Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 9th March) - Wasteful Leeds rue mistakes against West Ham

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 9th March, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Wasteful Leeds rue mistakes

A sloppy challenge in the penalty area by Luke Ayling set West Ham on their way to their 14th win of the season, and extended Leeds run without a win in England's capital to 1185 days (but who's counting). Jesse Lingard's surging run, impressive as it was, was not troubling the the well fortified Leeds defence until Ayling stuck out a leg; then the former red (in true Manchester United style) went to ground. Meslier initially saved Lingard's spot kick; but could only palm the ball in front of the England International, who tucked it away with ease. Surely it would not have been too difficult for the Frenchman to tip he ball around the post, or at least to the side?

This is the 9th spot kick Leeds have conceded this season. The most of any Premiership club. Looking back over the season - how many of these were soft? Up until that point Leeds had been on top. They had two goals chalked off, the first for offside by the smallest of margins, but in true Leeds Utd style, we concede soft goals. The Eastenders doubled their tally on 28 minutes. An in swinging corner was met by defender Craig Dawson. The central defender flung himself in front of the Leeds defence giving Meslier no chance. Dawson almost got on the score sheet again minutes later from another corner. This time the post spared Leeds blushes.

The second half was far more even. Only poor finishing from Bamford and Raphinha, more reminiscent of scoring in Rugby Union saved West Hams clean sheet!

Should Klich be dropped?

Since arriving back on loan from FC Utecht in the Summer of 2018, the Polish International has been an absolute revolation. Not only that, he has missed the least amount of games out of anyone else in the squad. However, the 30yo has been off form for the last three months, and whilst competition is thin on the ground, his performances are getting worse.

Surely, if a player is not playing well, he should be dropped allowing for new blood to be given an opportunity? How bad are his performances? WhoScored, a reputable website who provide data to most betting companies place Klich in 15th place within the Leeds Utd squad on their average performance.

Sloppy and unacceptable

Leeds have conceded more penalties in the Premiership than any other team (9). The Whites have also conceded more goals than anyone else in top flight from set pieces (14). Would you expect this from a World renowned Manager? These are things that far lesser teams (and Managers) get right by organisation, discipline and training ground repetition. Yes, Bielsa has got us into a strong position, but he has been given significant monies to get us here!

Agree or not?

Klich's form has definitely dropped in the last few games - maybe he is carrying an injury. Until two or three games ago he had been one of our best and most consistent players (shooting apart).

Bielsa dropped Harrison after a couple of poor performances, and with Rodrigo available again, I think he might give Klich a break and start with Dallas and Rodrigo as his central midfielders against Chelsea. Alioski slotting back into the left back spot. Our play lifted again after he and Harrison came on at half time against the Hammers.
Un Marcelo Bielsa, solo hay un Marcelo Bielsa. Gracias Marcello. Marsching on together.

I stated a few of my opinions on here recently ;

1) That the team are a bit of a soft touch defensively this season - especially at set pieces.

2) That Klich may have reached his ceiling as a good championship player.

3) That mid table status cannot be thought of as a given, nor should it be used as some kind of a barometer of success at this moment in time with so many games left to play this season, including some very difficult games.

4) That some of the championship mainstays may not be good enough at this level - Cooper, Klich, Harrison, Alioski and Costa principally. Roberts was never a mainstay. This is not disrespecting what some of those players did for the club in its championship promotion season.

When Vinnie Jones was promptly replaced after Wilko's team won the old second division he was not bitter, nor did the fans seem to think that he was being shabbily treated, or even that his efforts the previous season were being disrespected. He simply made way for someone called Gary McAllister who helped take the team up to another level.

5) That Jack Harrison should not be signed in the summer - even for what seems like a bargain 10m. Better to use the 10m plus whatever extra is required to sign a consistent left winger. There is a reason why City were happy to send him out on loan and seemingly to sell him at a pretty cheap fee.

I stand by all those comments.

Harry, his stats talks for itself. Just read a post saying he looked like a punch drunk fighter last night who had had one fight too many

Soft touch yes, but lack of discipline, and not smart.

