So, Cameron decides that parliament should be recalled today for MPs to "pay their respects" and guess what - they are round the trough like pigs again!

Can you imagine any ground in the country where that would be respected?
None,Would be a complete embarrassment.Best left alone.

I've been trying my best to stay out of this discussion!
Graham Kelly is correct in that the country should mark her passing with a minutes silence, but Maggie T polarised such vastly differing opinions, that any marking of this death at football grounds could easily end up in bloodshed on the terraces (if you know what I mean). Imagine if you will someone who remembers her with fondness stood with bowed head in front of the family of a miner....... make up your own ending. The same would happen if there was a minutes applause. I am of the opinion that she was the best PM in living memory, and that she saved this country from falling into the hands of the unions, the Falklands from Argentina, and millions from their own apathy, but I do try to understand those who hold to opposing view.

It's not a minutes silence I would respect.....

Sadly.
Precisely what I was saying.
Holding pro or anti Thatcher views isn't the issue, she is/was an extremely divisive character and no minute's silence would ever be observed.
There is also the question of precedent - we haven't had a minute's silence when previous PMs have died, why should she be different?
If any former PM did deserve a minute's silence you could make a case for Harold Wilson who, despite many failings, was the only PM to refuse to join America in a war when he said he would not get Britain involved in Vietnam. Are you listening Blair?
Bates, GFH, Cellino: Same s**t, different arseholes.

Exactly. I don't know if it's just me, but in my head, when I was growing up, minutes silences seemed to be few and far between, these days they seem to be every other week.

Nor a state funeral since Churchill?

it seems celebrity/hero/whatever status granted too easily nowadays. I mean - I watched Olympians get a medal from the Queen yesterday just for being good at jumping or running or whatnot and yet the UK shits on many soldiers that lose life or limb in pointless foreign wars. WTF is that all about?

Don't forget the doubly respectful and doubly redundant 2 minutes silence...
