In principle you are entirely right - he is not the right player around which to build a team.

In practice, with the complete absence of goal-scoring potential in the squad (I will exempt Smith who actually has a fair record in terms of goals per minute played), we have needed to build the team around him or we would be deep in the doo-doo.

The only players, imho, around which teams should be built are the dominating midfielders who shape a game - Billy, WGS, Bobby Collins etc. A sound defence, a dominating midfielder and then the strikers are the icing on the cake.

Goals would have come from elsewhere. As you point out Smith might have scored 25 plus to this point had he played every game, The problem is McCormack is the guy BMC is building around, he's the focus and if you watch him play he expects to be cog everything else revolves around...and now he's captain..

just as a matter of interest, how many freekicks in and around the box has Wickham taken...a proven deadball striker..should be around 50 % ...no?

Unfortunately he is dominant as soon as we are awarded a free-kick, i've seen him push & wave his teammates away when they have made a move to take a set-piece, thing is his strike-rate is poor from dead-ball situations even though he has scored a couple this season