One thing that Ayling does well is getting free kicks. If he gets fouled he'll go down and make sure he lands on the ball - he's got a free kick every time....

And I think I'll echo/expand/oppose these here as these are some of the main issues.

1) That the team are a bit of a soft touch defensively this season - especially at set pieces.

The numbers don't lie. It does remind me of that first Championship season, where every time the opposition went forward it felt like they would score. I didn't miss it either. It's simply the ying/yang of Bielsa's system but that's what goal difference shows us - overall it's not too far skewed one way or the other. If we conceded even 10 less goals from all sources this season this in real terms would mean we would've won several more games and put us sniffing around the top 6. This we all know is an unrealistic proposition.

What I'm trying to say is the goals conceded have been balanced out by goals scored and overall don't mean we are a poor team. There are also factors like once Koch gets back in, not to mention he and Llorente having more time to develop partnerships and getting used to the system itself as well as the standards required in the Prem. Not to mention that better quality attackers and retainers of the ball will lead to less loss of possession and pressure on our defenders.

What we're seeing here is the absolute worst of things. We can only improve the defensive stats from here and when we do - through the transfer market or by other means - this will mean massive gains in the results we get. Losses will become draws, tight games will be won.

TLDR; this is to be expected, we've seen it before but things will improve and when they do, it will be special.

2) That Klich may have reached his ceiling as a good championship player.

I would say what I said before and that's that we know what Klich is capable of at his best but he doesn't show his best often enough or consistently enough to play at this level. I refuse to believe the club would let him play with an injury and he's been one of the mainstays of the squad, with endless reserves of stamina since Bielsa arrived. Whatever his problem is, it's not physical.

I think something's happened in his personal life, or done something to affect his confidence. There are too many unknowns for us to do anything but speculate, but by the same measure we don't have many other players of his quality to play in the position, inconsistent as the quality may be. Until someone comes in for him, we can only hope he has a few more games as good as he's had at other times in the season. Maybe he has reached his ceiling but it's not as a Championship player, I'd say upper-lower table Prem with sparks of lower-upper table at times.

3) That mid table status cannot be thought of as a given, nor should it be used as some kind of a barometer of success at this moment in time with so many games left to play this season, including some very difficult games.

Nothing is ever a given but perspective can be gained here by stepping into the shoes of sides below us. The fact is we're a better team with a much, much better manager than the vast majority of the teams below us in the table. Brighton and Newcastle are the ones to be worried about a relegation dogfight, not us, and following those teams and their games closely will show you why.

We only need 2 more wins (historically-speaking, 1 win) to guarantee survival. 40pts was the consensus at the start and remains so. The top 6 or 7 would have to drop an absurd number of points between now and the end of the season to make the relegation tide high enough to trouble us. Let's not start using the 'r' word until we actually look a worse team than the ones below us.

4) That some of the championship mainstays may not be good enough at this level - Cooper, Klich, Harrison, Alioski and Costa prinicipally. Roberts was never a mainstay. This is not disrespecting what some of those players did for the club in its championship promotion season.

You're right, it's not. I always enjoyed Vinnie Jones's anecdote where he mock-confronted Wilko in his hardman way while playing golf over him not being signed on. Wilko said it best - with a new league comes new competition, new priorities, all the way down to new playing surfaces and crowd mannerisms. New challenges require different toolsets. In our case Bielsa's system's made it easier in a way. All we need are better players and with that must come the admission that some players' Leeds careers have run their course.

In a weird way I feel Bielsa might be giving Roberts enough game time, experience and practice in the big time to up his value enough to move on. While Rodrigo is out, anyway. I think Roberts will be much better equipped for the Championship and will fetch a relatively decent price there. He'll likely find himself more suited to a traditional striker/AMF role in a club like Preston or Blackburn, and could excel there.

5) That Jack Harrison should not be signed in the summer - even for what seems like a bargain 10m. Better to use the 10m plus whatever extra is required to sign a consistent left winger.

