Re: Hockaday Sacked: Official
I prefer to think the Hockaday Experiment was due mainly to Cellino's lack of familiarity of English football, and a bit of naivety to think what worked for him in Italy was automatically going to continue at Leeds. I doubt he will make that mistake again.

In that Cellino states "The club doesn’t have a physical trainer or a goalkeeping coach." What's Neil Sullivan's role at the club?!Drs.Dad wrote: I wouldn't waste my money on that comic, but have seem this piece on his statement.

He just did, it burnt down with very little to show. What lasting impact did our manager have?!1964white wrote:How do you know he is building a castle out of straw ??
Cellino has done alot well, and in his areas of expertise (finances, negotiations etc) he has done well. But this recruitment style, which is not exclusive to this owner, does not work. The best examples of it in the Prem are Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal, where new signings are brought in for a specific role. Man United, didn't have much planning with regards to new signings. Fellaini was an awful signing. Even now, as great as I think Di Maria is, he isn't what Man United require.
For us to do well, you need the manager to have a vision and know of players to get in, or have scouts who know of players, and an owner to negotiate. The best we can hope for is the Pochettino effect at Spurs; i.e. a new manager can get the best out of the somewhat random signing of players.

Were signings such as Snodgrass, Becchio, Beckford, Johnson, Kisnorbo of a similar ilk ? all relatively unknown but went on to further their career at a higher level with the exception of the injury prone Paddy. Whose to say the new coach (probably Italian) won't get the best out of the of new signings and the better players of McDermott's team (apart from Ross that is) ?theleedsmango wrote:

I think comparing us to Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and Man Utd is garbage to be honest, all four are in a very different situation (and league) to ourselves. One could equally argue that Man City didn't have too much planning regarding signings, focussing heavily on attack and yet still won the premier league with a boat load of new signings.theleedsmango wrote:

Also, Villas-Boas won 6 of his first 7 spurs games...so I wouldn't judge a manager on a handful of games, though Cellino seems to

Different league, yes, but same rules and same ball. Man City spent big money on top players, even without much organising they were going to do well.danhirons wrote:I think comparing us to Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and Man Utd is garbage to be honest, all four are in a very different situation (and league) to ourselves. Listen, you can call my opinion garbage, as many do, but I'll state that signing players, regardless of quality, without a plan is very unlikely to succeed. Man City is one exception to the rule, Everton were the example with shrewd cheap signings and well planned expensive signings can work.

I can't quote any one of Mango's posts because I agree with them all and of course those who are saying that it's going to take time to make us successful are also right. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't expect to see signs of improvement in a short time and so far we have certainly not see that.
In fact, the fact that it will take time points - in my opinion - to a blunder in Cellino's policy. Like our previous owners (though their failures are totally and utterly irrelevant when it comes to judging Cellino's shortcomings) he has rushed around like a bull in a china shop (see I can also use cliches) - albeit a rich bull that can replace the broken pieces of China - and tried to do exactly the opposite to what people have been saying can't be done. That is, he has tried to build Rome in a day.
He virtually completely changed the coaching/management team - even down to the youth team and has brought in a dozen new players with more to come. But as we are in the Championship and as we will not spend big money, they are for the most part, all from the lower leagues in Europe and England. And don't make the pointless counterargument of finding the name of the one in ten lower league player we have signed who has turned out to be a success, that is pure luck and not good strategy.
He should instead have brought in fewer players who were of proven quality even if it meant spending a bit more money per individual. And no, I will not name them as it is not my job to know which players are available and I am not a scout who knows who the talented players are. That is Cellino's job, not mine.
Despite the comments abounding that this is the first time we have seen an influx of new players during the summer, that is in fact false as it has happened under Bates and it happened under GFH. Like Cellino they brought in too many players of doubtful quality just to look like they were doing something. Not that their actions, means that we can't hold Cellino responsible for his actions.
Now of course things may turn around and we may get better and this squad of players may bring us success, but so far there are no signs of it and I'd still argue that it is better to build slowly and with proven quality a bit at a time than to make wholesale changes every transfer window.
I will close my post by saying that I couldn't care less that Manchester United are struggling, I don't care about the bad things Bates, GFH or anyone else did. I don't give a damn that we lost to Nottingham Forest when Warnock was manager or that we once got smashed under McDermott. I have no interest in knowing that Don Revie struggled at first. This is about the here and now and it is about Leeds.
My comments are directed at what we have seen so far, not what I hope to see in the future. My comments are based on what Cellino has done and not on the fact that he is Cellino. My opinion would not change if we were owned by the reincarnation of Don Revie or if we owned by my mother.
