The few friends I have in that community tell me it really rankles when slavery is referred to as our nation's original sin. The genocide visited on the native population had started before the first slave ship arrived.

Yes, Mick. I teach at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Prior to that I was on the faculty at the University of Louisiana Lafayette (hence the "John in Louisiana"). My wife was a public school teacher (junior high school) for many years; we've seen first hand the conditions in American public schools and, no, wanting to succeed is oftentimes not nearly enough for these kids.Mick Jones shoulder wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 5:27 pm Your a lecturer?
My brother teaches biology in Louisiana and has taught for 40 plus years in the US in upstate New York, phily, Georgia and thinks its gone to pot basically. Kids just being taught facts to pass exams opposed to gaining actual knowledge. School kids here are 30 /30 plus in a class. And I reiterate if you want to succeed you can.

That's a damning indictment of the US education system John.John in Louisiana wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:07 pm Yes, Mick. I teach at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. Only backing up what my brother basically said. There will always be the ones who want it enough though black or white, despite the hurdles they need to negotiate.

Alma Mater of Raymond Calais just drafted to TBB, one of my favourite players and sleepers for fantasy in the 20 draft ...I'm not getting into the politics on this thread so this is my only contributionJohn in Louisiana wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:07 pm Yes, Mick. I'm not damning the entire system; there are many outstanding public schools in the US, but, because of the way our schools are funded, they are to be found almost exclusively in wealthy neighborhoods. Of course people from poor neighborhoods succeed in spite of the obstacles, but why should the schools themselves be the obstacle? Especially when there is plenty of money available to provide the poor neighborhoods with schools that are the equal of the wealthy neighborhoods?Mick Jones shoulder wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:20 pm That's a damning indictment of the US education system John.

It would be different if all kids faced the same obstacles, but they don't, of course. And by and large it's not the white kids facing those obstacles. This is the sort of thing I'm referring to when I say that there's no need for us to say "white lives matter" and why it's important to remind everyone that black ones do.
I'll shut up now.

We have sent a few notables on to the top sports leagues including Steve Finley and Dave Stieb to MLB, Brandon Jacobs, Jim Hart, Craig James, and about twenty others to the NFL, and Joe Meriweather, Mike Glenn, Troy Hudson, and my all-time favorite Walt Frazier (a seven-time all star and hall of famer) to the NBA.
UL Lafayette has sent a bunch of players to the NFL, including Brian Mitchell and Brandon Stokley. Calais was one of three drafted this year, along with Kevin Dotson and Robert Hunt. Notable players in the NBA include Andrew Toney, Bo Lamar, and Elfrid Payton. Former New York Yankees star pitcher Ron Guidry also attended ULL.

Brandon Jacobs was SI was he? ..He was a big unit for a running back. 2 rings for the Giants IIRC. I know nothing about the NBA. Mycole Pruitt is the only other S Illinois alum I know about..TE who probably should have done better than he has so farJohn in Louisiana wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 4:31 pm "Salukis" is correct!

And, it turns out that the bloke who organised this lovely, little plane trip has been sacked from his job. Although, it looks like the banner incident may not have rankled with his employer as much as his series of racist posts on social media which have been unearthed, including describing the workers manufacturing the new, England football shirt as "tree swinging spear chuckers".............imagine everyone's surprise, eh?Durly wrote: ↑Wed Jun 24, 2020 11:50 am Pretty much all this.![]()
I'm just staggered that the idea and sentiment behind "BLM" has to keep being explained to people over and over and over again and that it is somehow seen by some white people as a kind of slight on them, meaning that their lives are somehow less important.
"White Lives Matter"........bloody hell......talk about completely missing the point (although I would venture to suggest that the people who commissioned that banner knew EXACTLY what they were doing).

Hmmm don't see any comments on the Block Party last night in Brixton..... Wonder how many will find themselves behind bars within 72 hours like the guy who urinated NEXT to the memorial for the fallen cop. Not condoning his actions but I did note the msm reported he had urinated ON the memorial until he was put away and then changed it to what it actually was. Sorry but not liking how things are going at the moment. Our police are next to useless, hands tied behind their backs.
I'm going back to 505, I saw them at Sheffield and they were amazing.
