Agreed, it was as though we needed neutral information, a panel that could have given a for and against without prejudice. There was a lot of and still is, mistrust, I remember a conversation with a couple of friends and it got round to Alan Sugar, one saying when someone like that is for Remain you have to listen, the other immediately replied, him and His sort are in it to get out what they can for themselves, people are suspicious of the so called tycoons. Then you get Branson spouting about things,I'm trying to remember the amount of tax he's paid into the system and how many days he has spent here over the last 10 years, shouldn't take long, Emma Thompson the same, when people like that start preaching it gets peoples backs up and makes them rightly or wrongly go against what they say. Cameron not only ballsed up with the referendum he also ballsed it with who he got on side, Obama'a speech was disgraceful, he would have been better getting a few self made men and women who are not filthy rich but have done well in business and got them to speak and tell what it meant to them and their businesses if we left, spoken from the heart not from a prepared patronising piece of paper, people the public could relate too, not some magnate that has nothing in common with the masses.

MOTliam wrote:Agreed. Such a complex issue that should never have been left up to the British public. This democracy is to elect the people we think best to make these complicated decisions. I'm not with the people at the top (especially not if it turns out Gove becomes PM ffs) but at least it wouldn't have been used as a political stepladder for those wanting to further their careers.
But elected officials must also strive reflect the will of the people, no matter how complicated the issue. The referendum is the will of the people, for better or for worse.

So,you would just do away with all politicians completely then and have referenda for everything ?

This referendum was from a weak willed PM who needed a sweetener (bribe) for his fellow MPs to try to stay in power....and what has he done.....fucked up the whole country !! Pathetic

I would find this funny if it wasn't so serious.

Now Cameron has jumped ship and bungling Boris has too.....both of them know they won't / can't sell this Brexit calamity to anyone.

What a shambles.

It was up to the MP's to ensure "average Joe" understood what they were voting for.

Perhaps if they had all stepped away from the negativity they may have done?

I absolutely agree. If the Remain campaign had focused more on highlighting the lack of planning and the gaping holes in the Leave campaign's arguments instead of silly point scoring we might have had a different outcome. Both sides have shamed themselves with their childish actions over the last few months.

Do away with all politicians? That does have a certain appeal in these times, but I would not do away with them and nor have referendums for all decisions. BUT, as I stated, there is a balance that politicians must take seriously, or they end up in complete fu'ed-up situation like Brexit has created.

Here's a thought...do away with referenda and change the antiquated first past the post voting system with a proportional representation system one....simples :-D

Best of luck with that one - pray how do we ensure that?

I'm not arguing against your premise but politicians by their nature are what you said, just about universally.

Hopefully Andrea Leadsom wins the race to be the leader of the Conservative party, an articulate lady who showed no nasty aggression in the EU campaign whatsoever.

I reckon a better way would be to have cabinet ministers selected by drawing lots from the available pool of MPs of all parties, but with one big change. Each portfolio is not under the control of one minister, but a council of five of them. Three is too few and too easy to have two 'gang up' on the third and an even number leads to split decisions. Each of the five ministers serves for three years in that role before being replaced, but the replacements are staggered so that only one minister is replaced at a time. This maintains some consistency and experience within the group as time passes, while allowing for new ideas to come in on a regular basis.
MPs at the end of their term as minister return to the pool.
Each MP is elected by proportional representation, thus the 'winning' party has more MPs and a greater chance of influencing outcomes. We end up with a pool of politicians who want to be MPs and ministers, but are unable to influence things by campaigning, bullying or 'we went to the same school'ing their way into a particular job.

World solved by DDOS again! You're very welcome.
