If you want to help artists buy direct from them wherever possible, I completey agree with that point. But if you think by sticking it to EMI or U2 you are helping all the young new talent out there you are quite deluded.
And it's actually getting worse once smaller bands are signed to a label. Part of the agreement used to be that the record company got all record sales, but t-shirt sales at shows etc were all to the band. Not anymore. Labels have whats called 360° deals where they now get a portion of all merchandise sales at gigs etc. All to combat falling music revenues. Stealing the music isn't "helping" anybody. Well except yourself of course.

Wasting your time mate, those who think it's fine to steal music will just carry on. Hope they feel just as sanguine if they are ever mugged or burgled.

There are business models that do work - forgive me mentioning the name Marillion again, but their business model is now known as 'The Marillion model' and adopted cross industry.
They were the first band to have a substantive internet site, they used the data base to target fans, they became independent, they pre-sold albums before they were recorded - to finance the recording (more than 8000 took the leap of faith with the last album), they book venues that DON'T take a cut of the merchandising etc etc. Innovative things that, if adopted by more and more bands could release music form the iniquitous practices of the major labels.
Music so wishes to be heard that it sometimes calls on unlikely characters to give it voice...

Better still, some folk apparently pay for music before it's even music.Dr.Leeds wrote:

Indeed. I've taken part in all the Marillion preorders and have supported several acts through Pledge Music.white.riot wrote:

It's a bit like buying a season ticket before you know who we have signed in the summer.
