A) Burnley recently spent £500k on the striker from Brighton as Leeds couldn't afford him. As a recent premiership side they still have some players that got them promoted and played in the prem. They also had the money from being in the prem and the parachute payments. Derby have spent upwards of £1.5m this season. Why compare just those 2 though as there are plenty of teams below us that have spent more than us.1964white wrote:So if money spent is key to our success how come are Burnley & Derby in the top four playing decent footballboth clubs haven't splashed millions but they are managed well on similar resources
Why do lower level teams play their football on the floor as oppose to our lot who continually hoof the ball ?
Why does BM persevere with certain players who perform badly week in week out ?
Why sign players who are no better than we already have in the squad ?
Why sign two wingers & then play Ross upfront on his own ?
Why are our players incapable of playing a simple pass ?
Why do we barely create a chance or have a shot on target in many games ?
B) Not all lower league teams play great passing football. If they did play this great football every week they wouldn't still be in the lower leagues. Yes some lower league teams play some nice football, they can do it as there is less pressure to succeed, less clamour for instant results and a bit more realism amongst their fans. Rochdale played well against us in the cup, it was the high point of all their player's footballing careers and they were up for it. We weren't. Simple really and the case why there are so many cup shocks. Was our league 1 side better than the champions of England? A large reason why we play hoof ball is that a lot of the players at the club were brought in by the previous short term manager who wanted players who could play that way. Kenny, Pearce, Peltier, Warnock and Austin were all brought in by NW. B Mc has attempted to address the problem but the 2 defenders he has brought in have not been a succcess yet. Zaliukas seemed to be a good signing but has seemingly disappeared after 2 catastrophic appearances. Wootton looks like he likes to play football a bit more but has to judge when to pass and when to hoof, and also needs players moving to take passes from him.
C) He has tried the alternatives. Pugh came in for Warnock for a while. Murphy, Mowatt and Austin have all been replaced at times by the likes of Brown and Tonge. The alternatives in the squad aren't great. Just because someone is not selected doesn't somehw turn them into a better player.
D) When you are reliant on freebies and loanees it is going to be hard to vastly improve the team. He is also in general going down the potential route rather than wasting money on the 30 somethings with reputations. He wants hungry player who can get better. Wootton, Smith, Stewart and Murphy all have the potential to be good players but will not turn into superstars overnight. Yes Hunt hasn't been a great success so far but is the only real failure. Zaliukas looked decent until he signed -permanently.
E) He played Hunt last match alongside McCormack. He has also brought Smith on. He is tinkering with the formation due to the players he has and trying to find one that works.
F) Confidence plays a huge part. I run a Sunday League side. Every Tuesday we train on the astro turf and look like world beaters (myself excluded). On Sundays at times we struggle to put two passes together. Today for half an hour we were awful. Then we got a goal and started to play good football. Won the game 4-0 and it could have been a lot more. It is amazing how much confidence affects players. That is why the crowd needs to be the 12th man, to support the players and give them the confidence and belief. No matter how good a side is some matches it just doesn't happen.
G) Some games are like that especially when neither team over commits. Often a game only opens up after a goal is scored so the longer the game goes without a goal the more it can stagnate. It is far easier to lose a game in the first 5 minutes than it is to win a game.
