Was looking in the admin smiley bit, that allows you to install such images, but there is nowhere to add the source for the image itself. It must be at a level higher than admin?

As Henry Winter pointed out yesterday, it's all about the wages.

Smith is currently on a 50-60k per week contract that has a year to run.

At a guess our absolute ceiling would be 20k per week, more likely lower. I'm also guessing that there's other clubs, with the help of parachute payments (West Ham) or cashed-up owners (Leicester), who could easily gazump us on wages.

So does Smith love us enough to take a million pound paycut? Money talks and b@llshit walks, as they say...

I think it would be great if he came and willingly fit into our wage structure as it would send a strong message to the fans that he is here to play for the right reasons, not just for a paycheck. I'm sure merchandise would sell thru the roof also if he returned, a similar impact to bellamy's arrival at baadiff. I expect to be dissappointed tho

The fact remains that Newcastle want Smiffy off their payroll. As he has a year left on his contract with them, if he (for instance) signed for Leeds, wouldn't Newcastle be liable for the difference between his salary and what he would have got had he stayed at Newcastle. That's what happened when we had to offload Fowler and Viduka, probably others too. Their salary excesses were soaking us for years after they left us. Info anyone?????

i don't think i've heard this! perhaps 10k a week is too optomistic then

on the OS he just said, in his interview, on the prospect of recruiting smith his wages would be an issue and

"if he did join us he would have to knock a nought off and maybe half it"

smith is currently on 60k/wk approx, which is 3,120,000/yr i think (i presume they get paid every wk of the year???dunno)

but anyway to knock a nought off and half it would work out at £3000/wk i think (i could be wrong there)

Bates wouldn't comment on it if there wasn't a chance. In fact, I'm surprised he's made any comment at all as normally Leeds remain tight-lipped about all transfers - even ones they are actually working on.

I for one, would be over the moon, and Smithy coming back would make my summer. And the first time he goes through someone on the opening day of the season, all the naysayers will instantly come round.

Smithy and Howson in front of the back four. Max and snoddy on either wing and Nunez behind Becchio makes for an exciting proposition I reckon.

I've managed to convince myself that bates speaking out about it means that there is no chance of it happening. Had we taken our usual 'no comment' approach then i may have been more excited Hope i'm wrong!

Recently we've had a pretty effective policy of not announcing anything until it's done. Don't know about anyone else but last season there were several transfers that arrived completely out of left field for me, total surprises.

So I'm inclined to think this one aint going to happen. My more cynical point of view is that KB is throwing a few breadcrumbs to keep the club in the news.