This is a bit trickier than first appearances suggest, because to lose Jack would be to shunt Raph or Costa over to the left and who would take either of their places if they got injured? I feel that right now we've got a good balance of cover and aren't hurting too badly - mainly because Raph's quality is enough to compensate for the relative shortfall in Jack and Costa.

I agree in principle that £10mil spent on Jack would be £10mil better put towards a better player but there are positions in far more need of upgrading at the moment - LB, CM being priorities. The ideal solution I suppose would be to get him on loan yet another season while we shore up the rest of the squad. Maybe the reason we haven't signed him permanently yet is precisely because that's what we intend to do?

Wasteful Leeds rue mistakes
Perfect headline...Our finishing was attrotious yesterday, at least 3 possibly 4 should have been put away, not half chances, chances that should not be missed at this level...Bamford, Raphinha both guilty yesterday sadly.

Should Klich be dropped?
I hate to say yes, but yes...something is not right.

Sloppy and unacceptable
Ties in with the first headline...the fact that we "leak goals" would not even be discussed if we put away 30% of the created oppotunities, as our goal difference would be +5 to 10 at least... and the leaks will be reduced when we have our full defensive corps available.

The stats tell us the answer. I think the defenders should concentrate on attacking the ball instead of following the runners. Whatever they are instructed to do, either they are not doing it properly or its not working. We are the same at the other end of the pitch we don't create enough from set-pieces either.

2) That Klich may have reached his ceiling as a good championship player.

Disagree on this one. klich is one of our better midfielders imo, he's been asked to cover a lot of ground in our wide open space in the middle of the park, we all agree he's no DM and we struggle when KP is out for control in the middle. In saying that he needs a few games to rest and recuperate.

3) That mid table status cannot be thought of as a given, nor should it be used as some kind of a barometer of success at this moment in time with so many games left to play this season, including some very difficult games.

I said at the start of the season if we finish 17th and stay up i would be more than happy and i stand by that. In our first season back for the most part we have been fantastic. Its all about levels and we are punching well above our weight imo, especially with our injuries. Would you believe a small minority of 1-2 Liverpool fans want Klopp gone and Gerrard in.

4) That some of the championship mainstays may not be good enough at this level - Cooper, Klich, Harrison, Alioski and Costa principally. Roberts was never a mainstay. This is not disrespecting what some of those players did for the club in its championship promotion season.

If we manage to stay up in mid-table most of them players will have achieved that goal. We all agree we need better players for stability, but i reiterate for our first season back what more can we ask s far?

When Vinnie Jones was promptly replaced after Wilko's team won the old second division he was not bitter, nor did the fans seem to think that he was being shabbily treated, or even that his efforts the previous season were being disrespected. He simply made way for someone called Gary McAllister who helped take the team up to another level.

Vinnie Jones was bought in predominantly to intimidate opponents imo. Others will be better placed to make a accurate judgment on how good he was. No one is disagreeing with replacing some players but money doesn't grow on tree's around Leeds. You have to go to Manchester to find the forest.

5) That Jack Harrison should not be signed in the summer - even for what seems like a bargain 10m. Better to use the 10m plus whatever extra is required to sign a consistent left winger. There is a reason why City were happy to send him out on loan and seemingly to sell him at a pretty cheap fee.

He's been inconsistent recently but i would rather have him in the side than Costa personally. Good out and out wingers are hard to find. Personally i think we need more pace so i probably wouldn't sign him up for £10m. I am not sure what he has done to justify that price just yet, but its a lot more than Costa.

Wasteful Leeds rue mistakes

We make far too many errors all over the pitch.
We give silly fouls away in & around the box, problem is PL players go down far too easy.
Defensively poor for both goals especially the Hammers 2nd goal.
Starting midfield gave us nothing productive in the first-half after the opening ten minutes.
Our finishing was abysmal.

Should Klich be dropped?

Yes, can't believe he is continuously selected

Sloppy and unacceptable

Only to be expected from a new promoted team.

The errors will lessen as the quality of our squad improves.

