Agree on this.
If Klich has a rare off day or injury, I think we lose out big time.
Struijk could cover for Phillips reasonably well though, IMO.

There's a case for an extra versatile defender but that's less of a priority imo.
Maybe a question of Forshaw who's on his way back. It seems like he's still in the 1st team squad plans. And I'm sure they're not going to have him playing in the 23's. Pretty sure at full strength Forshaw and Shackleton back up the middle. Bielsa doesn't like a heavy squad, so I don't see us adding anyone there - at least not until next season

You know, I'd completely forgotten about Forshaw to my shame. Sorry Adam!

You just proved the cliche "Like a new signing"

Admittedly not the long term solution. But he'll do a job as we establish ourselves in the first year back

You need to be able to rely on every player you have with MB's small squad.

We already have Pablo and Roberts as iffy fitness wise, we cant rely on Forshaw, he is the most unreliable of the lot.

Was only meant to miss a few weeks 12 months ago.

I'm not convinced he will ever get back to Championship level never mind Premier league.

Not saying he's the answer. Just that I don't see us signing another central mid while we have him.

Just to dampen any De Paul joy further.

Imo as i said earlier i dont think we will get any joy with the Pozzo's, they arent easily swayed.

Liverpool wanted Sarr from Watford but the Owners stayed firm on their asking price and Liverpool moved on.

We either pay up for De Paul or move on.

Why we are pissing about with an 18 year old backup cb when we could just use some of that money to get De Paul i dont know.

Movement needs to happen soon imo.

Not big deal, time to move on. He had a bit of a shocker last week against some obscure Hungarian side, by all accounts. If he's not keen, don't force the issue.

As for Forshaw (sicknote), he's barely Championship level, I think he would be out his depth in the PL.

Just pay 30-35m for RDP and whatever’s left over will get you an adequate CB3 eg Foyth.

A fully fit Foreshaw would have been okay without being outstanding but he's now had a whole year without kicking a ball in anger so I doubt he will ever be Premier League standard now.
I expect he will end up out on loan at some point this season.

Apparently we've put a bid in for Hayden Roberts from Brighton (The Athletic), but have been knocked back - they state that they will not be selling a defender.

Given that they told us they wouldn't sell us Ben White because they didn't want to strengthen a potential relegation rival, why are we wasting our time?

That's almost a scary thought. If we sign Rodrigo De Paul, we'll be the 2nd highest spenders - with no major recuperations either

I think there needs to be some movement very soon otherwise we are in danger of having another panic buying JKA situation.

After the excitement of Rodders and Koch when you break it down they were just replacements for players we lost, Eddie/JKA, and Ben White.

We haven't strengthened any where else yet, and we need to..

We had concerns at cb, lb, cm, Am and striker.

Imo i think Hull was a wake up call for MB, whereas he may have been happy with 1 or 2 more i suspect he may prefer 3 or 4 now.

I dont understand the Gvardiol stuff, newly promoted clubs dont spend £20mil on 18 year olds. Established Premier league clubs who can afford the risk do.

Imo i think offering £23mil for De Paul was bordering on insulting. We offered more for a 2nd divison cb and wanted more for our own 2nd division player last summer. De Paul is an experienced and highly rated performer in one of the top leagues in Europe, you cant seriously expect to get him for less than you offered for Ben White surely?

Imo i think we have to get De Paul now as whenever we chase someone for a while and then stop we either get nothing or make an error. (Dan James and JKA).

So take £5mil from the Gvardiol pot offer them £28mil for De Paul with say £5mil performance related add ons and see what Udinese say.

Then get on the phone to Manure and see how much they want for Romero. While we are there ask for Dan James on loan with an option to buy for 8-12mil.

Then phone up Fiorentina and offer £12mil rising to £15mil for Erik Pulgar.

All that covers gk, cb, cm, Am, winger and striker.

I think thats about £44mil in fees (minus addons). Then call Celtic see if they want Douglas for £2mil. Call around see if anyone wants to take Roberts on loan for a loan fee of £2.5mil.

Job done, its easy :) ..

We’re coming from a very low base in player investment. A relatively large part of the squad from ‘17/‘18 are still here today so investment was over due. We also have (for now) a low wage bill by Premier League standards so this also gives us some room to maneuver.

The U23’s are major investments within that figure and they will bring in major money if it’s needed down the line. Or save us from having to spend big in the future.

We have to believe that the key people in running the club know the limits to which we can go in spending and it seems we’re a way off that yet. Like most fans, I want us to put that money still available on the pitch. De Paul alone would add so much to us I really want to see that one done!

So two players from Italy seem to be gaining traction since we wont pay a fair price for De Paul.

Both very impressive in their own was.

Erick Pulgar is a 26 year old Chilean internation.

More similar to KP than Pablo.

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/playe ... is-tactics
The 2nd is 27 year old Atalanta cm Ruslan Malinovskiy.

He is imo more similar to Klich than Pablo.
Both very impressive in their own way but imo the one thing both lack is an ability to carry the ball at pace.

That is something i like and since Saiz left we havent really had that from a central role.

The suggestion now is that Erick Bulgar would be signed as a DM, cover for Philips and/ or replacement for Forshaw. This signing may not impact on our interest in De Paul. At €15M/£13.5M it would be excellent value for an area we are light in cover. He seems a fairly tough nut but also skillful and a good passer.
