Without the student uprisings of 1973 which brought down the right-wing military Junta in Greece there would probably be no democracy in that country.

Demonstrations against authoritarian despotic rule are always necessary; the Greek colonels would not have given up power voluntarily, nor would Mubarak.

Of course it's uncomfortable for those countries (such as the UK and USA) who were happy to support authoritarian dictatorships for decades, but the freedom of the citizens of those countries outweighs any embarrassment to us.

Hasta la victoria siempre!

The people of the Middle East and North Africa have staged largely peaceful demonstrations against years of oppressive dictatorship under genuine threat of lethal retribution or imprisonment.

Compare that with the violence from sections of protesters in the UK who are protesting against decisions made by an (almost) democratically elected government.

Really dont think it has anything to do with religion really, just scum hiding behind religion(its catholics and protestants which have very little differnce in there religious views?), whatevr went on in the past was wrong and mistakes made on both sides, but as Raven said its all about the future and I hope that the few who still have issues can sort them out without anything stupid happening.

why is it astonishing that i dont see much difference between the too religions? the more i think about your post the more annoyed I get. If you think I was taught nothing in school because I said they are similar religions, I would find that stupid as why would I be taught in depth about other religions? Why i think they are similar is because my girlfriend was raised a protestent in Scotland for the first ten years of her life and from ten onwards has raised a catholic which I gather wasnt too much of a culture shock. Tony Blair also has become Catholic with little problem or change in lifestyle, compared to becoming a muslim these are one of a few reasons why I would think they have similarites. If you think I have little knowladge of the conflicts you would be correct to a certain extent as I would know the basics but still have as much knowladge as most people on the subject.
So please dont be astounded by my lack of schooling in Cork as I have done well enough in my life so far.

The catholic church is just a continuation of the roman empire and still controls as much, if not more than good old Ceaser ever did.

I'll grant you that they both have the same imaginary friend, but that's where the similarities end.

If you think they're the same, go and have a chat with that nice Dr Paisley.