I will say it again... IMO the loss against West Ham was down to the lack lustre offensive performance the chances we created plus the one we were robbed of again by VAR we should have won that game 4-2 if not 5-2...also if we were more clinical up front no one would be whining about our defense, if we put 30% of the chances we create away...then our goal difference is +5 to 10 easily... you can stop leaking goals, but we are as guilty of missing far more... And that is not just down to Bamford, Raphinha was as guilty on Monday.

The whole ethos of this team is about attacking & entertainment imo and happy with that personally, but when we don't take our chances the rest comes in to question.

How many real defensive minded players do we really have? When we had Pontus he didn't worry about players moving around in the box he went and attacked the ball and headed it on most occasions, for me that's what a good defender should do, he just may not be able to play the slide pass thru to Bamford or be great on the deck.

Thanks for your thoughts Leeds.

I would be very happy with 17th and just staying up as well. I think what I meant is that 11th is pretty good going at this stage, but it's a bit premature to get overly excited about it with so many games still to play. 17th would do just fine though if that turns out to be the finishing position.

Regarding expenditure I think it is possible to compete at the top with a some canny signings blended with a few players coming through from the U23s. I think that Leicester spent 52.8m the year that they won the PL, and had the 4th lowest wage bill. We've actually spent motre than that figure in the summer if you include Costa. To come near to what Leicester achieved with so little you need exceptional scouting and transfer deals.

Going back to O'Leary's era you had a crop of young players - Bowyer ( signed by Wilko ) Kewell, Smith, Woodgate, Kelly and Harte and then you had experienced signings - Martyn ( signed by Wilko ) Matteo, Bakke, Viduka, Batty and then Dacourt. Those were all really canny signings. OK, later on Risdale went OTT and made a series of badly judged and unaffordable signings, but for a few seasons that formula worked brilliantly. Ferdinand was an expensive signing, but the club made a big profit after he was sold. Personally I think that this is the only way to get back into the top 6 - we wouldn't be able to afford a Phillips if he was at another club right now for example. Bakke, Viduka and Dacourt were great value as the club avoided the over inflated domestic market, just as it has done now with Raph. Dacourt cost the same as Seth Johnson

There is an element of luck involved as well I believe. For example if the club had pulled off the Haaland transfer in 2018 then it would be in quite a bit stronger position to compete at the top - imagine what Haaland would have done with those chances last night. That's the kind of deal which can totally change the fortunes of a club overnight.

How many real defensive minded players do we really have? When we had Pontus he didn't worry about players moving around in the box he went and attacked the ball and headed it on most occasions, for me that's what a good defender should do, he just may not be able to play the slide pass thru to Bamford or be great on the deck.
Exactly right mate, your comments enhance mine. To be a truly attacking side which we are, we have to be far more clinical...Mondays game was for me the worst yet offensively as we had 3 clear cut chances that should have been put away, absolutely no excuse for the misses. add one more half chance and VAR being good to us for once and there you go we win 5-2. This team is so close to being 6 to 10 points better off than we are...I have questioned for awhile now where it is we lack... defensively or offensively.? Now we have a good baseline to go on 27 games.. I am even more behind MB than at the start of the season (if thats possible) Defensivley we have tightened up, we are not leaking goals like we did earlier in the season...but our finishing is regressing... We are safe this year and I am sure this will be resolved in the summer.

I would agree that the cards didn’t fall for us offensively last night Smudge and we were extremely wasteful in front of goal, but to suggest that was a game that could have been 5v2 in our favour is the stuff of extreme rose tinted spectacles.

IMO both our goals were rightly chalked off and it was a penalty for West Ham. Don’t forget they also hit the woodwork (twice I think) and had other good and half chances, so I’m sure some of their fans (as my immediate neighbour is and was this morning) will be suggesting it should have been 4 or 5 to them at least.

I dont wear rose coloured spectacles...far to much of a realist for that...and I disagree we had at least 3 cut chances that should have been in the back of the net...I stand by my opinion put 30% of the chances we create away and no one will be moaning about the defense, at least not to the extent many do now.
