Any cross causes mayhem and we are finding it nigh on impossible to play out of defence when there’s a high press on us. We were lucky that Alioski took the booking for punching the ball away having conceded so tamely while going backwards at a rate of knots.

A good team would have scored freely against us tonight. Just hope the win lifts morale and confidence for the upcoming games.
Just grateful for the three points Boo.

Much work to be done in the summer, last thing we want is the second season syndrome as the likes of Norwich, Hull & the Blunts have endured in the past

So when we play a high-pressing game which gives our opponents opportunities to exploit the space behind the defence or between the midfield and the defence that is a bad tactic which Bielsa must change

Then when we sit further back giving our opponents space in front of us that is also bad.

Imo the man for man system is a problem.

The flaw in it aside from the fact we have largely lesser player than our opponents (thats fair id say) but as Schar showed it just takes a cb willing to dribble out of defence and his midfield teammates to drag their men wide and the entire centre of the pitch is open.

Schar isnt the first defender to exploit this but the man for man system is a large part of why we are so easy to take pot shots at imo, its brave but easy to counter.

I know we won but better teams would have exploited our man for man system today and in truth other teams we took points off had opportunities to do the same.

Have to concur CJ...I have never been a fan of the man to man set up, also we rely far to much on KP we are hurting his performances...still would like to see 4-4-1-1.

Problem with our man to man tonight was when they went two up front in the second half. KP then became the third CB. We had already used our sub CB /DFM too so we had no spare DFM to bring on. At the same time Ali was yanked with Klich into midfield and Dallas to LB.

That left a huge hole in the centre for them to barge through.

It is a tough problem to fix, a defensive manager may have pushed Rod up top for Bamford and brought on Shacks to help out in the middle. Or left Bamford on and swapped Shacks for Rod. Bielsa went for the win instead, hoping we could score a third and put them to bed. Straight swap Roberts for Bamford. It almost came off too.

But Maxim is a bloody good player and hard to stop.
And Newcastle were fighting for their survival.

I’m constantly amazed by how many fans keep moaning that our team is made up of players who are not ‘Premier League quality’. Harrison is one such player that is supposedly in the group we need to ‘upgrade’.
So I went to this site and did a direct comparison of Jack vs De Bruyne. Interesting, that one of these is a superstar and the other is not worthy of playing in the premier league.

No we aren't ges....
I really dont know what folk expect. We are 12th in the premier league, a great bunch of players, fantastic coach, a passionate owner, we were away at a club fighting for its managers survival. Not one single game is going to be easy in this league. I'm proud that we ground out an away victory tonight to be honest. We are a newly promoted team, give the lads a break, they are doing their best even if one or two might be out of their depth (not their fault by the way).

It's true we have been shite and lost. Tonight we were shite and we won. Overall we have performed really well for a newly promoted side. It's looking like we will avoid relegation this season and hopefully we can integrate some better quality players into the team and become a very good, consistent premier league team. We do have a bit to go before we get there.

Of course we're not Swannie........

The commentator said too, that the Newcastle squad cost more than double ours did. The amount of negativity astounds me at times and it's incessant, which is really disappointing.
Lots of this squad are now in a position that's two notches higher than they were when MB took over, some of those were bemoaned not good enough then, to get to become a top 6 side they'd have to go up another 2 notches. We're in a much better position than we could have dreamed of 2 years ago. I'm proud of what they've achieved and the amount of criticism is insulting to each and everyone of them and our coaching staff. To progress we obviously have to improve the squad but that won't happen over night.
