16 Years - The Good & Bad

Post by YorkshireSquare »

So, 16 years out of the top flight. What have been the best and worst moments for you and what are you looking forward to next season?

The outstanding memory has to be the 1-0 FA Cup win at OT. Sadly that seemed to be the defining moment for that Leeds team who had been unstoppable in the league until that point with a rock solid defence and potent attack - we never really got going properly again after that but thankfully limped over the line to promotion.

The worst moment for me was probably the play-off final loss to Watford. We were simply outclassed in that final despite I think doing the double over Watford in the league. So close to getting back up and then the year that followed with the team limply folding and getting relegated.

As with weasel, the best is definitely the win against ManU in 2010 but even then it was quite bittersweet for me. I understood the reason why it was such an incredible moment was because we weren't expected to compete. And when it was over, ManU went back to the PL and we went back to League 1 (although we would be promoted).

The worst is hard to nail down since there have been a lot of lows. The day we were relegated in 2004 was a tough pill to swallow. There was a sense coming right back up was going to be impossible considering the team was being dismantled and we had huge debts. It just felt hopeless. Then there was administration. But I think my low was the playoff loss to Millwall in 2009. It was our second season in League 1 and we had to go back to playing the likes of Walsall, Swindon, and Yeoville. I wondered, is this what we are now? it just felt like the PL was an unattainable dream. At least that’s how it felt to me.

I agree. I watched that game in a pub in Las Vegas that, even with a 5:00 a.m. start time, was packed with ManU fans. Celebrating in front of them was sweet, indeed, but I also knew we weren't going to win the Cup and it hurt to realize that our once mighty side had been reduced to taking joy in keeping our rivals from winning things we had no chance of winning. Hopefully, that's about to change.

Toughest moment was being relegated to League One. As long as we were in the second tier, I thought there was a way back to the glory days. Once we dropped to the third tier, however, I began to lose faith.

Never stopped loving the team, though.Never tempted to jump on somebody else's bandwagon.

The FA Cup win against ManU

So many bad moments. To pick one, I'd say the moment we went down and had to offload all that homegrown talent - Smith, Robinson, Milner, Woodgate, Kewell, Harte etc. I loved that we had such a talented home grown nucleus and we basically just gave it all away.

Most of the worst bits would for me revolve around the Bates era, that in hand with Warnock......the nightmare scenario. Have two worse people been at the club at the same time ? You may get one here and there.......... But TWO
Highs of course Man It's cup game , League one promotion( minus there as it took ages ).
You have few cup lows, Histon, Sutton, a few very poor out of their depth managers........not their fault of course . Many managers I find it impossible to rate fairly as they were all in some way hamstrung if they were part of the Bates era . Cellino for all his eccentricity did at least move the club in the right direction and it was his idea to get Bielsa I believe . Sixteen years , bloody hell I remember the last spell imposed leagues , 8 years that seemed an eternity, this was twice that ......but all said its history now . Onwards and upwards......hopefully .

The best is recovering from a slump in form around the start of this year to once again build a big gap on Fulham and Brentford, the team could have easily collapsed at that point and even finished outside the top 6

The worst was appointing Hockaday (no offence) as it really made you question the short to medium term future of the club

Bad: Letting Ken Bates, Dennis Wise and Steve Evans through the door.
Good: Things looked more positive under Gary Monk and Thomas Christiensen. Chris Wood deserves a mention, too.

Unforgettable good moments: Beating Bristol Rovers to get back to the Championship, beating Man Utd in the FA Cup, West Brom's loss securing promotion, Brentford's loss securing the title, Bielsa signing

Unforgettable bad moments: Relegation to to the third tier, play-off losses.
Un Marcelo Bielsa, solo hay un Marcelo Bielsa. Gracias Marcello. Marsching on together.

The 1-0 at OT has to be the best moment along with the win over Bristol Rovers which took us back into the championship.
All of the above bad things mentioned plus starting a season on -15 points.
