Leeds Utd v Cardiff City Match Thread

Post by Ellandback1 »

Leeds Utd v Cardiff City

Saturday 14th December 2019 15.00 | Elland Road

Cardiff City are the visitors to Elland Road on Saturday as the Whites aim to recreate history last produced 87 years ago during the 1931/32 season when they last won eight games on the bounce in the league. This feat was matched in 1999 during David O'Leary's reign, albeit accumulated in league and Cup competitions.

Liam Cooper will undergo a fitness test on Friday having missed out against Hull and Huddersfield with a calf strain he sustained a week ago in training. Berardi once again stands by to accompany White at centre back. Bielsa will be under pressure to include Alioski in the starting line up. The Macedonian came off the bench to put the game against Hull beyond doubt on Tuesday evening. He also scored last weekend against Huddersfield.

The Bluebirds currently occupy 9th place in the Championship. Since taking over the reigns at the Cardiff City Stadium mid November, Neil Harris's team went on an unbeaten run of four games, including winning three in a row but boss Neil Harris may consider changes after a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Brentford on Wednesday. Forward Junior Hoilett is a doubt after he limped out of the game midway through the first-half. Ex White academy player Danny Ward may face his former club on Saturday. The Bradford born hit man has scored 5 goals in 400 minutes of football this season - better than a goal a game!

Leeds United have lost their last three league matches against Cardiff, all during Neil Warnock's reign as Bluebirds boss. Cardiff have lost just one of their last 11 away league visits against Leeds. Leeds are looking to record eight straight league victories for the first time since September 2009. Leeds haven't won eight consecutive league games within the same campaign since 1931-32 - a season in which they went on to be promoted to the top-flight. With 46 points from their opening 21 games, this is Leeds joint best points tally at this stage of a season in the second tier (also 46 points in 1963-64 - considering 3 pts for a win).

Leeds Starting XI:
Casilla, Ayling, Berardi, White, Dallas, Phillips, Klich, Costa, Harrison, Hernandez, Bamford

Subs: Miazek, Douglas, Alioski, Struijk, Gotts, Clarke, Nketiah

It's fitting that our centenary season should contain a once-a-century achievement. Nothing to fear from Cardiff, not with our improving goal return and watertight defence.

Keep Ali as an impact sub, he's perfect in that role and Harrison is better defensively to press and wear the opposition down in the first hour.

Cardiff have some injury worries.

Gary Madine has a bad back, so he is a doubt.

Jazz Richards is out.

Most importantly Junior Hoilett is a doubt as well.

Been looking at the way Cardiff have been setting up this season. Happy to sit back and concede possession,

So we won’t need to press as much. That being the case I think this is a perfect game to start Eddie and give him 60 mins to build his match fitness.

His game is also better suited to playing in tight conditions

Be tempted to start Ali over Harrison as i think he would cause more problems for Peltier.

If it is Harrison he isnt the quickest but he should be fast enough to have the beating of Peltier who wasnt that fast 5 years ago.

Cardiff's away form is very poor (home form very good, same points as us but we have a slightly better gd).

Away form, 8 points from 11, 1 win in 11, 5 draws and 5 defeats, only Luton, Wigan and Barnsley have conceded more (they average 2 against per game).

We should win really, no excuses.

Unchanged from Hull which makes sense. Coop if fit would be the only change but there's zero downgrade to Berardi

I would be grateful for a link when the time comes, thanks!

Bamford's due a goal again, so hoping he gets one in the first half, with Alio to come on and volley one in from the halfway line on 80 minutes.

If we do our usual thing of keeping it tight for the first 20 or so we should be fine.

Pleased Cardiff are starting Danny Ward not Gary Madine.

Madine not in the squad so thats good as he is the type of Forward White and Berardi would struggle with.

No Hoilett either.

Lord knows what we will do against Flint though.

Thanks for the link!

Never understand why anyone rates Madine, he's a shocking footballer.
