Well.. 200/5 and the Ashes could be retained by Aus in the first hour with the new ball due in 6 overs. Has it come down to Stokes once again or can Bairstow or Buttler find a notable score to get to that follow on target. It needs to be reached to have any chance of taking the series to the final game. I'm not sure what we learnt from switching Denly & Roy around. Pointless. For a moment I thought Roy was playing OK but even then I thought he attempted some reckless shots inbetween. Will the penny finally drop with the selectors? What if Root and Burns had held out until the 70/80 overs mark? Roy would have had to come in to face the new ball anyway. Did they not think about that or was it just presumed the top 3 would be long gone by that point? Well they were, in Roy came and he was back in the pavilion 40 minutes later. Burns at least has showed he has the makings of an opener now. What a shame he isn't 10 years younger!

Roy is not a test batsman right now, I don't think I've seen a poorer technique to a moving ball..For him to become one he needs to quit the white ball stuff for a while and get a good batting coach. Denley isn't an opener either and while we continue to shoe horn in mates we'll struggle against good teams. I don't see the need for 2 WK batsmen either. I'd keep Bairstow and drop Ballance.

It's frankly an outrage one of Roy/Ballance has Sam Curran's place imo, good left arm bowler, better test batsman then both the above.

While we continue to play mates at test level rather than players that earned a test spot we're taking the piss. Roy needs a century to save his spot for test 5 in the second innings and I don't want to see a 75 ball ton. I want to see a 200 ball century .

Hi faaip.

I think you mean Butler?

Was listening to Freddy yesterday and he made a good point about Roy. He asked why he was being asked to play in a totally different way than what he was used to. He argued that a belligerent 40 off 40 balls was sometimes preferable than batting at the usual test pace.

He was referencing the 2005 series where England won by batting aggressively, backed up by good bowling.

While Steve Smith has stood heads and shoulders above everyone else in this series the one other big factor in their favour has been that the ball hasn't swung. Which as you know has been the downfall of the Aussies in England in their last three visits.

Add that go the fact that the Aussies have the best attack of the two sides.

All this turns the camera on the likes of Roy who is finding it tough finding his feet against the best attack in the world.

Let's face it since the days of Strauss and Cook England haven't had an opening pair.

I'd debate the best attack in the world label..Broad, a fit Anderson and Archer would all threaten to get in an Aussie first 11. Curran is a very good left arm seamer, Stokes probably the best all rounder in the world right now and he's not scraping by with his bowling. Woakes. Overton and a couple of others make us deep at the position.

No spinner?

I think the Aussies are stronger overall.
ICC Rankings.
Cummings is 1
Hazelwood is 12
Starc 17

Jimmy joint 4
Broad 15.

Archer it us too early to rate imo. Let's give him a few series. Woakes is ok in English conditions. Sam Curran, yes I agree he needs more tests.

Bairstow out to a swinging Starc thunderbolt. Stumps demolished.

228/6

Wowee

Aussies 44/4

Effectively 240/4 but how many can England chase?

Almost 5 sessions left :duno:

England missing a trick not bowling Broad or Archer after tea.

Smithy moves on to his inevitable 50.

105/4 and the lead is 301.

Over 130 overs left in the game so when will the Aussies declare?

England in trouble yet with Root more or less playing an unaccomplished role as a opening batsman out for a duck.

When will our selectors ever learn ?

18 for 2 with another 365 required for a victory or draw to save the Ashes

So the hope was that we would see Headingly #2 but it wasnt to be and tbh Aussies deservedly retain what will be known as Steve Smiths Ashes.

Seeing he has already spent a whole day (24hrs) noone would begrudge him that title.

On to the Oval now, England will want to tie the series but will there be changes made to the lineup? Does Roy have the tech to prove he is a test player? Should Jack Leach open the batting

Tbe fun starts on Thursday.

We are not a Test Cricket team anymore

One man single-handedly won us our last match, we can't rely on one man at international level

Until we learn some lessons on team selection & how to approach five day test cricket we'll continue to lose matches

Looks like the end of Roy then.

Stokes playing as a pure bat as well, so the lineup looks like.

Burns
Denly
Root
Stokes
Bairstow.
Butler
Woakes
Curran
Archer
Broad
Leach.

So England using only three specialist batsmen, two keepers and two all rounders.

Stokes batting at 4 will be massive.

Aussies have brought in Mitchell Marsh for Travis Head, so an all rounder over a batsman.
Good news for England us that Cummjngs might be rested.
Bad news is that Smith returns to the Oval where he made 138* in 2013 and 143 in 2015. And even bagged the wicket of Allister Cook with his leg breaks... ouch!

Why can't our opening batsman build big partnerships nowadays ?

Were just not good enough 64, especially against the brilliance of the aussie bowlers. Superb bowling.
