Enormous respect to Robbie for coming out. I sincerely hope his retirement is not due to attitudes to his sexuality within the game.

I think we all wondered why RR was never given a chance at Elland Road. I'm not suggesting that his sexuality had anything to do with it - if it did then shame on us.

All of us have been to football matches and supported our teams. All of us have heard the chants and the vitriolic abuse hurled at players, and how many of us can say we have openly challenged it? I've stood up and spoken to people about racist shouts before without a second thought to it. Why do I not do the same about homophobic chants and slurs?

Let's face facts here, I don't think there are many people around who could go to work week after week and hear 'You gay b*stard', 'F***ing F*ggot'. 'Sh*t stabbbing c*nt' and many, MANY others hurled around with, dare I say it, gay abandon and not be affected and hurt by it. Think back to the song reserved for Le Saux, the horrific way in which Justin Fashanu was treated by his brother when he came out, the abuse throw at Sol Campbell on the back of a mere rumour and you realise that this behaviour is not simply rife in sports stadia but something you hear every single time. Even if nobody knows you are gay the shouts and chants get under your skin because YOU know, and it tells you how other people feel about you and your life.

It's about time people stood up and made it clear that it's no better than racism, and it needs kicking out of football just as harshly.

This really shouldn't be an issue any more, yet it is. Rugby player Gareth Thomas did a documentary a few weeks ago about coming out, it was hidden away on Channel 5, deserved more exposure IMO.

Agree.

"Gay Pride festivals, outrageous clothing, look at MEEEE - I'm gay".
"OK then, you are gay? Just get on with it and stop making yourselves look stupid and giving homosexuals a bad name".
"There are no hetero pride" festivals - why do these gay pride people make us all out to be drag queens?"

The above are comments from a friend of mine who is (guess?), GAY! I'd never have known if he hadn't introduced me to his partner. I'll admit I was a little shocked at first, but accepted the situation as they are great people and are obviously so happy together.

They both agree that the gays/lesbians they know just want to get on with their lives and don't need gay pride or "coming out" statements from anyone, to enjoy their love.

I respect that.

Not all gay people are camp, it's the camp ones that give gay people a bad name. Do lesbians also cop so much flak? serious question and is there an equivalent of a camp lesbian?

The most touching gay pride thing I have ever seen was the first ever gay pride march held in Uganda.

In Uganda the penatly for simply BEING a homosexual man is death. They marched anyway.
